Chapter 25 - Chapter 25: The Thing Beneath the City

The voice disappeared.

But the silence it left behind was somehow worse.

Rive stood frozen inside the enormous underground chamber.

The walls were covered with ancient symbols.

Some looked like writing.

Others looked like scars.

And at the center of the chamber stood the silver tree.

Its roots stretched through the stone floor like veins.

Its branches disappeared into the darkness above.

Every few seconds, the tree gave off a faint silver pulse.

Thump.

The entire chamber trembled.

Thump.

Rive's heart answered.

He slowly placed a hand against his chest.

"Why…"

His voice came out barely louder than a whisper.

"Why does this thing feel familiar?"

Vikram stared at the tree.

For once, he had no sarcastic comment.

No warning.

No explanation.

Just silence.

Lysara stepped forward.

"Because it remembers you."

Rive looked at her.

"What does that mean?"

Lysara didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she looked toward the darkness beneath the tree.

Something was moving there.

Something enormous.

Rive's eyes narrowed.

"Did you see that?"

"I did."

Vikram immediately moved in front of Rive.

"Stay behind me."

Rive frowned.

"You always say that."

"And you always ignore me."

"Fair."

Lysara sighed.

"Both of you are remarkably annoying."

"Thank you," Rive said.

"That wasn't a compliment."

"I'll take it anyway."

For a moment, the terrifying chamber became strangely quiet.

Then—

BOOM.

A shockwave erupted from beneath the silver tree.

The floor cracked.

Rive stumbled backward.

Vikram grabbed his shoulder and stabilized him.

"Something's coming."

Lysara's expression changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

"It's awake."

Rive looked at her.

"What is?"

Lysara slowly raised her eyes toward the tree.

"The thing that was buried with Seraphine."

---

Beneath the Roots

The ground split open.

Silver light poured through the cracks.

But underneath that light was something darker.

A black mist began crawling out of the earth.

It moved like smoke.

Yet it had weight.

It climbed the roots of the tree and slowly formed the outline of a human figure.

Rive's eyes widened.

"Seraphine?"

The figure stopped.

A voice echoed through the chamber.

"Rive…"

His entire body went cold.

The voice was familiar.

But not completely.

It sounded like Seraphine.

And something else.

Something older.

Something that had been waiting.

Lysara stepped forward.

"Seraphine!"

The figure's head turned.

Two pale eyes appeared inside the darkness.

"Lysara…"

Lysara froze.

For the first time, Rive saw genuine emotion cross her face.

"You're still in there."

A faint smile appeared on the figure.

"Was I ever?"

Rive felt a strange pressure inside his chest.

His Memory Thread activated.

Silver lines suddenly appeared around him.

They stretched through the chamber.

One connected to Lysara.

One connected to Seraphine.

Another disappeared deep beneath the ground.

And one—

One connected directly to Rive.

He grabbed his head.

"Ah—!"

Vikram immediately turned.

"Rive!"

"I can see them again!"

"What?"

"Threads!"

The silver lines became brighter.

Rive followed one with his eyes.

It led beneath the silver tree.

Deep underground.

Far deeper than the chamber.

There was something there.

A massive presence.

Something that didn't belong to a ghost.

Or a human.

Or even a soul.

Rive whispered:

"What is that?"

Vikram's face became pale.

"I don't know."

Lysara answered instead.

"A hunger."

Rive looked at her.

"A hunger?"

"The oldest kind."

She tightened her grip on her weapon.

"A hunger that doesn't eat bodies."

Her eyes shifted toward the darkness.

"It eats existence."

---

The First Memory

Rive's vision suddenly changed.

The chamber disappeared.

He was standing somewhere else.

A beautiful garden stretched before him.

The silver tree stood in the center.

Two girls were sitting beneath it.

Lysara.

And Seraphine.

They were younger.

They were laughing.

Rive couldn't hear what they were saying.

Then the sky turned black.

The silver tree began losing its leaves.

Seraphine stood.

Someone was approaching.

A tall figure wearing a strange mask.

The memory distorted.

Rive tried to move closer.

"Who are you?"

The figure turned.

For one second, Rive saw the mask.

Then the vision shattered.

He returned to the chamber.

He fell onto one knee.

Vikram caught him.

"What happened?"

Rive breathed heavily.

"I saw them."

"Who?"

"Lysara and Seraphine."

Lysara looked away.

Rive noticed.

"You knew."

She remained silent.

"You knew this was going to happen."

"I suspected."

"That's not the same thing."

"No."

Lysara finally looked at him.

"It isn't."

Rive stood.

"Then tell me everything."

Lysara's expression became serious.

"I can't."

"Why?"

"Because if I tell you now…"

She looked at the silver tree.

"…it may hear us."

Rive frowned.

"Who?"

The answer came from beneath them.

"I already do."

Everyone froze.

The voice didn't come from Seraphine.

It came from everywhere.

The walls.

The floor.

The roots.

Even inside Rive's head.

Vikram immediately summoned his power.

Roots erupted from the ground around them.

"Rive, get behind me!"

Rive didn't move.

He stared at the silver tree.

The black mist around it was spreading.

Seraphine's figure began to disappear.

"Seraphine!"

Lysara rushed forward.

But Seraphine raised one hand.

"Don't."

Lysara stopped.

Seraphine looked at Rive.

"Listen carefully."

Her voice was becoming weaker.

"Your death wasn't an accident."

Rive's expression went blank.

He already knew that possibility.

But hearing it from her made it real.

"What happened to me?"

Seraphine looked toward the darkness.

"You were chosen."

"By who?"

A pause.

Then—

"By the one who wants to become a god."

Rive's eyes widened.

Vikram's expression hardened.

"And what does it want with Rive?"

Seraphine looked directly at him.

"It needs his body."

Silence.

Rive's fingers curled into fists.

"Why?"

"Because you're the only vessel that can survive it."

The silver tree suddenly exploded with light.

Seraphine screamed—

And vanished.

"SERAPHINE!"

Lysara reached into the light.

Too late.

The chamber went dark.

Then a single sound echoed through the darkness.

Heartbeat.

Thump.

Rive stared into the blackness.

Thump.

Vikram slowly turned toward him.

"Rive…"

Thump.

Something appeared behind Rive.

A gigantic shadow.

Its shape was impossible to understand.

Rive could feel its attention.

It wasn't looking at Vikram.

It wasn't looking at Lysara.

It was looking only at him.

A voice whispered beside his ear.

"Tri-Vessel."

Rive slowly turned.

Nothing was there.

Then the voice continued.

"You finally came home."

Rive's blood ran cold.

"Home?"

The shadow disappeared.

The silver tree stopped glowing.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Lysara whispered:

"This isn't the beginning of your story, Rive."

Rive looked at her.

"It is the beginning of the story you were meant to remember."

Vikram stepped forward.

"Then we're leaving."

Rive nodded.

But before they could move—

A bell rang somewhere beneath the city.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

The entire Ghost City trembled.

Far above them, every ghost stopped moving.

Every Reaper turned toward the same direction.

And somewhere beyond the In-Between…

Arin opened his eyes.

A strange smile slowly appeared on his face.

"I can feel it."

His hands trembled with unfamiliar energy.

"The door…"

He looked toward the distant darkness.

"…has opened."

And beneath the Ghost City, something ancient finally began to wake.
