Chapter 10 - Unfinished Masterpiece – Chapter 9: The Proposal

The early morning sun cut across the academy grounds, casting long shadows over the stone pathways. The school seemed calm, but I knew better. Calmness was often the prelude to chaos.

Kenta nudged me as we walked toward the training hall.

"They're up to something," he muttered nervously.

I didn't answer. My green eyes scanned the courtyard, noting movements, small gestures, the way students glanced at each other. Subtle, almost invisible, but unmistakable.

"Even the smallest gestures reveal intentions. Observation is the first weapon."

The Secret Meeting

In the upper floors of the academy, hidden from plain sight, Class C's leader met with Nao Hoshino and Sakura Nishimura.

He leaned casually against a railing, a confident smile on his face.

"Listen carefully," he said, voice low. "Class D has a 'masterpiece' in their ranks. If we want to take the top this semester, we can't ignore it. I need you both to help me bring them down."

Nao's sharp eyes glinted with interest.

"And what's in it for us?" she asked. Her voice calm, almost bored.

Class C's leader smirked.

"Move up to Class B. Better resources, better recognition. You prove your worth, and your status rises. Simple."

Sakura's expression remained unreadable, her quiet eyes analyzing every detail.

"Promises… easy to make, easier to manipulate."

Ambitions Revealed

Nao's lips curled into a faint smile.

"I accept. But remember—if I fail or feel betrayed, I won't hesitate. Not even for you."

Sakura nodded subtly.

"I'll cooperate… but I decide when the rules change."

The leader chuckled.

"Perfect. Together, we'll corner the masterpiece. Class D won't know what hit them."

Meanwhile, I was across the courtyard, unseen. Observing.

"They are weaving a trap… but the shadows see the threads before the puppets do."

Haruto's Observations

Later, during morning drills in Class D, I noted subtle changes:

Nao's focus on Hikari during the exercise was more deliberate.

Sakura had begun quietly observing Class D's coordination.

The Class C leader's expressions, visible even from a distance, hinted at an upcoming coordinated strike.

I leaned back, calm, detached.

"They think they are preparing me. But preparation can be guided… even manipulated."

Casual Interaction, Subtle Strategy

Kenta, oblivious as ever, whispered:

"Do you think they're serious? Class C… with Nao and Sakura?"

I smiled faintly.

"Yes. And I will let them reveal everything themselves. The bigger the show, the easier it is to control."

Haruto internally noted a plan forming:

Let Nao and Sakura act openly, gain trust of Class C

Identify weaknesses of Class C and Class B

Keep Hikari and the rest of Class D unaware of full strategy

"Every ambitious pawn thinks they are the king. Let them believe it… until the strings are pulled."

End of Chapter 9

The bell rang for the next lesson. Students shuffled into classrooms, unaware of the storm gathering behind the shadows.

I walked calmly, Kenta slightly behind me. The chessboard was set. Class C and Class B were ready to strike.

And in the shadows, the "Unfinished Masterpiece" was already several steps ahead.

"Control isn't about fighting the visible. It's about bending the invisible."
