Chapter 10 - Under the Weeping Oak

The rain intensified, turning the playground into a blurred landscape of grey and green. Nancy stepped forward, her yellow umbrella a lonely splash of color against the storm. She reached the edge of the sandbox and held the umbrella over Lucifer, shielding him from the downpour.

For a long minute, neither spoke. The only sound was the heavy rhythmic drumming of water against the fabric above them.

"Why didn't you say anything, Lucifer?" Nancy's voice was barely audible over the rain. "On the first day... when you saw the marble. Why did you pretend you didn't know me?"

Lucifer looked down at his boots, now soaked and covered in mud. "Because the girl I remembered was full of light," he said, his voice raw. "And the person I've become... I didn't want to ruin your memory of that boy. I thought if I stayed a stranger, you could keep your 'Chief Builder' perfect in your head."

"He wasn't perfect," Nancy countered, a small, sad smile breaking through her tears. "He was bossy and he cried when the sandcastle fell. But he was my best friend. And you're still him, even if you've grown tall and grumpy."

Lucifer finally looked at her. The coldness in his eyes had melted into a deep, aching vulnerability. "My dad... he intercepted your letters, Nancy. For years, I thought you had moved on. I thought the promise only mattered to me."

Nancy gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "I wrote to you every week for two years, Lucifer. I thought you had just... forgotten."

The weight of fifteen years of misunderstanding crashed down on them. All the anger, the distance, and the icy silence of the last few weeks—it was all built on a foundation of stolen letters.

Lucifer reached out, his hand hesitating before he gently brushed a wet strand of hair from Nancy's face. "I never forgot. I kept a picture of this playground in my wallet until it fell apart."

Under the shadow of the old oak tree, the "Familiar Strangers" were finally gone. In their place stood two people who had finally found the way home.
