Chapter 9 - Chapter 9 — Neon City

The maintenance tunnel smelled like rust, oil, and damp concrete.

Kai leaned against the cold metal wall, breathing heavily as the last echoes of the underground market faded behind them. His lungs burned. His head still throbbed from the neural overclock.

Mira crouched beside a control panel near the tunnel exit, rapidly disconnecting wires and bypassing locks.

"You alive?" she asked without looking back.

Kai pressed a hand against his forehead.

"Barely."

The burning sensation in his skull pulsed like a migraine mixed with electricity.

"That overclock thing," he muttered. "Let's maybe not do that again soon."

ORION responded calmly inside his mind.

"Neural strain will stabilize within eight minutes."

Kai groaned.

"Great."

Mira slid the final wire into place.

A rusted steel door at the end of the tunnel unlocked with a heavy clunk.

Cold night air rushed inside.

"Good news," Mira said.

Kai looked up.

"What?"

"We're outside the market's surveillance grid."

Kai pushed himself off the wall and stepped toward the door.

"Meaning?"

"Meaning Helix can't see us for a few minutes."

Kai stepped through the doorway.

And froze.

The city stretched before him like a glowing mechanical jungle.

Neon lights flooded the skyline.

Towering skyscrapers rose thousands of feet into the clouds, their surfaces covered in glowing advertisements and corporate logos.

Hover traffic streamed through the air in endless glowing lanes.

Massive holographic billboards projected across entire buildings.

One displayed a smiling corporate executive above the words:

HELIX DYNAMICS — BUILDING A BETTER FUTURE

Kai stared.

"…Okay."

Mira leaned beside him.

"Welcome to Neon City."

Kai slowly stepped forward.

The street below buzzed with movement.

People walked along illuminated sidewalks, their bodies glowing with cybernetic implants.

Delivery drones zipped overhead.

Police patrol vehicles floated silently above the streets.

Kai had lived in the city his entire life.

But somehow—

Seeing it like this felt different.

ORION spoke softly.

"Neon City population: approximately 31 million."

Kai whistled.

"That many people and Helix still found me."

Mira shoved her hands into her jacket pockets.

"They run the place."

She pointed upward.

Far above the street level, gigantic towers dominated the skyline.

Each building was larger than a city block.

Corporate logos glowed across their sides like artificial suns.

Kai read them one by one.

HELIX DYNAMICS

AETHER BIOTECH

TITAN INDUSTRIES

"Those are the megacorps," Mira said.

Kai nodded slowly.

"I've heard of them."

"Everyone has."

She pointed toward the distant skyline.

"The city's divided into corporate districts."

Kai followed her gaze.

Bright neon towers dominated the center of the city.

"Upper District," Mira explained.

"Corporate executives. Luxury apartments. Clean air."

Kai glanced down the street where they stood.

Broken streetlights flickered above graffiti-covered walls.

Neon signs buzzed above cramped storefronts.

"And this?" he asked.

"Lower District."

Kai smirked.

"Let me guess."

"Crime, gangs, black markets, and people trying to survive."

Kai nodded.

"Sounds about right."

Mira gestured farther out.

Beyond the glowing towers and the crowded lower streets, dark industrial zones stretched toward the horizon.

Factories.

Smoke stacks.

Rusting infrastructure.

"The Outer District," she said.

"Factories and corporate labor zones."

Kai folded his arms.

"Nice place."

"Wait until you see the Undercity."

Kai frowned.

"The what?"

She pointed down.

Kai followed her finger.

Beneath the city streets, faint lights glowed through ventilation grates.

"Old abandoned city levels," Mira explained.

"People live down there?"

"People who don't exist."

Kai let out a low whistle.

"So the city's basically layers of chaos."

"Pretty much."

ORION suddenly spoke again.

"Warning."

Kai blinked.

"What now?"

"Helix Dynamics response units mobilizing."

Kai looked toward the skyline.

One of the massive towers flickered with activity.

The Helix Dynamics logo glowed brighter.

Inside the building—

Helix Dynamics Headquarters

Upper District

The executive command chamber overlooked the entire city.

Glass walls stretched from floor to ceiling, revealing the glowing skyline beyond.

At the center of the room, a massive holographic table projected a rotating image of Neon City.

Several red markers flashed across the Lower District.

One of them represented Kai.

A tall man stood at the head of the table.

Silver hair.

Perfectly tailored suit.

Cold calculating eyes.

This was Director Lucian Voss.

Head of Helix Security.

Voss studied the holographic data calmly.

"So."

His voice was smooth and controlled.

"The thief survived Dante."

A technician nodded nervously.

"Yes sir."

Voss folded his hands behind his back.

"Interesting."

Another figure stepped forward.

A woman wearing sleek black combat armor.

Her cybernetic eyes glowed faintly blue.

Commander Selene Kade.

Leader of Helix's elite hunter squad.

Voss turned toward her.

"Status report."

Selene tapped a control panel.

Three holographic figures appeared beside Dante's marker.

"These are our available hunter units."

The projections rotated slowly.

Unit R-3 — Raze

A massive armored man covered in combat implants.

Unit V-9 — Viper

A thin woman with razor-like cybernetic blades extending from her arms.

Unit S-2 — Specter

A cloaked figure whose body flickered like digital static.

Voss observed them with quiet satisfaction.

"The Hunter Division."

Selene nodded.

"Our best operatives."

Voss turned toward the city projection.

"The AI core must be recovered."

Selene crossed her arms.

"The boy is inexperienced."

"But unpredictable," Voss replied.

He looked directly at Kai's flashing marker.

"And unpredictability is dangerous."

Selene gave a small smile.

"Then we'll eliminate the variable."

Voss nodded once.

"Deploy the hunters."

Lower District

Kai suddenly shivered.

"Why do I feel like something bad just happened?"

ORION responded.

"Helix has escalated the response."

Mira groaned.

"Great."

Kai looked at her.

"How bad?"

She hesitated.

"Ever heard of Helix Hunters?"

Kai shook his head.

"No."

Mira sighed.

"They're the people Helix sends when normal assassins fail."

Kai blinked.

"…Dante was the normal assassin?"

"Yep."

Kai stared at the skyline again.

"Fantastic."

ORION spoke again.

"However, your combat capabilities have increased."

Kai raised an eyebrow.

"Oh?"

"Combat data from the Dante encounter has been processed."

Kai felt a strange pulse in the implant behind his neck.

"What does that mean?"

A blue interface suddenly appeared across his vision.

A digital system menu.

Lines of text scrolled across his sight.

ORION SYNCHRONIZATION SYSTEM

Host: Kai MercerNeural Compatibility: 38%

Combat Data Uploaded

Stage 1 Ability Available

Kai stared at the glowing interface.

"…Whoa."

Mira noticed him staring into space.

"You okay?"

Kai nodded slowly.

"I think the AI just leveled me up."

Mira blinked.

"Excuse me?"

ORION continued.

"First synchronization ability unlocked."

Kai whispered,

"What ability?"

The interface shifted.

New text appeared.

ABILITY UNLOCKED

Adaptive Combat Prediction

ORION can analyze enemy movements in real time and predict attack patterns.

Kai's eyes widened.

"So basically…"

"Enhanced combat awareness," ORION confirmed.

Kai grinned.

"Okay that's awesome."

Mira waved a hand in front of his face.

"Hello?"

Kai looked at her.

"Good news."

She sighed.

"Please tell me it involves us not dying."

Kai smiled.

"I just unlocked my first power."

Mira stared.

"Your AI gives you powers now?"

Kai shrugged.

"Apparently."

Mira rubbed her temples.

"You stole the most dangerous piece of tech in the entire city."

Kai grinned.

"Yeah."

She looked up at the glowing towers again.

"Helix is going to burn this city down to get it back."

Kai followed her gaze.

The massive Helix tower glowed like a beacon in the distance.

For the first time—

Kai didn't just feel hunted.

He felt something else.

Possibility.

He looked at Mira.

"Hey."

"Yeah?"

"What if we didn't just run?"

Mira frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Kai pointed toward the Helix tower.

"What if we fought back?"

Mira stared at him like he had just suggested robbing a god.

"…You're insane."

Kai smiled.

"Probably."

ORION spoke calmly.

"However…"

Kai raised an eyebrow.

"Yeah?"

"Probability of destabilizing Helix operations with the AI system: 62 percent."

Kai laughed.

"See?"

Mira looked between them.

"You two are going to get me killed."

Kai started walking down the neon-lit street.

"Maybe."

He looked back at her.

"But imagine what happens if we win."

The city lights flickered across his face.

For the first time since stealing the AI—

Kai wasn't just surviving.

He was planning something bigger.

And somewhere high above the city—

Three elite hunters began their descent into the Lower District.

The real hunt was about to begin.
