Chapter 7 - Chapter 7. The Man Who Notices Everything

The Obsidian Lounge had grown louder as the night deepened.

The live jazz band had shifted into a smoother rhythm, the slow hum of the bass blending with quiet conversations and the soft clink of glasses. Golden lighting spilled across the dark marble floors, giving the entire room a warm glow.

Dominic Vale returned to the VIP section with the same calm stride he always carried.

He took his seat and reached for the glass of whiskey waiting on the table.

Across the room, the bar was crowded.

Yet his gaze moved there without effort.

She had returned.

Alessia stood beside her friend at the long marble counter, her posture straight but relaxed. The black dress she wore was simple, elegant, the fabric catching the soft golden lights every time she moved.

It wasn't flashy.

But it didn't need to be.

The dress fitted her perfectly, hugging her waist before falling smoothly to her knees. A thin gold bracelet rested against her wrist as she lifted her glass.

Her hair framed her face in a full, natural afro that caught the light like a dark halo. It was striking—bold, unapologetic, and completely different from the sleek styles most women in the lounge wore.

Dominic watched as she tilted her head slightly while listening to her friend.

Her laughter came a second later.

Soft.

Brief.

Then it faded again.

There was something composed about her. Something controlled.

Even when she drank, even when she smiled, she still carried herself with quiet authority.

Like someone used to being observed.

"You're staring."

Dominic lowered his glass slowly.

Julian Cross leaned comfortably back in his chair, one arm draped across the backrest, his expression filled with quiet amusement.

"I'm not staring," Dominic said calmly.

Julian raised an eyebrow.

"Of course."

He lifted his own drink.

"The fact that you've been looking in that exact direction for the last thirty seconds must be purely coincidental."

Dominic didn't answer.

Julian followed his line of sight across the lounge.

It took him less than two seconds.

"Ah," he said.

The single word carried too much understanding.

Julian leaned forward slightly.

"So that's what caught your attention tonight."

Dominic remained silent.

Julian studied the bar more carefully now.

"Well," he said thoughtfully, "I can see why."

Dominic gave him a flat look.

Julian ignored it.

"She's beautiful."

Dominic said nothing.

Julian continued observing.

"She's not trying to be either."

Across the lounge, Maya was animatedly telling a story, her hands moving dramatically.

Alessia listened, her elbow resting lightly on the counter as she held her drink.

Her posture was relaxed, but there was something distant in her eyes.

Julian noticed that too.

"She doesn't look like someone who spends a lot of time in places like this."

Dominic's voice was quiet.

"She doesn't."

Julian glanced back at him.

"Oh?"

Dominic didn't elaborate.

Julian leaned back again.

"Did she recognise you?"

"No."

That made Julian laugh softly.

"That might be the most refreshing thing I've heard all week."

Dominic lifted his glass again but didn't drink.

Across the room, Alessia brushed her fingers briefly through her afro, pushing a curl away from her face.

The movement was simple.

But Dominic found himself noticing it.

Julian saw that as well.

"You collided with her in the corridor," Julian said casually.

"Yes."

"And?"

"We spoke."

"For how long?"

"A minute."

Julian shook his head slowly.

"And somehow that was enough."

Dominic gave him a cool look.

"You're imagining things."

Julian grinned.

"I rarely imagine things when the evidence is sitting directly across from me."

Dominic didn't reply.

Julian glanced back toward the bar.

"I like her hair."

Dominic didn't react.

Julian smirked.

"It suits her."

The golden light from the lounge lamps softened the outline of Alessia's curls, creating a halo effect around her head whenever she turned slightly.

She was different from the women who usually filled elite lounges like this.

Less polished.

More real.

Julian watched her a moment longer before shaking his head.

"Well," he said lightly, "this is unexpected."

Dominic's gaze drifted back across the room again.

"What is?"

"You."

Dominic frowned slightly.

"Watching someone."

"I watch people all the time."

"Yes," Julian said. "But not like this."

Dominic remained silent.

Across the lounge, Maya suddenly leaned toward Alessia and whispered something in her ear.

Alessia's eyes widened slightly before she shook her head.

Julian noticed the reaction immediately.

"Oh this is good."

Dominic looked at him.

"What?"

Julian nodded toward the bar.

"I think your mysterious hallway stranger just realised you exist."

Dominic's gaze shifted again.

For a brief moment, Alessia looked up.

Her eyes scanned the room.

Then they stopped.

Directly on him.

The distance between them was crowded with people and tables, but the moment still held.

Just for a second.

Then she looked away again and turned back to Maya.

Julian leaned back in his chair slowly, a satisfied smile spreading across his face.

"Well," he said calmly.

"That answers that question."

Dominic didn't reply.

But his gaze lingered on the bar long after the moment had passed.
