The black mercenary leaped, and the dragon-hunting ballista he had just operated exploded in golden-red flames, sending burning splinters of wood flying, harming many unarmored soldiers.
Dense arrows flew into the sky, mixed with spears and large crossbow bolts, but these could not harm an adult dragon. They couldn't even harm the dragon's wing membranes; those seemingly fragile membranes were actually incredibly tough, especially as the years passed, the wing membranes of old dragons were difficult for mortals to harm, except for their own kind.
The black mercenary scrambled to escape the range of Dreamfyre's dragonflame, but Dreamfyre's dragonflame seemed endless. The spears fired from the ballistas behind collided with the old dragon high above, only to fall apart after leaving an almost imperceptible mark. The seemingly endless dragonflame spread along the way, engulfing the screaming black mercenary.
The soldiers in the phalanx panicked.
What's going on? Didn't they say the enemy was coming from the front? Didn't they say our ballistas and arrows could withstand dragons? What the hell is this!
But from the moment two dragons swooped down from the sky one after another, to the two seemingly endless dragonflames passing through the gaps between the three phalanxes, it was but a brief instant.
The dragon-hunting ballistas provided by Salice were almost completely destroyed; one dragon-hunting ballista was still futilely firing its last spear.
It did hit.
It hit the spot where Dreamfyre's neck connected to her wing, causing the old dragon to tilt her head slightly. The huge spear embedded itself in the old dragon's hard scales, but caused no damage, though it did make the old dragon angry for the first time in a long while.
Even Daeron understood the meaning in Dreamfyre's roar.
"How dare you…how dare you…burn…burn!"
The old dragon no longer controlled her dragonflame; the red-gold dragonflame suddenly expanded again, becoming several times thicker than the previous pillar of fire. The thick pillar of fire made a turn and rushed straight into the phalanx formed by the Golden Hammers.
Sendroth suddenly stopped his dragonflame. But he wasn't sparing the enemy.
Instead, he was making way for the third dragon to descend.
Blue-gray flames spread from the rear, plowing through the middle of the large phalanx bringing up the rear. The people in the flames screamed, trying to escape the range covered by the dragonflame, but could only watch helplessly as their bodies disintegrated into ash in the flames.
The scorching dragonflame spread from the rear all the way to the front phalanx, colliding with Dreamfyre's dragonflame with a roar, shattering the phalanx of the Golden Hammers in the middle.
There were flames everywhere. The warhorses had long been driven mad by the smell of the dragons; some threw off their riders, letting them be trampled by the stampeding horses and burned to ashes, while others were directly burned into unrecognizable lumps of charcoal by the flames.
The elephants were the same. Robert's war elephants collapsed to the ground the moment the dragons appeared. More distant elephants scattered in a frenzy, trampling through their own phalanxes. One war elephant even charged directly at Robert's mount; his war elephant tried to counterattack with its steel-tipped tusks, but for some unknown reason, it couldn't turn as nimbly as before, only allowing the war elephant that charged into the sea of fire to trample over its lower body and gallop away.
In almost an instant, Robert's army was completely engulfed by flames. In the smoke, all the phalanxes collapsed; there were warriors covered in flames everywhere. Warriors in heavy armor couldn't escape; the heavy armor that should have protected them now became their purgatory. The iron armor, glowing red-hot from the high temperature, made its owner let out inhuman screams, and melted gold flowed like a spring over the glowing armor.
The knights of the Iron Throne moved.
Two torrents of steel slowly moved from the high ground, and loud horn calls echoed across the open plains.
Robert tried to say something in horror, but his gorget, glowing red from the high temperature, prevented him from speaking. Sendroth, like a cat toying with a mouse, pursued the terrified, scattering elephants. He personally witnessed the dark green dragon smash a war elephant's head to pieces with a tail swipe, and saw the dragon effortlessly pick up a war elephant and hurl it into the sky.
Then, a sickly green dragonflame swept over, and the elephant's mournful cry ceased abruptly as an irregular piece of charcoal hit the ground.
At the same time, it took away the screaming people caught in the self-trampling and dragonflame.
Now, that dark green demon dragon set his sights on him and his war elephant.
"Quick, make the war elephant get up, quick!" Robert tore off his gorget and roared, grabbing the elephant handler's thin clothes, "Otherwise, we'll all die!"
"Commander, it's not that I don't want to," the elephant handler raised his whip, on the verge of tears, "The elephant won't listen, I've tried everything but I can't control it."
"Useless!" Robert pushed the elephant handler off the elephant, snatched the long whip, and lashed the war elephant fiercely. "Move! Move!" But the war elephant only answered him with mournful cries.
It was only then that Robert discovered his war elephant's leg was broken. The silk elephant cloth was burning in the flames, and the elephant's desire to escape like its companions had become a luxury.
Then he saw the last scene of his life.
Sendroth suddenly descended, his huge dragon claws growing larger and larger in Robert's terrified eyes.
"Mercy! Mercy! Spare me—"
Before Robert's voice could fall, Sendroth's massive dragon claw grabbed the man in the reeking golden armor, just as a person would grab an ant.
Robert only felt his internal organs tremble the moment the rough dragon claw gripped him, and his breath seemed to be choked by something. He could even hear the sound of his bones cracking.
Sendroth flew straight up into the sky, loosened his grip, dipped his head, and swooped down. A small mouthful of sickly green dragonflame enveloped Robert, and then he opened his mouth, took that sickly green dragonflame into his mouth, and chewed vigorously.
"Sendroth, spit it out, it's dirty!" Dan clung tightly to the dragon saddle and shouted in High Valyrian. Sendroth, with some disdain, spat out the contents of his mouth, letting it fall onto the war elephant that was already ignited by the flames.
As if finding the war elephant's wails too unpleasant, Sendroth did not forget to breathe out a mouthful of dragonflame to put the war elephant out of its misery before taking flight again.
The Iron Throne's cavalry finally reached the battlefield. They looked at the enemy formation, already torn apart by dragonflame. All the cavalry simultaneously lowered their warhorses' blindfolds and ear covers; living with dragons day in and day out had made their warhorses less afraid of the dragons' scent.
The knights of the Iron Throne launched the most successful charge of their lives.
Lances plunged into burning figures, swords cut off the heads of those fleeing in all directions, and warhorses trampled over shattered crowds.
And a ground covered in melted gold.
