Chapter 6 - THE QUEEN’S DANGEROUS OFFER

THE QUEEN'S DANGEROUS OFFER — SERVE THE EMPIRE YOU SWORE TO DESTROY… OR DIE TRYING

The DeLuca mansion felt different at night.

Raven noticed it the moment the sun disappeared behind the distant skyline and darkness settled across the estate like a velvet curtain. The quiet elegance of the mansion transformed into something deeper, something more dangerous. Lights glowed softly through tall windows, casting golden reflections across the gardens below, while shadows stretched long across the marble halls.

Night belonged to predators.

And Raven had always been one of them.

She stood alone near the balcony outside her assigned room, watching the distant city burn with thousands of electric lights. The skyline looked almost peaceful from this height, as if the chaos and corruption of the streets below had been painted over by distance.

But Raven knew better.

Cities were never peaceful.

They were battlegrounds.

And this one had a queen.

Her fingers rested lightly against the balcony railing as she replayed the events of the day in her mind.

Isabella DeLuca.

The woman was impossible.

Every conversation with her twisted expectations in ways Raven hadn't anticipated. Instead of threats or cruelty, the queen offered calm discussions. Instead of punishment for the assassination attempt, Raven received access to parts of the estate.

That wasn't kindness.

It was strategy.

Raven understood psychological warfare when she saw it.

And Isabella was very, very good at it.

A quiet knock broke the silence.

Raven turned slowly.

The door opened before she could respond.

Isabella stepped inside.

The queen had changed again since their walk through the gardens earlier that afternoon. This time she wore something darker—a fitted black silk blouse tucked into sleek trousers, her long hair falling freely down her back.

But it wasn't her appearance that drew Raven's attention.

It was the energy around her.

Calm.

Focused.

Dangerous.

Isabella walked onto the balcony like she owned the night itself.

Which, Raven realized, she probably did.

"You like the view," Isabella said casually.

Raven leaned back against the railing.

"It's useful."

"Useful?"

"Helps me calculate escape routes."

Isabella smiled faintly.

"I appreciate honesty."

Raven tilted her head slightly.

"You should."

"And why is that?"

"Because I'm still going to kill you."

The statement hung in the cool night air between them.

Isabella didn't react with anger.

Instead she walked closer.

Close enough that the faint scent of her perfume reached Raven again—dark, expensive, something intoxicating that didn't belong to a criminal empire yet somehow suited her perfectly.

"You've said that several times today," Isabella murmured.

"And I mean it every time."

"Yes."

Isabella leaned beside her against the railing.

"I believe you."

The simple acceptance irritated Raven.

"You're not even slightly concerned?"

"Concern is for people who lack control."

Raven scoffed.

"You think you control everything."

"No."

Isabella's eyes flicked toward her.

"I control enough."

Silence settled between them.

The city lights flickered below like distant stars.

Finally Raven spoke again.

"You didn't come here just to admire the skyline."

Isabella smiled slightly.

"No."

Her voice lowered.

"I came to give you a choice."

Raven's expression hardened.

"I'm listening."

Isabella turned fully toward her.

For the first time since entering the balcony, the queen's expression shifted into something more serious.

"You've been trying to dismantle my organization for months."

Raven said nothing.

"You're efficient."

"Disciplined."

"And extremely dangerous."

Raven crossed her arms.

"Flattery won't change anything."

"I'm not flattering you."

Isabella stepped closer.

"I'm recruiting you."

The words landed like a gunshot in Raven's mind.

For a moment she genuinely thought she had misheard.

Then she laughed.

A sharp, disbelieving sound.

"You're insane."

Isabella didn't argue.

"I want you to work for me."

Raven stared at her.

"You must have lost your mind."

Isabella's eyes remained calm.

"You're one of the most capable operatives I've encountered."

"And you think I'll just switch sides?"

"No."

The queen's voice softened slightly.

"I think you'll make a rational decision."

Raven's laughter returned.

"Rational?"

She stepped closer to Isabella.

"Let me explain something to you."

Her voice dropped dangerously.

"You are the reason I exist."

Isabella raised an eyebrow.

"My entire life has been dedicated to destroying people like you."

Her gaze sharpened.

"You think I'm going to suddenly start working for you?"

Isabella watched her carefully.

"Yes."

Raven shook her head slowly.

"You really are delusional."

The queen sighed quietly.

"I thought you might say that."

Then Isabella turned away slightly.

And said something that made Raven's blood run cold.

"Because if you refuse…"

She glanced back over her shoulder.

"I'll have to kill you."

The sentence was delivered without anger.

Without drama.

Just calm inevitability.

Raven stared at her.

"You're threatening me now?"

"I'm explaining reality."

Raven's lips curled slightly.

"You should have done that the moment you captured me."

"I considered it."

Isabella turned fully toward her again.

"But you're too valuable."

"Valuable?"

"Yes."

Isabella began walking slowly across the balcony.

"You know the Covenant's tactics."

Raven froze.

The name hit harder than she expected.

"You understand their infiltration methods."

Isabella's gaze sharpened.

"And you clearly have the skills to eliminate powerful targets."

Raven's voice turned icy.

"You're asking me to betray everything I believe in."

"Yes."

The honesty returned.

"And if I don't?"

Isabella met her gaze.

"You die."

The words lingered in the night air.

Raven studied her carefully.

Trying to determine if the queen was bluffing.

But Isabella's expression revealed nothing.

Just calm certainty.

"You're serious," Raven murmured.

"Completely."

Raven laughed softly.

"You really don't understand me."

"Explain."

Raven stepped closer.

Their faces were only inches apart now.

"I would rather die than serve a criminal empire."

Isabella's lips curved slightly.

"That's what they trained you to say."

Raven's eyes flashed.

"That's what I believe."

Isabella tilted her head slightly.

"Are you sure?"

Raven felt irritation flare instantly.

"Yes."

"Then prove it."

Raven blinked.

"What?"

Isabella gestured lightly toward the balcony edge.

"Jump."

Raven stared at her.

"Excuse me?"

"If you truly value your ideology more than your life…"

The queen's voice softened.

"Then dying should be easy."

Raven felt anger surge through her chest.

"You're mocking me."

"No."

Isabella stepped closer again.

"I'm challenging you."

Their eyes locked.

The tension between them felt almost electric.

"You won't jump," Isabella continued quietly.

"Because deep down you want answers."

Raven's jaw tightened.

"You think you know me."

"I think I understand human nature."

Isabella reached out suddenly.

Her fingers brushed lightly against Raven's wrist.

The contact lasted less than a second.

But the warmth of it sent a strange sensation up Raven's arm.

"And right now," Isabella murmured, "your curiosity is stronger than your hatred."

Raven pulled her hand away instantly.

"Don't touch me."

Isabella smiled faintly.

"Still angry."

"You kidnapped me."

"You tried to kill me."

Raven glared.

"Fair point."

The queen stepped back slightly.

"So here's the offer again."

Her voice turned calm.

Professional.

"Work for me."

"Learn the truth about the world you've been fighting."

"And if you still believe I deserve to die afterward…"

She paused.

Then added quietly.

"I'll let you try again."

The words hit Raven harder than the threat earlier.

"You would give me another chance to assassinate you?"

"Yes."

Raven stared at her.

"That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard."

"Or the most confident."

Silence stretched between them.

Raven's mind raced.

The Covenant would call this manipulation.

A psychological tactic designed to break her loyalty.

But Isabella wasn't forcing her.

The queen was offering something far more dangerous.

Choice.

Raven looked out across the city again.

Lights flickered across the skyline like distant stars.

Everything she had ever believed about the world told her Isabella DeLuca was a monster.

But the woman standing beside her didn't act like one.

Not entirely.

Finally Raven spoke.

"If I agree…"

Isabella waited.

"What exactly would I be doing?"

The queen's smile returned slowly.

"Helping me eliminate a threat."

Raven frowned.

"What threat?"

Isabella's eyes darkened slightly.

"My own council."

The words surprised Raven.

"Your council?"

"Yes."

Isabella leaned against the railing again.

"Power attracts ambition."

Raven studied her carefully.

"You think your own people are plotting against you."

"I know they are."

"And you want me to help you deal with them."

"Yes."

Raven considered that.

It sounded suspiciously like something the Covenant might approve of.

Eliminating corrupt criminals within a criminal organization.

But that logic felt dangerous.

"You're manipulating the situation," Raven said.

"Of course."

Isabella smiled.

"That's what leaders do."

Raven sighed.

"You're impossible."

"And yet you're still considering the offer."

Raven hated that she was right.

Finally she said quietly:

"I'm not working for you."

Isabella's expression didn't change.

"But I'm also not dying tonight."

The queen nodded slowly.

"That's a start."

Raven turned toward the door leading back into the mansion.

"So what now?"

Isabella's voice followed her calmly.

"Now…"

Raven paused.

"Now you stay."

She turned back.

"And tomorrow?"

Isabella's smile returned.

"Tomorrow you begin seeing how the real world works."

Raven narrowed her eyes.

"This doesn't mean I trust you."

"I don't expect you to."

"Good."

Raven stepped inside.

"But I'm still going to kill you eventually."

Isabella laughed softly behind her.

"I look forward to it."

And for the first time since their strange alliance began…

The tension between them felt less like a battle.

And more like the beginning of something far more dangerous.
