Chapter 34 - Chapter 34- lies with thoughts

The morning at Aurelia Academy felt like a staged play. As the black Vane sedan pulled up to the curb, the usual chatter of students died down into a low, expectant hum. Raphael stepped out, his expression one of calm, undisputed victory. He reached back, and Dafne emerged, her silver dress from the night before replaced by a crisp, sharp uniform that seemed to wear her rather than the other way around.

Leo, Maya, and Chloe were waiting by the stone arches, their faces gaunt. They stepped forward as a unit, but Raphael didn't even break his stride. He stopped just inches from them, his hand resting firmly on Dafne's shoulder.

"Dafne," Raphael said, his voice dropping into that dark, resonant frequency that made the air feel heavy. "Since your 'friends' are so obsessed with your schedule, let's simplify it. For the rest of the day, you will not leave my side. You will sit with me at lunch, you will walk with me between classes, and you will ignore any 'noise' that suggests you belong anywhere else. Do you understand?"

Dafne's chin tilted up, her eyes glassy but locked onto his. "I understand, Raphael."

"This is kidnapping!" Chloe cried, her voice cracking. "You're literally parading her around like an object!"

"I'm providing her with a stable environment," Raphael countered, his eyes flicking to Leo with a sneer. "Something your 'care' clearly couldn't manage. She's peaceful now. Look at her."

"She's a ghost!" Leo roared, lunging forward. He grabbed Raphael's lapel, but Raphael didn't flinch.

"Careful, Leo," Raphael whispered, loud enough for the gathering crowd to hear. "If you make a scene, you'll only distress her. And we know how she reacts to distress, don't we? She screams for her protector. She screams for me."

Maya tried to reach for Dafne's hand, but as she moved, Dafne veered sharply behind Raphael, her face twisting into a mask of redirected fear. The "crawling" command from the night before was still active; the touch of her friends felt like fire.

The fight escalated into a flurry of shouting and shoved shoulders until a faculty member broke them apart. Raphael simply smoothed his suit, tucked Dafne's arm into his, and walked into the building, leaving the others trembling in the wake of his absolute control.

The Outsider's GambitJuliet stood by the lockers, her arms crossed, watching the entire explosion with narrowed eyes. She had seen the screaming, the shaking, and the way Raphael's voice seemed to physically pull Dafne's strings.

When the trio of Leo, Maya, and Chloe retreated into a huddle, Juliet marched up to them.

"Okay, enough," Juliet snapped. "What is that? Why is she acting like a robot, and why is Raphael talking like he's her remote control?"

Leo looked at her, his jaw tight. "It's family business, Juliet. Stay out of it."

"Family business doesn't usually involve girls turning into mannequins," Juliet countered. She looked at Maya, who was sobbing into Chloe's shoulder. "Maya? What did he do to her?"

"We can't tell you," Chloe whispered, shaking her head. "It's too dangerous. For her and for us."

Juliet stared at them for a long moment. She realized they were too terrified to speak. They were protecting a secret that was currently strangling the girl they loved. "Fine," Juliet said, her voice turning cold. "Keep your secrets. I'll find someone who actually wants to talk."

The Sterling BluffJuliet didn't go to class. Instead, she walked straight out of the school gates and headed toward the Sterling estate. She didn't have any facts, no files, and no proof—only a sharp mind and a talent for a high-stakes bluff.

When Sarah Sterling opened the door, she looked like a woman who hadn't slept in a century.

"Juliet? Dafne isn't here," Sarah said, her voice trembling.

Juliet didn't flinch. She leaned against the doorframe, adopting a look of grim, absolute certainty. "I know she isn't here, Mrs. Sterling. I'm here because the situation at school has peaked. I know everything. I know why she's doing exactly what Raphael says. I know about the 'condition' and what happened before you moved here."

Sarah went paper-white. She gripped the doorframe so hard her knuckles turned grey. "You... how? Who told you?"

"It doesn't matter who told me," Juliet lied, her voice steady and clinical. "What matters is that Raphael isn't the only one who can use this information. If I know, others will find out soon. You need to tell me the full details—the medical specifics—if you want me to help Leo and the others stop him before it goes public."

Sarah's resistance crumbled under the weight of her own guilt. She stumbled back into the foyer, her hands shaking. "We just wanted her to be safe," she sobbed, leading Juliet into the living room where David sat, staring at a blank TV screen. "We didn't know the Vanes would find out. We didn't know she was a 'Cassandra' case until the roof accident..."

For the next hour, Juliet sat in silence as the Sterlings, believing she already knew the core truth, filled in every missing piece of the puzzle. They told her about the Echo—the neurological "glitch" that forced Dafne to obey any command given in a specific, resonant frequency. They explained the trauma of the old school and the Henderson files that Raphael was using for blackmail.

"She's a biological slave to whoever has the strongest voice," David whispered, his head in his hands. "And right now... that's Raphael. He found the 'Primary' tone."

Juliet sat back, her heart racing as she absorbed the horror of it. She had walked in with nothing but a guess, and walked out with the blueprints to Dafne's soul. She finally understood the "Strings."
