Chapter 13 - STORM ON THE HORIZON

The supermarket was quiet after Chen Wei's flight, but the silence was heavy, not peaceful. Sun Jun and Lin Yue patched barricades, reset traps, and tended to wounds. Yet both knew the reprieve was temporary. Chen Wei had fled, but his vow of revenge lingered like thunderclouds on the horizon.

Days passed. The newcomers who had survived the betrayal were gone, scattered with Chen Wei. The supermarket felt emptier, but not safer. Lin Yue moved like a shadow, her knife always ready, her eyes scanning the perimeter. Sun Jun trained harder, honing his thunder ability, sparks dancing at his fingertips. The system rewarded him with subtle upgrades, but each chime felt less like triumph and more like warning. Power was growing, but so were the threats.

One evening, as the sun dipped below the ruins, Lin Yue returned from scouting with grim news. "Chen Wei isn't gone," she whispered. "He's gathering others. Stragglers, scavengers, anyone desperate enough to follow him. He's promising them food. Promising them your secret."

Sun Jun's chest tightened. "He's building an army."

Lin Yue nodded. "And he'll bring them here."

---

The days that followed were tense. Sun Jun and Lin Yue fortified the supermarket, turning ruins into fortress. They reinforced walls with scavenged steel, set traps across every entrance, and stockpiled supplies. Yet unease gnawed at them. Chen Wei's greed had already sparked betrayal. Now, with reinforcements, he could strike harder, stronger.

At night, Sun Jun stared into the fire, electricity humming faintly beneath his skin. "Monsters are simple," he murmured. "They attack, we fight, we survive. But humans… humans are worse. They scheme. They betray."

Lin Yue's gaze was steady. "Then we fight them the same way we fight monsters. Together."

Her words grounded him. Together. It was the only way.

---

The storm came sooner than expected. One night, guttural roars mixed with human shouts. A swarm of zombies pressed against the barricades, but behind them, Chen Wei's voice rang out, commanding. He had driven the horde toward the supermarket, using them as living weapons. Behind the chaos, figures moved—armed survivors, desperate and hungry.

Sun Jun's heart pounded. "He's using the dead to break us."

Lin Yue's traps snapped, cans rattled, wires tripped. Zombies fell, wounded, but more pressed forward. Chen Wei's men surged behind them, weapons raised. The supermarket shook with battle cries and shrieks.

Sun Jun rose, lightning blazing across his skin. He unleashed bolts, frying zombies, arcs cascading across the horde. Lin Yue struck from the shadows, her traps wounding men, her knife flashing. The battle was chaos, storm and steel clashing against hunger and greed.

---

Chen Wei appeared at the front, his machete gleaming, his eyes burning with fury. "You think you can hoard power?" he roared. "You think you can keep it from us? Tonight, it's mine!"

Sun Jun met his gaze, electricity crackling. "You'll never take it."

Chen Wei charged, but Sun Jun unleashed a thunderstorm burst. Lightning cascaded, arcs spearing into Chen Wei's men, convulsing them, scattering them. Lin Yue's traps snapped, stakes piercing, wires tripping. The supermarket lit with blinding flashes, the air thick with ozone.

Chen Wei staggered, his men falling around him. Yet his fury did not falter. "Monster!" he spat. "You can't fight us all. More will come. More will take what you hide."

Sun Jun's storm surged, his eyes blazing. "Then let them come."

---

The battle raged, but Chen Wei's men faltered. Lightning struck, traps snapped, steel clashed. One by one, they fell, wounded or fleeing. Chen Wei himself staggered back, his eyes wide with fear. He had underestimated the storm again. He had thought numbers would win. But Sun Jun and Lin Yue fought with unity, with strength, with resolve.

Finally, Chen Wei fled once more, his vow echoing through the ruins. "This isn't over! I'll return! I'll bring more!"

---

Silence returned, broken only by the crackle of fading electricity and the ragged breaths of survivors. Sun Jun stood trembling, his chest heaving, his body drained. Lin Yue moved to his side, her knife still in hand, her eyes steady. "We stopped them," she said softly. "For now."

Sun Jun exhaled, his fists unclenching. "But he'll be back. And next time, he won't come alone."

Lin Yue nodded. "Then we'll be ready."

---

The supermarket was scarred anew, but still standing. Sun Jun felt the weight of his system heavier than ever. It was salvation, but it was also curse. To share was to risk betrayal. To hide was to invite suspicion. And now, betrayal had struck twice, proving that humans were more dangerous than monsters.

Yet beside him, Lin Yue stood firm. Her presence was steady, her resolve unshaken. Together, they had faced beasts. Together, they had faced betrayal. And together, they would endure.

Sun Jun looked at her, electricity flickering faintly in his eyes. "We'll be ready," he said quietly. "Whatever comes."

Lin Yue's lips curved into the faintest shadow of a smile. "Together."

---

Outside, the night was quiet. But Chen Wei's vow lingered, heavy as thunderclouds. The storm was only beginning.
