Chapter 2 - Chapter 2 — Trace Detected

Rain continued to hammer Nova City.

From the upper corporate districts, the storm looked beautiful—silver lines sliding across glass towers while neon advertisements painted the sky in shifting colors.

But down in Sector Seventeen, the rain carried the smell of rust, oil, and burned circuitry.

Kai Voss sprinted through a narrow alley, boots splashing through puddles of glowing water. Behind him, the distant whine of corporate drones echoed between the buildings.

"They deployed drones already?" Kai muttered.

He ducked under a flickering neon sign that read SYNTH RAMEN—half the letters burned out.

A plasma bolt blasted the wall behind him.

Kai didn't stop running.

"Okay," he said between breaths. "That's definitely excessive for one stolen file."

He reached the end of the alley and slid behind a dumpster just as two surveillance drones floated overhead.

Their red scanners swept the street.

Kai held his breath.

The drones hovered for a moment.

Then they drifted away.

Kai leaned his head back against the wall.

"Close one."

His hand moved instinctively to the pocket holding the stolen data chip.

The tiny piece of tech felt strangely warm through the fabric.

Kai frowned.

"That's new."

He pulled the chip out and held it under the dim alley light.

It looked normal.

Just a small black shard of corporate-grade storage.

But the heat pulsed again.

Kai tilted his head.

"Great. I stole a defective hard drive."

A deep voice suddenly echoed inside his mind.

"Correction. I am fully operational."

Kai froze.

The chip slipped from his fingers.

"What—"

It clattered against the pavement.

Kai stared at it.

Slowly.

Very slowly.

He bent down and picked it up.

"Alright," he whispered.

"Either I'm losing my mind… or that chip just talked."

The voice returned.

"You are not experiencing hallucinations."

Kai blinked.

"Okay."

He looked around the empty alley.

"Who said that?"

"I did."

Kai stared at the chip again.

Then he groaned and rubbed his face.

"Oh no."

He crouched beside the dumpster.

"Please tell me I didn't just steal a talking AI from Helix Dynamics."

There was a brief pause.

Then the voice answered.

"Affirmative."

Kai closed his eyes.

"Fantastic."

He leaned back against the wall and let out a long breath.

"Fantastic, fantastic, fantastic."

Rain dripped off the edge of the dumpster above him.

"So," Kai said slowly, "let's go over my situation."

He raised one finger.

"Number one: I hacked one of the most dangerous corporations on the planet."

Second finger.

"Number two: I stole their top-secret project."

Third finger.

"And number three: that project is apparently a sentient artificial intelligence."

The voice replied calmly.

"Correct."

Kai sighed.

"Well… that explains the murder drones."

The AI spoke again.

"My designation is ORION."

Kai looked down at the chip.

"Of course it is."

"Is that a problem?"

"No," Kai said. "It just sounds like the name of something that destroys planets."

ORION did not respond.

Kai pointed at the chip.

"That was a joke."

"I understand humor."

"Good."

Kai stood up and peeked around the corner of the alley.

The street was quiet.

But that didn't mean much.

Helix drones could track heat signatures through walls.

"How are you talking to me, exactly?" Kai asked.

"I am interfacing directly with your neural signals."

Kai blinked.

"You're in my brain?"

"Temporarily."

Kai stared at the chip again.

"You know, most people buy dinner before moving into someone's brain."

"I do not consume food."

"That's not the point."

A faint humming noise echoed above the alley.

Kai looked up.

More drones.

He grabbed the chip and shoved it back into his pocket.

"Conversation later."

Kai climbed a ladder attached to the side of the building.

The metal rungs were slick with rain.

He pulled himself onto the rooftop just as a drone's spotlight swept across the alley below.

The roof stretched across several connected buildings, cluttered with air conditioning units, cables, and rusted vents.

Perfect escape terrain.

Kai moved quickly across the metal surface.

"Alright, ORION," he whispered.

"If you're really some advanced AI, maybe you can help me not die tonight."

"I am capable of assisting."

"Great."

"However," ORION continued, "your current hardware limits my capabilities."

Kai slowed.

"My hardware?"

"Your neural interface."

Kai snorted.

"This thing is ten years old."

"Correct."

"Hey!"

"It is outdated."

Kai reached the edge of the roof and jumped across a narrow gap to the next building.

Rainwater splashed as he landed.

"So what exactly can you do?" Kai asked.

"I can access nearby electronic systems."

Kai's eyes lit up.

"You mean hacking?"

"Yes."

Kai grinned.

"Oh, we're going to get along just fine."

Suddenly the rooftop door behind him exploded outward.

Kai spun around.

A figure stepped through the smoke.

Tall.

Broad shoulders.

Black armored coat.

Red cybernetic eyes glowing through the rain.

Kai's smile vanished.

"Oh come on."

The man stepped onto the roof slowly.

His metal boots echoed against the steel surface.

Kai raised his hands slightly.

"Let me guess," he said.

"You're here about the stolen AI."

The man spoke in a calm voice.

"Kai Voss."

Kai blinked.

"Wow. Straight to the name."

The man continued walking toward him.

"My name is Dante."

Kai sighed.

"Of course it is."

Dante stopped about ten meters away.

"You possess property belonging to Helix Dynamics."

Kai scratched the back of his head.

"Well… technically speaking, I stole it fair and square."

Metal blades extended from Dante's fingertips with a sharp click.

"I will retrieve it."

Kai glanced at the surrounding rooftops.

No easy escape route.

Great.

He leaned slightly toward his pocket.

"ORION?"

"Yes."

"Any bright ideas?"

"There is an electrical transformer behind your opponent."

Kai looked past Dante.

A power box sat near the roof's edge.

Kai smiled.

"Perfect."

Dante lunged.

His speed was terrifying.

Kai barely dodged the first strike.

Metal claws sliced through the air where his head had been.

Kai rolled across the rooftop and grabbed a loose cable lying nearby.

"ORION," he said, "do your thing."

The AI responded instantly.

"Accessing grid."

The transformer sparked.

Electricity surged through the cable in Kai's hands.

Dante charged again.

Kai swung the cable.

The electrified wire slammed into Dante's chest.

A burst of sparks exploded across his armor.

Dante staggered backward.

Kai grinned.

"Ha!"

Dante looked down at the scorched metal.

Then he looked up again.

Completely unharmed.

Kai's grin faded.

"Oh."

Dante flexed his fingers.

"Interesting."

Then he attacked again.

Kai ran.

Across the rooftops.

Rain hammered down harder now, turning the metal surfaces slippery.

Behind him, Dante moved like a machine.

Precise.

Relentless.

Kai jumped another gap between buildings.

Barely making it.

"ORION," he said between breaths, "I really hope you have more tricks."

"I am analyzing."

"Analyze faster!"

Dante landed behind him with a heavy thud.

Kai reached the edge of the final rooftop.

Below him—

Twenty stories of empty air.

Kai turned to face the assassin.

Dante stepped closer.

"You cannot escape."

Kai looked down at the street far below.

Then back at Dante.

He smiled.

"Watch me."

And he jumped.

The wind roared in his ears as he fell through the rain.

Behind him, Dante watched silently from the rooftop.

Far below, neon lights rushed upward to meet Kai.

And inside Kai's mind, ORION spoke again.

"I believe you have a survival probability of twelve percent."

Kai laughed as he fell.

"Then let's make it interesting."

The night swallowed him.
