Chapter 1 - CHAPTER 1: THE FORSAKEN SOUL’S DESCENT

The sky above the Kingdom of Aethelgard was no longer blue. It was the color of a festering wound—a bruised purple bleeding into a necrotic black. High above the ivory towers of the Holy City, the Great Rift had finally torn open, and from its jagged maw, the Void spilled forth like ink dropped into a basin of pure water.

"Hold the line! For the Light! For the Goddess!"

The screams of the Paladins were cut short by the wet, rhythmic sound of tearing flesh. Ren gripped his silver-plated spear, his knuckles white, his breath coming in ragged gasps. At nineteen, he was the youngest recruit of the 7th Vanguard, labeled as a 'blessed child' by the High Priests. They told him he was The Chosen One, a beacon of hope destined to repel the darkness.

They lied.

"Ren! Behind you!" a voice roared.

Before Ren could turn, a massive shockwave threw him against the crumbling obsidian wall. His vision blurred. Through the haze of dust and blood, he saw him—Commander Varos, his mentor, the man who had taught him how to hold a blade. Varos wasn't fighting the Void Walkers. He was standing among them, his golden armor untarnished, a cruel, cold smile playing on his lips.

"The ritual requires a catalyst, Ren," Varos said, his voice echoing with a hollow, metallic resonance. "The Light cannot exist without a sacrifice. You weren't chosen to lead us. You were chosen to feed the Abyss."

"Commander... why?" Ren coughed, coughing up a mouthful of copper-tasting blood.

"Because the gods are silent, boy. But the Abyss... the Abyss answers."

With a flick of his wrist, Varos unleashed a blast of holy energy—not to kill, but to push. Ren felt his body lift off the ground, soaring over the edge of the Lazarus Chasm, the bottomless pit that led to the very heart of the world's corruption.

As gravity took hold, Ren saw the faces of his fellow soldiers. They weren't horrified. They were watching with hollow eyes, their shadows lengthening, twisting into grotesque shapes. They had all betrayed him. The entire Kingdom had traded his life for a few more years of false peace.

[SYSTEM NOTIFICATION: FATAL DAMAGE DETECTED] [HOST LIFE FORCE: 12%... 8%... 4%...]

The wind roared in his ears, a deafening cacophony of a thousand screaming souls. The air grew colder, thick with the stench of ancient rot and stagnant magic. Ren felt his ribs shatter as he struck jagged outcroppings of rock during the fall. His right arm snapped like a dry twig.

Darkness swallowed the light of the surface.

Is this it? Ren thought, his consciousness flickering like a dying candle. To die as a pawn in a game I never agreed to play?

[WILL TO LIVE DETECTED: 99.9%] [HIDDEN CONDITION MET: THE HEART OF THE BETRAYED]

Suddenly, the falling stopped. Not because he hit the ground, but because the darkness itself became solid. It felt like cold oil, wrapping around his broken limbs, seeping into his open wounds.

"Do you hate them?"

A voice vibrated through his very marrow. It wasn't heard with ears; it was felt in the soul. It was ancient, heavy, and smelled of stardust and graves.

"I... I will... kill them all..." Ren wheezed, his heart pulsing with a rhythm of pure, unadulterated rage.

"Good. The Light gave you a destiny. I give you... a choice. Become the Abyss, or be consumed by it."

[SYSTEM EVOLUTION INITIATED] [CLASS: 'CHOSEN HERO' HAS BEEN FORCIBLY DELETED] [NEW CLASS ACQUIRED: 'ABYSSAL MONARCH' (UNIQUE - GROWTH TYPE)]

A searing heat erupted in Ren's chest. His shattered bones began to knit back together, but they didn't heal into human bone. They turned into a dark, crystalline substance. His silver spear, falling beside him, was touched by the black ichor and began to warp, its tip elongating into a jagged, ethereal scythe.

His eyes, once a bright, hopeful blue, bled into a deep, abyssal violet.

[SKILL UNLOCKED: 'SHADOW EXTRACTION'] [SKILL UNLOCKED: 'VOID BREAKER']

Ren stood up in the pitch-black silence of the pit. Around him, the glowing eyes of a hundred Void Stalkers emerged from the shadows. These were the monsters that had decimated his kingdom.

One of them, a creature of many limbs and jagged teeth, lunged at him.

Ren didn't flinch. He didn't feel fear. He only felt a cold, crushing hunger. He reached out his left hand, and shadows erupted from his palm like lances.

Crunch.

The monster didn't just die; its very essence was ripped out and absorbed into Ren's body.

[EXP GAINED] [LEVEL UP: 1 -> 2]

Ren looked up. He couldn't see the surface, but he could feel it. He could feel the heartbeat of the people who had cheered for his sacrifice. He could feel Varos's smug satisfaction.

"Wait for me," Ren whispered, his voice now layered with the echoes of the void. "I'm coming back. And I'm bringing the darkness with me."
