Chapter 1 - CHAPTER 1 The System That Shouldn’t Exist

Breathing hurt.

Each inhale scraped Kai's lungs like broken glass.

Cold air flooded his chest, sharp with the scent of damp soil and crushed leaves. His fingers twitched against the ground, digging into dark, wet earth.

He coughed violently.

Dirt stuck to his lips as he rolled onto his back.

Above him stretched a sky that should not exist.

Violet.

Not sunset. Not sunrise.

An endless expanse of deep purple clouds drifting across an alien sky.

Kai blinked slowly.

"…What…?"

His voice sounded unfamiliar. Rough. Unsteady.

He forced himself upright.

Tall grass brushed against his shoulders. Ancient trees towered around him, their trunks thick as pillars, vines hanging like curtains of moss.

This wasn't a park.

This wasn't anywhere he recognized.

There were no roads.

No buildings.

Only forest.

Kai pressed his fingers to his temple. A dull ache pulsed behind his eyes.

Fragments of memory flickered.

Bright lights.

A city street.

The sound of traffic.

Then—

Falling.

Everything shattering.

His breath caught.

A voice suddenly echoed inside his mind.

Cold.

Precise.

Inhuman.

SYSTEM INITIALIZING…

Kai froze.

The voice wasn't sound.

It was inside his thoughts.

Words forming directly in his mind.

HOST DETECTED

BINDING SEQUENCE BEGINNING

"What… is this?"

His heartbeat accelerated.

Light appeared behind his eyes—fractured, crystalline.

Lines of glowing symbols formed in the darkness of his mind like pieces of broken code.

ANALYZING HOST BIOLOGY…

The voice abruptly stuttered.

Static ripped through his skull.

ERROR

The word crashed through his mind like thunder.

Kai grabbed his head.

"AH—!"

Pain exploded across his nerves.

The glowing symbols shattered.

Fragments scattered through his mind like shards of glass.

CRITICAL FAILURE

SYSTEM CORE DAMAGE DETECTED

"No—!"

Kai didn't even know why he shouted.

But instinct screamed that something massive—something impossible—was breaking apart.

SYSTEM COLLAPSE INITIATED

The light fractured completely.

Then the fragments rushed toward him.

REMNANTS MERGING WITH HOST

Energy surged through his body.

His muscles locked.

His heart raced—then slowed—then raced again.

His bones vibrated.

Every cell in his body trembled as if rewriting itself.

Kai gasped.

Then suddenly—

Silence.

The voice disappeared.

The system was gone.

But something inside him had changed.

Kai slowly lifted his head.

The world snapped into focus.

Sharper.

Clearer.

He could see individual veins in the leaves above him.

Tiny insects crawling across the bark of a tree several meters away.

Dust drifting through the air.

Then he noticed something else.

The air itself shimmered.

Faint streams of light flowed through the forest like invisible rivers.

Blue.

Green.

Gold.

Energy.

Kai stared.

"What… is that?"

One of the glowing streams drifted toward him.

The moment it touched his skin—

His body reacted.

His breathing slowed automatically.

His heartbeat stabilized.

Every muscle aligned with perfect balance.

Kai's eyes widened.

He could feel the energy moving.

Flowing.

Everywhere.

"You're finally awake."

Kai spun around.

An old man stood several steps away, leaning on a weathered wooden staff.

His hair was pure white, tied loosely behind his head. His face was lined with deep wrinkles carved by decades of wind and sun.

But his eyes were sharp.

Too sharp.

The old man studied Kai for a moment before speaking again.

"You collapsed in the forest."

His voice was calm but rough like dry bark.

"I thought you might be dead."

Kai blinked.

"Where am I?"

The old man raised an eyebrow.

"You don't know?"

Kai slowly shook his head.

The old man sighed.

"Green River Valley. Outer forest."

He tapped his staff lightly against the ground.

"What were you doing out here, boy?"

"I—"

Kai hesitated.

He genuinely didn't know.

Before he could answer—

A low growl rolled through the trees.

Both men turned.

The bushes rustled.

A wolf stepped into the clearing.

But it wasn't normal.

Its eyes glowed faint red.

And surrounding its body—

Kai saw it clearly.

Crimson energy flowing beneath its fur like burning veins.

His breath caught.

"I can see it…"

The old man frowned.

"See what?"

"The energy."

Kai pointed.

"Inside the wolf."

The old man froze.

"What did you say?"

The wolf lowered its body.

Muscles tightening.

Preparing to attack.

Kai didn't panic.

His body was already adjusting.

Breathing slowed.

Weight shifted.

Every movement aligned with perfect balance.

The wolf lunged.

A blur of claws and teeth.

Kai stepped sideways.

Perfect timing.

The wolf's jaws snapped shut inches from his shoulder.

Kai turned.

His fist shot forward.

A precise strike slammed into the wolf's ribs.

CRACK.

The beast yelped and stumbled across the ground.

The old man stared in disbelief.

"You—!"

The wolf tried to stand again, but its hind leg trembled.

Kai tilted his head.

"The back leg."

He pointed calmly.

"Old injury. Its energy flow is unstable there."

The old man's eyes widened.

The wolf snarled again.

But this time…

It hesitated.

Something in Kai's posture made the beast uneasy.

Kai stepped forward.

The wolf's ears flattened.

Then suddenly—

It turned and fled into the forest.

Silence returned.

The old man slowly lowered his staff.

He stared at Kai as if seeing something impossible.

"You can see Qi."

Kai looked down at his hands.

The glowing streams of energy still drifted around him.

Through him.

Inside him.

"I think so."

The old man's expression darkened slightly.

"Boy… what exactly happened to you?"

Kai hesitated.

Fragments of shattered light flickered in his mind.

Broken code.

Shattered symbols.

Then a strange realization surfaced.

The system hadn't vanished.

It had changed.

Merged.

Adapted.

His muscles flexed slightly.

Perfect control.

His heartbeat slowed on command.

Every movement precise.

Optimized.

Kai exhaled slowly.

"…I think something broke."

The old man frowned.

"What broke?"

Kai looked up at the endless violet sky.

"Something that wasn't supposed to."

Wind moved through the trees.

Streams of Qi shimmered across the forest like flowing stars.

And somewhere far beyond the valley—

Something ancient felt the disturbance.
