Chapter 3 - FIRST CLASH

The library was quiet—soft murmurs, pages turning, the faint scent of coffee from the nearby café. Mei Lin settled at a corner table with her books, determined to finish her essay ahead of the deadline. Focus was everything.

"Mind if I sit here?" a voice said.

Mei Lin looked up to see Daniel Zhao, his usual confident smirk in place. She hesitated, then nodded reluctantly.

"You're always here first," Daniel said, glancing at her notes. "Trying to steal the spotlight again?"

"I'm just… doing my work," Mei Lin replied evenly. "I don't compete for attention."

Daniel leaned back in his chair, arms crossed. "Funny how it looks that way to everyone else. Especially him." He gave a subtle nod toward the library entrance.

Mei Lin's heart skipped. Of course—Professor Chen had been walking through the library just moments before, stopping briefly near her table, glancing over her notes with that calm, assessing expression. She had tried not to notice, but Daniel clearly had.

"You're lucky," Daniel continued, voice low but sharp. "Most people would kill for half the attention you get."

"I'm not lucky," Mei Lin said, her tone firm. "I earned it."

Daniel's smirk faltered for a fraction of a second before returning. "We'll see how long that lasts."

Later that afternoon, the lecture hall was buzzing again. Students were whispering about Daniel's comments and Mei Lin's "favoritism," though no one said it outright. Mei Lin kept her focus, determined not to give anyone the satisfaction of seeing her shaken.

Professor Chen entered, and the room immediately went silent. He began his lecture, moving with the same precise, commanding presence that made every word feel important. Mei Lin raised her hand to answer a question—her voice steady, clear.

"Very good," Chen said softly, nodding at her. His gaze lingered for a heartbeat longer than necessary, and Mei Lin felt heat rise to her cheeks. Not embarrassment, exactly, but something closer to… awareness. A small, quiet acknowledgment that she had been seen. Really seen.

Daniel shifted in his seat, narrowing his eyes, and Mei Lin realized she wasn't just competing with grades anymore—she was navigating attention, rivalry, and reputation all at once.

After class, Mei Lin packed her bag and caught a glance of Professor Chen leaving. Their eyes met briefly in the hallway. Nothing was said, but in that fleeting moment, a connection sparked—subtle, almost imperceptible, but undeniable.

This is going to be more complicated than I thought, she thought as she walked toward the courtyard. Daniel's smirk was waiting, but this time, she didn't feel afraid. She felt ready.
