Chapter 3 - The First Conversation

The final bell rang across Mystic Falls High School.

Students immediately began leaving their classrooms, filling the hallways with laughter and chatter.

Lockers slammed.

Friends talked about homework.

Others planned their evening.

But for Elena Gilbert, something else was on her mind.

Her eyes slowly moved toward the front of the classroom.

Alexander Nightshade was already standing.

Calm.

Silent.

As if he didn't belong to the noisy world around him.

He picked up his bag and walked toward the door.

Caroline nudged Elena's shoulder.

"He's leaving."

Elena looked confused.

"So?"

Caroline rolled her eyes dramatically.

"So? Elena, this is your chance!"

Elena blinked.

"My chance for what?"

Caroline leaned closer and whispered excitedly.

"To talk to the mysterious hot transfer student obviously."

Elena sighed.

But before she could respond…

Caroline suddenly pushed her forward.

Elena stumbled slightly.

And ended up directly in front of Alexander.

She froze.

Alexander stopped walking.

Their eyes met again.

For a moment…

Neither of them spoke.

Elena quickly tried to compose herself.

"Sorry… Caroline pushed me."

Alexander glanced briefly at the blonde girl behind her.

Caroline Forbes immediately waved innocently.

Alexander's lips curved slightly.

Then he looked back at Elena.

"It's fine."

His voice was calm and gentle.

Elena felt strangely nervous.

Which was unusual for her.

She usually found it easy to talk to people.

But with him…

Everything felt different.

Still, she gathered her courage.

"You're the new student… Alexander, right?"

Alexander nodded slightly.

"Yes."

Elena smiled politely.

"I'm Elena."

Alexander already knew that.

But he still responded calmly.

"Nice to meet you, Elena."

Something about the way he said her name made her heart beat faster.

Behind them, Caroline whispered excitedly to herself.

"Okay this is happening."

Elena ignored her friend and continued.

"So… what made you move to Mystic Falls?"

Alexander looked at her quietly for a moment.

His golden eyes seemed to examine her deeply.

Then he answered.

"Curiosity."

Elena blinked.

"Curiosity?"

Alexander nodded slightly.

"This town has an interesting history."

Elena laughed softly.

"That's one way to describe it."

For some reason…

Talking to him felt surprisingly comfortable.

Alexander studied her expression.

'She's even more interesting up close.'

Her emotions were genuine.

Warm.

Kind.

Very different from the many humans he had met during his long life.

Caroline suddenly stepped forward.

She crossed her arms while smiling confidently.

"And I'm Caroline."

Alexander looked at her.

"Caroline Forbes."

She seemed surprised.

"You already know my name?"

Alexander simply shrugged slightly.

"I pay attention."

Caroline looked impressed.

"I like that."

Elena laughed quietly.

Then she looked back at Alexander.

"Do you know anyone in Mystic Falls yet?"

Alexander thought for a moment.

Then he replied calmly.

"Only one person."

Elena tilted her head.

"Who?"

Alexander looked directly at her.

A faint smile appeared on his face.

"You."

Elena's cheeks turned slightly pink.

Caroline's eyes widened dramatically.

"Okay wow."

Elena tried to hide her embarrassment.

But inside…

Her heart was racing.

Meanwhile, Alexander calmly watched her reaction.

'Humans are truly fascinating.'

Especially this one.

For reasons he couldn't fully explain…

Elena Gilbert had already caught his attention.

And Alexander Nightshade rarely became interested in anyone.

Outside the school building…

Someone was watching them.

Leaning against a car with a thoughtful expression.

This was Damon Salvatore.

His eyes remained fixed on Alexander.

The mysterious transfer student.

Damon smiled slightly.

But his eyes were sharp.

"Something tells me you're not just a normal high school kid."

And Damon Salvatore always trusted his instincts.
