Chapter 9 - The Heiress in the Background

The first thing Elena noticed that morning was how unusually quiet the hallway felt.

St. Aurelius Elite Academy was never truly silent. There were always whispers, footsteps echoing across polished marble floors, or the distant hum of conversation drifting from open classroom doors. But today, something about the atmosphere felt different.

Heavier.

Students gathered in small groups near the windows and lockers, their voices lowered but excited.

Elena adjusted the strap of her bag as she walked down the corridor, trying not to stare too obviously as several students rushed past her.

"Did you hear?" someone whispered.

"She's finally here."

"My brother said her family owns three of the biggest corporations in the country."

"And she's been engaged to him since they were children."

Elena slowed slightly.

Engaged?

"To who?" another student asked.

The answer came in a hushed voice.

"Adrian Volkov."

The name hung in the air like a secret that wasn't meant to travel too far.

Elena felt a strange tightening in her chest, though she didn't fully understand why.

She had only known Adrian for a short time. Their conversations had been brief, their interactions quiet and careful. Yet somehow, the thought of him being promised to someone else stirred an unfamiliar feeling she couldn't quite explain.

Curiosity, she told herself.

Nothing more.

Before she could think further, the murmuring around her suddenly grew louder.

Heads turned toward the main staircase.

Elena followed their gaze.

A girl was descending the wide marble steps with slow, graceful confidence.

She looked like she had stepped out of a magazine.

Her long silver-blonde hair fell neatly over her shoulders, perfectly styled despite the early morning. She wore the same academy uniform as everyone else, but somehow it looked different on her-more elegant, more refined.

Her posture was flawless.

Her expression calm.

And the way students moved aside to make space for her felt strangely familiar.

Just like they did for Adrian.

"That's her," someone whispered nearby.

"Seraphina Orlov."

The name carried weight.

Seraphina walked through the hallway without appearing to notice the attention around her, though it was clear she was used to it. Her eyes moved calmly across the corridor as if she were observing everything.

Calculating.

Then, suddenly, her gaze stopped.

For a moment, Elena had the strange feeling that Seraphina was looking directly at her.

But the moment passed quickly.

Seraphina's attention shifted away as if Elena had never existed at all.

Students continued whispering excitedly as she walked past.

"She studied abroad before coming here."

"My father said her family and the Volkovs control half the financial market."

"They're basically royalty."

Elena tried to ignore the conversation as she reached her classroom door.

But her mind refused to stay quiet.

Engaged.

The word kept echoing in her thoughts.

She sat at her desk and opened her music notebook, though she found herself staring at the blank page instead of the notes she had planned to write.

For some reason, Adrian's quiet expression from the night before returned to her mind.

The way he had stood outside the music hall.

The way he had listened.

He hadn't looked like someone preparing for a grand engagement.

He had looked... lonely.

Later that afternoon, Elena walked past the academy courtyard on her way to the practice rooms.

That was when she saw them.

Adrian stood beneath one of the tall oak trees near the center of the courtyard.

His posture was relaxed but distant, as always.

And beside him stood Seraphina Orlov.

Students lingered nearby, pretending not to stare while clearly watching the two of them.

Seraphina spoke calmly, her voice too soft for Elena to hear from where she stood.

Adrian listened.

His expression revealed nothing.

The two of them looked like they belonged together.

Powerful.

Elegant.

Untouchable.

Elena felt something strange twist inside her chest again.

She quickly looked away.

This wasn't her world.

She was just a scholarship student who loved music.

People like Adrian and Seraphina lived in a completely different universe.

A universe of wealth, influence, and expectations she could never understand.

Still...

As Elena continued walking toward the music hall, one quiet thought refused to leave her mind.

If Adrian Volkov was already promised to someone else...

Why had he looked at her the way he did last night?
