The air in the Shadow Zone tasted like ozone and rotting meat.

Kaelen Thorne adjusted the strap of his rusted mana-detector, wincing as the frayed nylon dug into his shoulder. It was 3:00 AM, the hour when the magical veil over Aethelgard was at its thinnest, and the monsters were at their hungriest.

"Move it, Zero," a voice growled behind him.

Kael didn't need to turn around to know it was Jax, a meat-headed Warrior with more muscle than Mana. "Zero" was Kael's nickname—short for his Mana Aptitude score. In a world where the average civilian clocked in at a 15, Kael was a flat 0.4. He was a magical anomaly, a "blank" who couldn't even light a candle with a spark-stone.

"I'm moving," Kael said, his voice raspy. He stepped over a pile of glowing blue moss, his boots squelching in the damp earth of the dungeon.

They were deep inside a Rank-C Ruin, a place Kael had no business being in. But the Iron Fang Guild was short on "canaries"—the low-ranked scavengers sent in to trigger traps before the real hunters arrived. Kael needed the credits for his sister's medicine; the guild needed a sacrificial lamb. It was a perfect, miserable arrangement.

"The detector is spiking," Kael whispered, holding up a trembling hand.

The small device in his palm began to hum, its needle vibrating violently toward a collapsed stone archway. Beyond it lay the inner sanctum of the ruin, a place where the shadows seemed to move independently of the light.

"Finally," Jax grinned, signaling the three other hunters behind him. "If there's an Essence Core in there, the Boss will give us a fat bonus. You stay here, Zero. Try not to die and ruin the loot."

The hunters pushed past Kael, their enchanted armor glowing with a soft, protective light. Kael slumped against a damp wall, his heart hammering against his ribs. He hated this feeling—the helplessness of being a spectator in a world of gods.

Minutes passed. The silence of the dungeon was heavy, pressing against his eardrums. Then, the screaming started.

It wasn't a tactical shout or a battle cry. It was pure, unadulterated terror.

BOOM!

An explosion of violet energy rocked the cavern. Dust and debris rained down from the ceiling. Kael scrambled to his feet just as Jax came sprinting back through the archway—or what was left of him. His left arm was gone, cauterized at the shoulder by something incredibly hot.

"RUN!" Jax wheezed, collapsing at Kael's feet. "It's not a C-Rank! It's a... it's a Stalker!"

Before Kael could process the word, a blur of obsidian feathers and razor-sharp talons erupted from the darkness. A Void Stalker. A Rank-A predator that shouldn't exist in these outskirts.

The creature's eyes were pits of endless night. With a single swipe, it finished what it started with Jax, the warrior's body folding like paper.

Kael backed away, his legs feeling like lead. He turned to run, but the cavern floor suddenly gave way. The explosion had compromised the structural integrity of the lower chambers.

"No, no, no—"

Kael fell. He fell through darkness, through cold air, crashing through ancient wooden scaffolding until he hit the floor of a sub-basement with a sickening crack.

Pain exploded in his chest. He tried to breathe, but only a wet, gurgling sound came out. His vision began to tunnel. Above him, he could hear the screech of the Stalker, sensing its prey, circling the hole he had just created.

So this is it, Kael thought, a bitter smile touching his lips. Dying in a hole because I couldn't even cast a shield spell. What a joke.

As his eyes began to close, a sound pierced the ringing in his ears.

Ding.

It wasn't the sound of the dungeon. It was a sound that seemed to vibrate inside his very soul.

Kael's eyes snapped open. In front of his face, a translucent blue window floated in the air.

[Do you wish to live?]

[Yes / No]

"Is... is this a hallucination?" Kael coughed, blood splattering the glowing screen.

The Void Stalker landed in the pit, its heavy talons clicking on the stone floor. It loomed over him, its beak opening to reveal rows of serrated teeth dripping with Jax's blood.

Kael looked at the creature, then at the screen. He had spent eighteen years being a "Zero." He had spent his whole life waiting for a chance to fight back.

"Yes," Kael hissed through gritted teeth. "Dammit, YES!"

Suddenly, the pain vanished. It didn't heal—it was simply pushed aside by a flood of raw, violent energy. Kael felt his muscles knit together, his senses sharpening until he could see the individual molecules of dust floating in the air.

The Stalker lunged.

Kael didn't think. He rolled to the side with a speed he never knew he possessed, his hand catching a discarded iron spike from the broken scaffolding.

The monster slammed into the wall where his head had been a second ago. Kael leapt onto the creature's back, driving the iron spike into the soft junction of its neck.

The beast shrieked, thrashing wildly. Kael held on, his eyes glowing with a faint, predatory blue light.

[Current Objective: Kill the Void Stalker.]
