Chapter 1 - Chapter — The Midnight Voice

The radio station always felt different at night.

During the day, Port City Radio was full of life. Reporters rushed through the hallways with recorders in hand, producers argued over program schedules, and phones rang endlessly as callers tried to get on air.

But after midnight, the building changed.

The noise disappeared.

The bright lights dimmed.

And the long hallways felt almost abandoned.

Amara Hart preferred it that way.

She sat alone in the control room, gently adjusting the sound levels on the mixing console in front of her. The soft glow from the monitors reflected on the glass window separating her from the empty broadcast studio.

Outside the building, the city of Port Harcourt was still alive. Traffic hummed in the distance, and the occasional car horn drifted through the night air.

But inside the station, it was quiet.

Peaceful.

Amara glanced up at the large digital clock hanging on the wall.

11:47 p.m.

The midnight program would begin in thirteen minutes.

She checked the broadcast schedule again on her tablet.

MIDNIGHT ECHOES — HOST: JULIAN COLE

The name still felt unfamiliar.

The station manager had introduced the new host only two weeks ago, yet his show had already become one of the most talked-about programs on the station.

Listeners loved him.

Or rather… they loved his voice.

It was deep.

Calm.

Almost hypnotic.

Even Amara had to admit she enjoyed listening to him speak.

Still, something about him felt strange.

For starters, no one seemed to know much about him.

He only worked the midnight shift.

He never stayed after the broadcast ended.

And somehow… he always arrived without anyone seeing him enter the building.

Amara frowned slightly and looked toward the hallway security monitor.

The screen showed the quiet entrance corridor.

Empty.

Again.

She tapped her pen against the desk.

"He's late," she murmured to herself.

Julian Cole had a habit of arriving just before the show started, but tonight the studio was still empty.

Amara sighed and leaned back in her chair.

If he didn't show up soon, she would have to delay the broadcast.

The last thing she wanted was another complaint from management.

Suddenly—

The studio door opened.

Amara blinked in surprise.

She quickly looked back at the hallway monitor.

Still empty.

Her eyebrows slowly pulled together.

That was impossible.

She had been watching the hallway the whole time.

No one had walked in.

Yet now, sitting calmly behind the microphone in Studio B, was Julian Cole.

He adjusted the microphone stand with practiced ease before settling into the chair like he had been there all along.

Amara leaned closer to the glass window.

From this distance, she could finally study him properly.

He was tall, with dark hair and sharp features that made him look slightly older than she had imagined from his voice.

But what caught her attention the most were his eyes.

They seemed unusually focused.

Observant.

He noticed everything happening around him.

Julian reached forward and pressed a button on the console.

The red ON AIR light above the studio door glowed brightly.

The broadcast had begun.

Amara quickly put on her headphones.

Julian leaned toward the microphone.

For a moment he said nothing.

Then his voice filled the studio.

"Good evening, night listeners."

Even through the headphones, the sound of his voice sent a small chill through Amara's spine.

"You're listening to Midnight Echoes, the place where secrets meet the silence of the night."

Amara automatically adjusted the sound levels, but her attention remained fixed on the man in the studio.

Julian continued speaking.

"Tonight, we talk about the stories people carry inside them… the ones they never tell anyone."

The phone lines immediately began to flash.

Callers were already trying to join the show.

Amara shook her head slightly in disbelief.

Two weeks.

That was all it had taken for Julian Cole to build a following.

Listeners seemed drawn to him in a way she had never seen before.

As the first call connected, Julian suddenly looked up.

His gaze moved past the microphone.

Past the studio lights.

Straight through the glass window.

Directly at Amara.

Their eyes met for only a second.

But it was enough to make her feel strangely uneasy.

Julian smiled slightly before returning his attention to the broadcast.

For some reason…

Amara couldn't shake the feeling that he had been looking for her specifically.
