Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: The Goddess of Victory

Third Person POV

While Orin no longer cursed at the mere sight of Icarus, he most certainly still didn't talk to him. And this was a fact known by most of the academy due to how famous the two are. Once again, the two seemed to ignore each other. To dissipate the awkward atmosphere, Leo spoke up. "I'm sure everyone here already knows each other at least by names and affiliations, so lets just name our role models as a way to break the ice?" He was someone who didn't like awkward silences and also didn't like getting a lot of attention. These two traits drove his entire personality and made him fairly popular in the second year. "My role model is Amaterasu, the legendary sun thread weaver. I also have similar affinities to him, so I try to utilize his fightiing techniques a lot." He looked around and his eyes landed on Nirvana. "What about you, senior?"

"My father of course." That seemed like a logical answer, considering he was Romeus Claudi, the Holy One, the most capable light and divine thread weaver currently alive. However, Leo noticed that the answer seemed half-hearted. Considering it to be a potential touchy topic for Nirvana, Leo didn't push it. "Well, what about you, Reyna?" he turned to Reyna to ask. Reyna seemed to roll her eyes at that, seeming to ask, "Really?" After a short staring contest, Reyna just sighed and said, "Achilles."

Every single person present in the room stared at her. This was because Achilles was a rather unique choice for a role model. He was famous for being a single thread weaver, but nobody knew which thread it was. The few things known about the thread are that it is not used to attack, but rather very defensively. He relied on his needle shaped like a sword to attack his opponents, almost like a swordsman. According to legends, he was never once felled in battle unless it was of his own volition, yet he died on a battlefield. As strong as he was, people have since come to realise that it is not feasible to fight like him, as the main reaso he was able to fight that way was his thread, and nobody knew which thread it was.

"Well, that explains the gladius," said Icarus. "Mine is the founder of the Veyn family, Alexander Veyn." Everyone turned towards him now. Not because what he said was illogical or absurd, but simply because not not much was known about Alexander Veyn. "Hoh! Could you tell us a bit about him? I have been very interested in the roots of such a strong family," asked Leo. "Me too," chimed in Nirvana.

"Well, I can't say much as it may contain family secrets. He was the strongest weaver of his times, capable of weaving 5 threads at the same time, and even able to weave 2 opposite threads together. He wasn't exactly the one who created the family, but he was the one who changed our family name," explained Icarus.

"Changed the family name? What was it before?" asked Leo with an extreme amount of curiosity in his eyes.

"It was Kaos. Anyways, let the other 2 speak as well," Icarus said, feeling a little uncomfortable with Leo. He turned towards Orin.

Orin was surprised that Icarus could even feel uncomfortable due to someone else, and even more surprised that he turned towards him. He ignored him and just said a single name, "Kai." This one froze everyone except Icarus right where they were. Kai was better known by his alias, The One-Winged. He was known as the incarnation of Wrath itself. He was someone who had ended the reign of the Angels single-handedly at the mere age of 24. He was a prodigy among prodigies, said to be able to weave 3 threads simultaneously at 22 and 5 at the age of 24. Yet, he was not liked by the masses and was known as a murderer due to his indiscriminate killing of the Angels. "Why that monster?" Nike opened her mouth for the first time.

"The story all the common folks know is only half of it. You know he killed angels, but not why he killed them. Our family has records of what actually happened," Orin said calmly.

"Go on then. I'd like to know more about the Greatest Genius of the New World as well," Leo said, still brimming with curiosity.

Feeling intense gazes on him, Orin sighed, "Ugh! Fine! Kai was the son of the then Ruler of Angels and a human woman. Because he was a half-angel, half-human hybrid, he was extremely despised by the angels. This was especially so because compared to angels who had 2 wings, he had only 1. He was discriminated his whole life by the Angels' royal family, who went as far as killing his mother and the few friends he had. He became an outcast. As an act of 'mercy', his father exiled him from the kingdom, hoping he could live a better life outside. And that he did. He went to the Undeyth Kingdom which was ruled by Undeyth Royal family at the time. He joined as a soldier there and quickly rose up the ranks and eventually ended up falling in love with the princess of the Kingdom and marrying her. He was already one of the strongest beings at that time at the age of only 22, and was strong enough to propel the Undeyth kingdom to the strongest human kingdom at the time. It was around this time that his father passed away as well. While he didn't know it at the time, his witch hunt had been resumed by the Angels. By the time he turned 24, he had a child with the princess, now Queen of the Undeyth Kingdom. Their child was born fully human, no wings, red eyes and red hair, taking after his father's eyes and his mother's hair color. It was around this time that he was supposedly visited by a God, but even we don't have proper records of this. The God apparently warned him of a calamity to come, and the only way his child would survive was if he gave his child to Him. Of course, Kai rejected this. But the tragedy struck. Not instantly, but like a slow poison. One day, a minister close to the Royal couple was found dead. Stabbed in 4 different locations. Another one the next day. Both arms cut off and one eye pierced. Another one the next day. Then another one. Then another one. Then another one. After a few such deaths, the Queen's father was found dead. Then her younger sister. One by one, every single of the royal family was kiled. Nobody knew who was doing it. Nobody knew how to stop it. The entire Kingdom was in a panic. Kai had a hunch it was the angels, butn othing concrete to prove it. So he just took stronger protective measures. However, 6 days later, his wife was found dead, alongside every other royal family member and minister. Only he and his son were left alive. But he knew his son would be next. So he seeked the God once again and gave Him his son. The indiscriminate killings spread out from royals to higher nobles. Kai, by this point was seething with rage, for he was sure it was the Angels' doing. However, he knew the angels were far too strong. So he didn't tell his army of his next decisions. He stormed into the Angels' kingdom himself, having received strength and power from the God. Over the next 13 days, the Angels, believed to be all powerful, were massacred. The royals, the nobles, the merchants, the commoners. Every single one of them. Killed. In cold blood. Out of spite. Out of necessity. For he knew, letting any of them live would only beget revenge. His one wing became a symbol of wrath and rage as it helped him weave with increased control and precision. By the end of the 13th day, the entire population of Angels was brought down to a few tens. And by the morning of the 14th day, none. An entire civilization demolished for meddling with the life of a singular hybrid. However, the deal with the God must have been a deal with the Devil, as he was never seen after the war. As humans rose as the top species after this, the Undeyth kingdom was never truly able to recover due to the power vacuum left behind. This was until Kai's son reclaimed the throne and renamed the family the Deyth family and merged with what is now called the Helios Empire."

"I did some digging about this 'God' figure in our family records," said Icarus. "He apparently had blue hair and blue eyes, but some other sources mention gray hair and eyes as well. So I'm not quite sure what's going on there." Orin just nodded in response.

"That was a rather loaded tale. I can sort of understand why he could be a good role model, in terms of raw strength at least," agreed Leo. "Well, everyone except you are done, Nike. Go ahead." he said looking straight at Nike, who had a bored look in her eyes. Before she could speak, a soldier of the Order of the Black Whale walked in. "Get ready for battle. Ihave been told not to give you guys any orders since you guys are strong enough to stay alive without them."

"Aww, man. Thought I'd finally hear something about Nike," joked Leo looking at Nike, who simply walked out of the room, needle in hand. As they got into teamwise formation, Leo whispered to Icarus, "She's always like this. Probably just shy."

"I never asked," retorted Icarus. Leo chuckled at that.

Before they could prepare any strategy, Nike rushed into the battlefield, expertly weaving a fire thread into an arow and flinging it at a choir beast and piercing its core. She then weaved fire threads 5 times in succession and flung 5 fire arrows at more beasts, burning them to cinders. She then wove fire and motion, guiding the fire arrow born out of it to pierce 17 choir beasts with it. Then she unleashed her most frightening move so far. She wove the singular fire thread an unbelievable number of times in succession, filling the sky with arrows of fire. As the fire arrows rained down on the land in a spectacle no less than an apocalypse, one could only wonder, just how strong of an affinity she had with the thread to be able to pull this off. As if to answer this, a strand of her jet black hair turned white. However, it didn't matter, for the spectacle just now had all but demolished the approaching wave of choir beasts. Icarus and Reyna hopped in to inspect the simmering battlefield which looked more like the entrance to hell than it every had. For a land which has never seen the Sun, this was nothing less than a supernova. The incredible amount of resonance present in the area made many of the low ranking soldiers nauseous. As they were surveying for remaining choir beasts, Nike spoke up, "Nike, the Goddess of Victory. She is my role model."
