Chapter 9
Daniel clenched his fists as the door slammed behind Adrian.
"That arrogant bastard!" he snapped. "How dare he talk to you like that?"
But Lena didn't respond.
She sat frozen in the chair, her eyes staring at the door Adrian had just walked through. Her heart felt like it had been crushed.
The doctor cleared his throat awkwardly.
"Miss Carter… are you alright?"
Lena slowly wiped the tears from her face, forcing herself to breathe.
"Yes… I'm fine."
But her voice trembled.
Daniel knelt in front of her.
"Listen to me," he said firmly. "You don't need someone like him."
Lena shook her head slowly.
"You don't understand…" Her voice was barely above a whisper. "He wasn't always like this."
Daniel frowned but didn't interrupt.
Lena lowered her eyes.
"That night… he told me he trusted me."
The memory stabbed painfully in her chest. She had believed him. Believed that behind Adrian's cold exterior, there was someone who cared.
But today proved she had been wrong. Completely wrong.
Daniel sighed and gently helped her stand up.
"Come on. Let's go home."
Lena nodded weakly. As they walked toward the exit, she couldn't stop herself from glancing back one last time. But Adrian was gone. Completely gone.
The rain had started pouring heavily outside the hospital. Daniel quickly called for a taxi while Lena stood under the shelter, hugging herself tightly. The cold wind brushed against her face. Her hand slowly moved to her stomach. A tiny life was growing there. A life that had just been rejected by its own father.
Lena closed her eyes as tears slipped down again.
"I'll protect you," she whispered softly. "No matter what happens."
---
The taxi ride was quiet. Daniel kept glancing at her, worried, but he didn't press. He knew words couldn't fix this—not yet. Lena rested her head against the window, watching the rain streak the glass. Every drop mirrored the ache inside her.
She thought of Adrian—the man who had ignited her world in ways no one else could. She thought of the way he had looked at her in the hospital, the disbelief and coldness in his eyes. How quickly he had denied their child. How easily he had walked out.
*He doesn't understand…* she thought bitterly. *And maybe he never will.*
Daniel cleared his throat gently. "Do you want me to drive you somewhere else? Maybe a friend's place? Just until you… settle your thoughts?"
Lena shook her head. "No. I need to think. I need to figure out what comes next… for the baby."
Daniel's hand rested on her shoulder. "Then we'll figure it out together."
But Lena didn't respond. She felt torn between anger, hurt, and a flicker of longing. She wanted to scream, to call Adrian back, to demand he face the truth—but her pride and fear of more rejection held her back.
When they reached her apartment building, Daniel helped her inside. She changed into something comfortable, sitting by the window as the rain pounded on the city outside. She could feel the tiny life inside her move, a reminder that she wasn't entirely alone.
Meanwhile, Adrian was pacing in his office. The skyline outside reflected off the glass, but he barely noticed. His phone buzzed repeatedly with missed calls from Lena. His emails sat unopened. All he could think about was the image of her sitting in that hospital room, eyes full of hurt, voice trembling.
He had been too fast, too harsh, too prideful. And now she was gone.
He picked up his phone, dialing her number again and again. Nothing. Straight to voicemail. Each unanswered ring tightened the knot in his chest.
Adrian slammed his phone onto the desk, frustration boiling into panic. "Where is she?" he demanded to the empty office. "Where is she, and why didn't I stop her?"
Hours passed. He reviewed every message, replayed every memory, every look, every word, trying to figure out where he went wrong. He didn't yet know the truth: the misunderstanding with Daniel, the doctor's innocent words, Lena's need for space—all of it had built a wall between them.
And somewhere across the city, Lena sat silently, her hand resting protectively over her stomach. She knew Adrian would be looking for her, she just didn't know how far he would go—or if he would ever understand.
The rain slowed to a soft drizzle as night settled over the city. Lights twinkled in the distance, but Lena barely noticed them. Her mind was occupied with a single thought: protecting her child.
And Adrian Blackwood, pacing restlessly, had no idea that the woman he loved—and the child he didn't yet realize he had—was quietly planning her next move.
Somewhere in the dark, both hearts were tethered together by one unspoken truth:
They couldn't stay apart forever.
But neither of them knew how long it would take to bridge the gap—or what it would cost.
