Chapter Sixteen
What Phenex Did in the Hallway"There are provocations. And then there are things designed to make you react badly in public. Ren Phenex knew exactly which one this was."
Four days before the Rating Game.
Ren Phenex came back to school.
Not for a challenge. Not with fire in his hands.
Just, present. In the corridors. In the cafeteria. Moving through Kurenai Academy like he belonged there, with two members of his own peerage at his back, watching everything and saying nothing.
Kaito noticed on day one and said nothing.
Seraphina noticed on day one and said nothing.
Mira noticed on day one and visibly needed to be talked down from saying something.
On day two, Ren sat at the table next to the peerage table in the cafeteria.
Close enough to hear everything.
He ate his lunch. Didn't speak to them. Didn't look at them.
Just, present. A deliberate pressure.
On day three, he found Mira alone in the corridor outside the training annex.
Kaito wasn't there. He learned about it from Hana, thirty minutes later, in a tone of voice that made him walk faster.
Mira was in the training room when he arrived. She was fine, physically, entirely fine. She was sitting on the bench, braids slightly undone, doing something to her hand wrappings with a focused, controlled precision that meant she was managing something.
"What happened," Kaito said.
"Nothing serious," she said. "He just talked."
"What did he say."
A pause.
"He said that after the tournament, House Valcrest's territory in the northern sector is going to be absorbed. He said Seraphina will have to dissolve the peerage and align with Phenex or lose everything." She looked at her wrappings. "He said that anyone smart would switch sides before the tournament. That staying loyal to House Valcrest right now is," she stopped.
"What," said Kaito.
"He said staying loyal to Seraphina right now is something only someone sentimental would do."
Quiet.
Mira was not looking at him. She was looking at her hands.
"He meant it as an insult," she said. "The sentimental part." She paused. "I told him I was very sentimental and also that I had a socket wrench in my bag and he should consider the geometry of the situation before continuing."
Kaito said nothing for a moment.
Then: "Did he continue?"
"No." She smiled, brief and real. "He's smart."
Kaito looked at the wall.
Something cold and very clear settled in his chest.
Not the Void Sovereign. That was warm, active, always present.
This was something older. Something simpler.
Resolve.
"Mira," he said.
"Yeah."
"We're going to win this tournament."
She looked at him.
"I know," she said. "I've known since day one."
"Not for the territory. Not for the politics."
He met her eyes.
"Because Ren Phenex just called you sentimental like it was something to be ashamed of. And I want to see his face when we take the first place ranking with a King piece that's been a devil for six weeks."
Mira was quiet for a moment.
Then she stood up, tightened her wrappings, and pointed at the door.
"Training room," she said. "Right now. We have four days and I am going to teach you the counter I've been holding back."
"You've been holding something back?"
"I'm a Knight," she said. "I always hold something back."
They went to train.
That evening, in the corridor outside the dining room, Kaito told Seraphina what Ren had said to Mira.
He told her all of it. The territory threat. The peerage dissolution. The sentimental remark.
Seraphina listened without interrupting.
When he finished, she was quiet for a moment.
Then she said, very calmly:
"He came to my Knight."
Not a question.
"Yes," Kaito said.
"In my house's training annex."
"Yes."
A long pause.
Seraphina turned and walked toward the dining room.
Her voice, when it came, was completely level.
"In four days," she said, "I am going to take everything he owns on that game board."
She went inside.
Kaito stood in the corridor.
The Void Sovereign pulsed once, steady, sure.
Four days.
