Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: The Gaze of the God of Shinobi

The administrative building of the Hidden Leaf was a hive of activity, but inside the Hokage's office, the air was thick with the scent of tobacco and ancient scrolls. Hiruzen Sarutobi, the Third Hokage, sat behind his desk, his eyes sharp despite the weary lines on his face. Standing beside him was a man with a bandaged eye and a cold, calculating aura: Danzo Shimura.

Minato and Aizen stepped into the room. Minato bowed deeply, his energy bright and respectful. Aizen followed suit, his posture a perfect mirror of a humble student, yet his mind was already dissecting the room.

"You summoned us, Lord Hokage?" Minato asked, his voice steady.

Hiruzen exhaled a cloud of smoke. "Minato. Sosuke. You both represent the pinnacle of your class. But the world outside these walls is changing. The tension between the Great Nations is a dry forest waiting for a spark. I need to know if the next generation is ready to handle the heat."

Danzo stepped forward, his gaze landing on Aizen. "Academic scores are one thing. Survival is another. We have received reports of a small squad of Stone Shinobi (Iwa) scouting the border of the Land of Fire. Usually, this would be a task for Chunin, but we want to see how the 'Genius' and the 'Scholar' handle a live threat."

Aizen's eyes flickered behind his glasses. A live threat. Or a live experiment? He knew Danzo's reputation. The man didn't believe in potential; he believed in results and blood.

"This is a 'Special Evaluation' mission," Hiruzen added. "You will be supervised by an elite Jonin, but you are expected to take the lead in strategy. Sosuke, your record shows an uncanny aptitude for Fuinjutsu and tactical analysis. You will be the strategist. Minato, you will be the primary combatant."

"We won't let you down, Lord Hokage," Minato said, his fist clenched in determination.

Aizen smiled—that same, soft, reassuring smile. "It is a heavy responsibility, but I will do my best to ensure Minato-kun and our supervisor return safely. Knowledge is useless if it cannot protect one's comrades."

Danzo narrowed his eyes. "A noble sentiment. See that it doesn't become a liability."

As they exited the office, Aizen noticed a figure leaning against the wall in the hallway. It was a young man with silver hair and a mask covering half his face—Sakumo Hatake, the White Fang of the Leaf. He looked at the two boys with a mixture of pity and respect.

"So, you're the ones," Sakumo said, his voice low. "I'll be your shadow on this mission. But make no mistake—unless your lives are a breath away from ending, I will not interfere. Do you understand?"

"Understood, Sakumo-san!" Minato chirped.

Aizen nodded politely. "Your reputation precedes you, Hatake-san. I look forward to learning from your movements."

As they walked toward the village gates to prepare, Aizen felt the Hogyoku pulse within his soul. It was reacting to the darkness in Danzo's heart and the flickering light in Hiruzen's.

Hiruzen seeks to preserve a peace that is already rotting, Aizen mused. Danzo seeks to build a throne upon corpses. Both are so limited by their humanity. They fear the very chaos that leads to evolution.

"Sosuke?" Minato called out, snapping him back to the moment. "You're thinking about the strategy, aren't you? You always get that quiet look when you're three steps ahead."

Aizen adjusted his glasses, the sunlight reflecting off the lenses so that his eyes were hidden for a brief second. "Just wondering about the nature of our enemies, Minato-kun. People often reveal their true selves only when they believe they have the upper hand. I find that... fascinating."

Soon, Aizen thought, I will not just be three steps ahead. I will be the one walking the path that none of you can even see.
