Chapter 22 -  An Unfamiliar Man

The applause came a second after the final note faded.

It wasn't loud.

But it was sincere.

Elena slowly opened her eyes, her fingers still resting lightly on the piano keys as if the melody might continue if she moved too quickly. The room felt strangely quiet after the music stopped.

For a brief moment, she had forgotten she was auditioning.

Forgotten about the judges.

Forgotten about the pressure.

Now reality returned all at once.

She turned slightly toward the panel.

The three judges sat behind their table, studying her with thoughtful expressions. One of them, an older woman with silver hair tied neatly into a bun, nodded slowly.

"Thank you, Miss Rivera," she said.

Elena stood from the bench, trying to ignore how fast her heart was beating.

"You may wait outside. The results will be posted later this afternoon."

"Thank you," Elena said politely.

She gathered her sheet music, gave a small respectful bow, and walked toward the door.

The moment she stepped into the hallway, she let out a quiet breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding.

It was done.

Whether she had succeeded or not was out of her hands now.

The hallway outside the audition rooms buzzed with nervous energy. Students sat in rows of chairs, some reviewing music sheets while others stared at the floor in deep concentration.

Elena found an empty seat near the window and sat down.

Her fingers were still trembling slightly.

She replayed the performance in her mind.

Had she rushed the second movement?

Was the final note too soft?

Maybe she should have chosen a different piece—

"Elena Rivera?"

She looked up.

A man stood a few steps away from her.

He wasn't a student.

That much was obvious immediately.

He looked to be in his mid-thirties, dressed in a perfectly tailored charcoal suit that probably cost more than Elena's entire wardrobe. His posture was straight, his expression calm but observant.

Yet there was something unusual about him.

He seemed… out of place here.

Like someone used to standing in much more powerful rooms than a conservatory hallway.

"Yes?" Elena replied cautiously.

The man offered a polite smile.

"My name is Daniel Mercer."

His voice was smooth and professional.

"I hope I'm not interrupting."

Elena blinked, confused.

"No… I just finished my audition."

"I know."

That answer made her pause.

"You… know?"

Daniel nodded slightly.

"I happened to hear part of your performance."

Elena felt her cheeks warm.

"Oh."

"I've attended many musical showcases over the years," he continued. "But it's rare to hear someone play with that kind of sincerity."

The compliment surprised her.

"Thank you," she said shyly.

Daniel studied her for a moment, as if confirming something in his mind.

"Miss Rivera," he said, "do you currently have representation?"

Elena frowned slightly.

"Representation?"

"A manager. Agent. Sponsor."

She shook her head.

"No. I'm just a student… or hopefully a student here if I pass the audition."

Daniel nodded thoughtfully.

"That may change soon."

Elena wasn't sure what he meant by that.

Before she could ask, he reached into his suit jacket and pulled out a simple white card.

He handed it to her.

Elena looked down at it.

Daniel Mercer

Executive Director

Valkor Cultural Foundation

She looked back up at him, puzzled.

"What is this?"

"The foundation supports talented artists," Daniel explained calmly. "Musicians, composers, performers."

Elena stared at the card again.

"This seems a little sudden," she admitted.

Daniel chuckled softly.

"It probably does."

Then his expression grew slightly more serious.

"But sometimes talent deserves attention immediately."

Elena hesitated.

Something about the situation felt unreal.

Why would someone like this approach her after a simple audition?

"You should keep the card," Daniel said.

"In case you decide you'd like support."

Elena carefully placed it in her bag.

"Thank you," she said, though she still felt confused.

Daniel gave a small nod.

"I look forward to hearing you play again, Miss Rivera."

With that, he turned and walked down the hallway.

His steps were calm, confident, purposeful.

Elena watched him disappear around the corner.

Something about the encounter felt strange.

Unfamiliar.

Yet somehow important.

She pulled the card out again, staring at the elegant lettering.

Valkor Cultural Foundation.

The name felt oddly familiar.

But she couldn't remember where she had heard it before.

Across the city, in the towering headquarters of the Volkov Group, Adrian Volkov stood behind his office desk, staring down at a file.

Inside was a simple profile.

Elena Rivera.

Kai leaned casually against the nearby bookshelf, watching his friend with quiet amusement.

"You sent Daniel to her audition?" he asked.

Adrian didn't look up.

"Yes."

Kai folded his arms.

"You could've just approached her yourself."

Adrian finally lifted his gaze.

His dark eyes were calm.

But something deeper burned beneath the surface.

"It's too early for that," he said.

Kai smirked slightly.

"So you're watching from a distance again."

Adrian closed the file slowly.

"For now."

Because the girl who had once played piano in an empty auditorium…

Had just walked back into his world.

And this time—

Adrian Volkov had no intention of letting her disappear again.
