The Root's Hunger
As the sun sets, the ground begins to vibrate. Julian trips over a thick root and realizes it's moving like a snake. He finds an old cellar where he discovers the skeletons of previous "guests" from fifty, a hundred, and a hundred and fifty years ago. Their bones aren't broken; they are intertwined with tree roots. They weren't killed—they were absorbed.
