Chapter 3 - PRODIGIES, PARANOIA, AND THE WILL OF FIRE

Inside the classroom of the newly established Ninja Academy, the air was thick with the high-pitched chaos of nearly twenty toddlers. Most were three or four years old, possessing the natural social lubrication of childhood that allowed them to bond instantly despite being strangers. Six-year-old Aki, however, sat like a glacier in their midst. His cold, detached demeanor broadcast a clear "do not disturb" signal to his peers. Having the soul of a forty-year-old man made it impossible to sincerely engage in their games, so he found it far more practical to maintain the mask of an icy loner. Leaning against his desk by the window, he stared at the world outside, his mind once again drifting into a trance-like state.

The classroom door slid open, and a man dressed in the standard tactical gear of a Konoha shinobi entered. Surveying the unruly crowd, he let out a sharp cough. "Everyone, take your seats. Class is in session". The children spared him a glance before immediately returning to their shouting and wrestling.

Thwack! Bam! Thud!

Ten minutes of "aggressive discipline" later, the children were finally silent—a testament to the fact that, in the world of shinobi, force remained the most effective pedagogical tool.

Satisfied with the now-compliant rows of students, the teacher nodded. "To help you get to know your classmates, we will begin with introductions. I'll start. My name is Sato Ueno, a Chunin of this village. I enjoy reading and I love Konoha. My goal is to guide you into becoming fine shinobi so that I may contribute my strength to our home. Now, your turn".

Jiraiya, his white hair a chaotic mess, stood on his chair with one foot on the desk. "I'm Jiraiya! I'm three years old, and I love Tsunade more than anything! I hate that guy and that guy!" He pointed a finger at Aki by the window and then at a pale, long-haired boy sitting in the far corner. "My dream is to become a man like the Hokage and protect Konoha!". The class erupted in cheers at his boisterous declaration. Aki let out a soft, barely audible chuckle. They truly are happy, he thought. Konoha is a decent place, at least on the surface. The darkness I know only lives within the walls of my clan's compound.

Tsunade stood up next, her blonde pigtails bouncing. "I am Tsunade Senju, also three. You can call me Tsunade. I like rolling dice, gambling, and making friends with handsome guys". She then glared at Jiraiya with a look of pure disdain. "I hate Jiraiya, and my dream is to win all the money in the entire world!".

When it was finally Aki's turn, he stood slowly. "I am Uchiha Aki. I am six. I like many things and dislike just as many. As for a dream... I don't have one yet".

Finally, the pale boy in the corner rose. "My name is Orochimaru. I am three. I like my mother's cooking and my father's stories. My dream is to become a great shinobi so I can protect my parents and this village from ever being hurt. And I hate Jiraiya".

And so, Aki's life at the Ninja Academy began.

March, the 13th Year of Konoha

High atop a jagged peak in the Land of Earth, the Second Tsuchikage, Mu, looked down at the Hidden Stone Village. He turned to his disciple, Onoki, whose back was already beginning to ache.

"Onoki, the balance of the world has shattered," Mu said, his voice raspy. "The death of Madara Uchiha marks the decline of Konoha as the absolute power. The Takikage has suggested we weaponize the Tailed Beasts for the battlefield. It is the only way to escape the humiliation of bowing to the Leaf. Our Daimyo refuses to pay further tribute to the Land of Fire and has pledged his full support. Why should the First Hokage decide how the Tailed Beasts are distributed? If we secure two or more, we break the status quo. If we gain more, the Land of Fire will bow to us, and the insult Konoha dealt us years ago will be repaid in blood".

Onoki looked at his master and sighed inwardly. The blow Madara dealt to his pride was too great, he thought. The First Tsuchikage's resentful passing has only deepened my master's hatred. I wonder how many shinobi will die in the coming war.

Across the continent in the Land of Wind, the First Kazekage stared at the horizon. "Begin the operation. Our target is the Five-Tails. No sacrifice is too great for such power".

"Understood!" The gathered shinobi vanished into the desert sands. The Kazekage remained, his eyes unreadable as he watched over his village.

In the Land of Lightning, the Second Raikage sat in his grand hall. "The Hidden Waterfall is moving, and the Stone and Mist are stockpiling weapons. Trouble is brewing. Guard the borders. I will consult with the Daimyo, but in the meantime, tighten the security on our Jinchuriki and begin hoarding supplies. Do you understand?".

"Yes, Lord Raikage!". As they left, the Raikage turned to the window. I hope to the heavens that nothing catastrophic happens during this window of tension.

Back in the Land of Fire, standing atop his own carved likeness, Hashirama Senju looked down at the village with a peaceful smile. A blur of motion appeared behind him as a man with graying hair and the Hokage robes materialized.

"Brother, the situation is critical," Tobirama Senju said. "The Stone is restless, and the arms race has reached a fever pitch. War is inevitable if this continues, yet the Daimyo refuses to listen to my warnings".

Hashirama laughed softly. "It's fine. As long as you and I are here, they won't dare move. If they try anything, I don't mind showing them my shadow one last time. But tell me, Tobirama... are you aware of the instability within our own walls?".

"You mean the clan elders?".

"They listen while we are here," Hashirama noted. "But if anything happens to us, they will try to hollow out the position of Hokage. The very clans that made us strong have put us in a dangerous position".

"Brother, my disciples Hiruzen Sarutobi and Danzō Shimura are capable successors," Tobirama countered. "I am training them hard. In time, they will be the pillars of Konoha. You needn't worry about the village's protection. What I am worried about... is your health. Is there truly no way?".

"I know my own body, Tobirama. I'll be healthy enough for a while longer".

"Damn Madara Uchiha," Tobirama hissed. "If I had killed him years ago, you wouldn't have had to overtax your life force to end that fight".

"He was my friend," Hashirama said gently. "When I took his life, I understood the path I had chosen. Now, the priority is the Nine-Tails and that child from the Uchiha family".

Tobirama's expression darkened. "You mean Uchiha Aki? There is nothing to worry about. Killing a Madara in the making while he is a child is easier than crushing an ant. The Uchiha wouldn't dare retaliate".

"Tobirama! I will not allow that!" Hashirama's voice took on a rare edge of steel. "He is a child. He is growing up in a different world than Madara did. He is a genius of the Leaf—he is our future".

"The power of the Uchiha is rooted in hatred," Tobirama argued. "Aki has been an anomaly since birth. His talent for chakra control and ninjutsu is the highest I have ever seen—greater than yours or mine. Show me another six-year-old who can chain two B-rank techniques in under a minute. But it's his eyes, brother. He looks at everyone as if he is standing on a mountain looking down at insects. He is Madara, but reinforced. We cannot let him remain".

"Tobirama, enough!" Hashirama barked. "Your prejudice toward the Uchiha is blinding you. You have put them in an impossible position. Do you intend to push them until they revolt just so you can justify exterminating them?. It is wrong. Starting tomorrow, I will personally oversee that boy's education. I believe people can change. He is not Madara, and he should not be punished for the sins of his ancestors".

Tobirama went silent for a moment. "Fine, brother. I will continue to observe him. But if I find a single hint of treachery, I will personally purge that cursed bloodline. Now, regarding the Nine-Tails... Mito's health is failing, and we have no successor. It is a problem".

"Mito is exhausted," Hashirama sighed. "Suppressing the Fox takes a toll on one's soul. After she passes, I intend to seal the Nine-Tails within the Whirlpool Village for a time. Konoha doesn't need Tailed Beasts to scare our neighbors—we are already more powerful than any beast!".

The two brothers stood in silence, overlooking the village they had built. "Brother," Tobirama asked softly, "after we are gone, how will the world judge us? Will Konoha remain strong?".

"Who knows?" Hashirama laughed. "I only know that the Will of Fire will endure. Wherever leaves fly, fire shall burn. The shadow of the fire will illuminate the village, and new leaves will always bud. Madara gave us the name 'Leaf,' but I have decided that this 'Fire' will be our soul, passed down through the generations".

Hashirama looked up at the sky. Protecting those precious to you, never giving up... loneliness isn't scary, Madara. What's scary is locking yourself inside it.

"Anyway, I have to go find my granddaughter for our daily game," Hashirama said, his mood shifting instantly. "Her luck has been improving lately!".

"Brother, she's only three! You're ruining her!".

"If you're so capable, go have your own children and leave my granddaughter alone, you old bachelor! Hahaha!".

"I'm just busy with work! If I weren't, I'd have dozens of kids!" the fuming Tobirama shouted as he vanished toward the Hokage office.

The sun began to set, bathing the village in a warm, crimson glow. Hashirama watched it, looking entirely content.
