Chapter 1 - The Bug

Chapter 1: The Bug

The rain had been falling for hours over the neon-lit city.

Inside a small, cluttered apartment on the tenth floor of a run-down building, Kai Hunter sat completely still, wearing a sleek black VR headset.

His body didn't move.

But inside the virtual world…

Everything was chaos.

Lightning flashed across a crimson sky as explosions of magic shook the battlefield. Dozens of armored warriors and spellcasters lay defeated across the ruins of an ancient temple.

At the center of the battlefield stood a massive creature nearly fifteen feet tall.

The Abyssal Tyrant.

A boss monster that had terrorized players in Eternal Dominion for months.

And in front of it stood one final player.

Kai.

His avatar, clad in dark armor with a long black cloak flowing behind him, held a glowing dagger coated in shadow energy.

His health bar blinked dangerously low.

2%.

One mistake and everything would end.

Kai's fingers moved rapidly across the control panel beside his chair in the real world.

In the game, his character dashed sideways, narrowly avoiding a massive claw strike that shattered the stone floor.

"Too slow," Kai muttered calmly.

He had spent three months preparing for this fight.

Studying patterns.

Analyzing weaknesses.

The monster roared and slammed both fists into the ground.

A shockwave exploded outward.

Kai's character leaped backward at the exact moment the attack landed.

The ground where he had stood cracked open.

"Now," Kai whispered.

His avatar disappeared into the shadows.

A special skill activated.

Shadow Step.

Instantly, he appeared behind the monster.

The Abyssal Tyrant turned too late.

Kai's dagger flashed.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

The final strike landed directly in the monster's glowing core.

The screen erupted with light.

The monster froze.

Then shattered into thousands of particles.

A loud system chime echoed.

BOSS DEFEATED

Player: KaiHunter

Level Achieved: 100

New Title Earned: First Ascendant

Kai exhaled slowly.

"Finally."

For the first time in weeks, he leaned back in his chair.

Level 100.

No one else had done it yet.

Eternal Dominion was the most advanced virtual reality game ever created.

Released only six months ago, it had already taken over the world.

Millions of players logged in daily.

But Kai wasn't playing for fun.

For him, the game was an escape.

Reality had never been kind to him.

Bills piled up on his desk.

His refrigerator was nearly empty.

And the scholarship he depended on for university had recently been suspended.

Gaming was the only place where he felt in control.

And tonight, he had done something no one else had.

He had reached the maximum level.

Kai removed the VR headset.

The apartment lights flickered slightly as his eyes adjusted to reality.

Outside the window, rain continued to pour over the city skyline.

He stretched his arms and stood up.

His muscles felt stiff from sitting for so long.

"Time to sleep," he muttered.

But before he could take a step—

A glowing blue screen suddenly appeared in front of him.

Floating in midair.

Kai froze.

The exact same interface from the game hovered before his eyes.

SYSTEM ACTIVATED

Player: Kai Hunter

Level: 100

Class: Shadow Hunter

Kai blinked.

The screen didn't disappear.

"…What?"

He waved his hand through it.

His fingers passed through the glowing text like mist.

But the screen remained.

"That's impossible," he whispered.

Game interfaces didn't follow players into real life.

VR technology wasn't that advanced.

He reached for his headset.

Maybe it hadn't fully shut down.

But before he could grab it—

The system chimed again.

New Skill Unlocked

Shadow Detection (Passive)

You can now sense hidden enemies within a 10-meter radius.

Kai's heart began to race.

Enemies?

"What enemies?"

Then he heard it.

A scratching sound.

Very faint.

From the window.

He slowly turned his head.

The rain had intensified outside, droplets sliding down the glass like rivers.

For a moment, everything looked normal.

Then something slammed against the window.

CRASH!

Glass exploded inward.

Kai jumped back instinctively as shards scattered across the floor.

A creature crawled through the broken frame.

Six legs.

A body the size of a large dog.

Its skin was black and glossy like armor.

But the worst part was its eyes.

Bright red.

Glowing.

Kai's mind struggled to process what he was seeing.

"...What the hell is that?"

The creature hissed.

A deep, guttural sound that vibrated in the air.

And above its head—

Words appeared.

Dungeon Spider – Level 12

Kai stared in disbelief.

That was a monster name.

From the game.

"No way," he whispered.

This had to be a hallucination.

He hadn't slept properly in days.

Maybe the long gaming session had messed with his brain.

But the spider didn't disappear.

Instead, it crawled forward slowly, its legs clicking against the floor.

Its red eyes locked onto him.

Then the system chimed again.

QUEST RECEIVED

Eliminate the hostile creature.

Reward: 500 EXP

Penalty for failure: Death

Kai's pulse spiked.

"Death?"

The spider lunged.

Kai barely reacted in time, jumping sideways as the creature slammed into the wall behind him.

The impact cracked the plaster.

His breathing became uneven.

That was real.

Too real.

The spider turned toward him again.

Its mandibles opened, dripping with something dark.

Kai looked around the apartment desperately.

There was nothing he could use as a weapon.

Then suddenly—

Another notification appeared.

Skill Available

Shadow Blade

Without thinking, Kai focused on the skill.

A strange warmth flowed through his arm.

Dark energy gathered in his hand.

And then—

A blade made entirely of black shadows formed in his grip.

Kai stared at it.

His voice trembled slightly.

"…You've got to be kidding me."

The spider attacked again.

This time, Kai didn't run.

Instinct took over.

He swung the blade.

The shadow weapon sliced cleanly through one of the creature's legs.

Black liquid splattered across the floor.

The spider shrieked.

Kai's mind raced.

This is exactly like the game.

The monster recovered quickly and charged again.

Kai stepped sideways, remembering the combat patterns he had practiced for months.

Another swing.

Another leg fell.

The creature slowed.

"Okay," Kai breathed.

"I can do this."

The spider jumped toward him.

Kai raised the blade and drove it forward.

The shadow weapon pierced directly into the creature's head.

For a moment, everything went silent.

Then the monster's body began to dissolve into black particles.

Just like in the game.

The pieces faded into the air.

Leaving nothing behind.

A system chime echoed again.

Enemy Eliminated

EXP Gained: 500

Level Up!

Kai stood frozen in the middle of his apartment.

His chest rose and fell rapidly.

The glowing screen floated calmly in front of him.

Player: Kai Hunter

Level: 101

Rain continued to fall outside the shattered window.

Cold wind rushed into the room.

Kai slowly looked down at the shadow blade still in his hand.

Then he looked back at the floating system interface.

His voice was barely a whisper.

"…Reality became a game."

But something else bothered him.

The spider had been Level 12.

Which meant—

There were probably more.

Somewhere in the city, sirens began to echo faintly in the distance.

Kai stared into the rainy night through the broken window.

And deep inside, a realization began to form.

If monsters were appearing in the real world…

Then the world itself might already be changing.

And he was the only one who knew how to play the game.
