Chapter 2 - Shadows in the forest

Chapter 2: Shadows in the Forest

Xino dragged himself to his feet, his muscles trembling, heart hammering like a drum in his chest. The wolf's retreating howl still echoed in the distance, a chilling reminder that he had narrowly escaped death.

The forest loomed around him like a living nightmare. The trees were colossal, their black trunks twisted with strange patterns, roots coiling above the soil like serpents. Shadows stretched unnaturally, and the wind whispered through the leaves with voices that weren't human.

Xino swallowed hard. His hands still gripped the crude branch he had used to fend off the wolf. The adrenaline had faded, leaving a cold, hollow terror in its place.

He had no idea how far he was from civilization, if any existed at all. Every instinct screamed at him to run—but where could he go? The only choice was forward, deeper into the unknown forest.

As he trudged through the silver grass, his thoughts drifted back to his old life—the only life he had ever known.

He was twenty-three years old. An orphan since he was twelve, after a car accident had taken his parents. The world had been harsh to him, cold, and unforgiving. He'd grown up fending for himself, learning to survive on the scraps of jobs he could find, sleeping wherever he could, always careful never to draw too much attention.

And yet… there were dreams he hadn't abandoned. Dreams of traveling, of living free, of making something of himself. A life beyond the dull routines of his small town. A life where he wasn't just surviving.

But now… all of that seemed impossibly distant. His home. His friends. The narrow streets, the familiar smells of his small apartment. He wanted desperately to go back, to wake up and find this nightmare gone.

The system had done nothing but tell him he was about to die. It hadn't given him tools, weapons, or a map. Just warnings.

He shook his head. "Why me?" he muttered into the darkness. "Why would the universe—or whatever—is doing this… send me here? I don't want this. I want my life back."

He stumbled over a root and nearly fell, catching himself just in time. That's when he noticed the shadows.

They weren't the shadows of trees. They moved differently, slipping between the trunks like black smoke. And somewhere in the dark, he felt eyes watching him. Not the ordinary eyes of an animal… something intelligent.

The system, quiet as ever, suddenly blinked in his vision:

WARNING

IMMEDIATE DANGER APPROACHING

Xino's heart lurched. "How do you know?!" he hissed.

The wind shifted, carrying the metallic scent of blood. Something large moved in the shadows. The branches above snapped.

Instinct took over. He ran.

For hours—or maybe minutes, he couldn't tell—the forest seemed endless. Every step was a struggle through uneven ground, thorny vines scraping his arms, roots threatening to trip him. His lungs burned, and his mind screamed to stop, but he couldn't.

Eventually, he found a shallow cave. Its entrance was hidden behind a curtain of moss. He ducked inside, pressing his back to the cold stone wall.

He was bleeding from a scratch on his arm. His clothes were torn. His hands were raw from clutching the branch.

He exhaled shakily. "I… I can't die here."

He didn't cry. He hadn't cried in years. But the darkness around him seemed to press against his chest like an invisible weight, suffocating and cold.

He thought about his parents. About the life he had lost. About the life he wanted back. That thought alone steeled his resolve.

If he survived this… he would find a way home. No matter what it took.

The shadows in the forest shifted again. And somewhere, beyond the reach of the moonlight, he heard the faintest whisper:

"Run, human… or die."

That's all he heard before he passed out from all the terror and exhaustion that plagued him
