Chapter 6 - PLAYING HUSBAND

ADRIAN'S POV

The guards came out of nowhere.

One second Adrian was holding Lily's chin up and promising revenge, the next second steel was crashing through the forest clearing. A dozen guards burst from the trees with swords drawn and determination etched into their faces.

Adrian didn't hesitate.

He stepped in front of Lily without being asked and moved faster than human eyes could track. The first guard who tried to grab her ended up on his back gasping for air with no memory of how he got there.

The second guard swung a sword. Adrian caught the blade with one hand and bent it out of shape like it was made of paper.

The third guard hit the ground before he could even process what was happening.

The captain of the guard drew his sword and actually tried to look brave about it. Adrian almost respected that. Almost.

Adrian disarmed him in a single motion. The sword went flying across the clearing and the captain stumbled backward, looking at his empty hands like they'd betrayed him.

"Stand down," the captain ordered his remaining guards, his voice shaking slightly. "Don't engage."

Adrian could have killed them all. Should have killed them all if he was being the demon he was supposed to be. But Lily's hand grabbed his arm and he realized she was thinking faster than he was.

Smart girl.

"Wait," Lily called out, stepping forward to stand beside Adrian instead of behind him.

Everyone froze.

Adrian watched the guards' expressions shift from terror to confusion. They'd been expecting a victim. What they were seeing was a girl standing next to a clearly inhuman creature and looking completely in control.

Lily's mind was working. Adrian could see it in the way her eyes moved. The way she was calculating. The captain said something about arrest. About crimes. About bringing Lily back to face execution.

Lily opened her mouth and lied like she'd been doing it her whole life.

"I'm married," she announced clearly. "To a noble from the shadow territories. We married in secret months ago. That's why Prince Daniel rejected me. He discovered my marriage and it was a political disaster for the royal family."

Adrian caught on immediately. Brilliant lie. It explained everything. It gave context. It made her marriage to him not just plausible but logical.

He wrapped his arm around Lily's waist and pulled her close. His shadows swirled around them both like they had a life of their own.

"My wife is correct," Adrian said smoothly. His voice was darker now. More controlled. More dangerous in the way that made nobles understand they were dealing with something outside their experience. "We married in secret. And now I'm here to clear her name and protect what's mine."

The captain's face had gone pale. He looked at Adrian's eyes glowing amber in the darkness. Looked at the shadows moving independently. Looked at Lily standing beside him like she belonged there.

"Your Majesty will want to know about this," the captain said weakly.

"My wife and I welcome the opportunity to meet with your Queen," Adrian replied. "I'm sure we can clear up this unfortunate misunderstanding. Lily never stole anything. She was framed. And I have the power to prove it."

The guards retreated. They didn't move fast but they moved. The captain took one last look at Adrian and Lily, realized he was completely outmatched, and signaled his men to withdraw.

When they were finally gone, Adrian turned to look at Lily with genuine amusement in his expression.

She was breathing hard but her eyes were sharp. Calculating.

"That was impressive," Adrian said. "You lied perfectly. You understood the situation and created a story that makes sense to them."

"We needed them to leave," Lily said simply. "Fighting them would have made everything worse. But if we're married, if you're important, then they have to report to the Queen instead of just executing me."

Adrian pulled her closer and his shadows wrapped around them both like a blanket.

"You're thinking like a strategist already," he murmured. "Not like a victim seeking revenge but like someone actually planning to win."

"Is that a compliment?" Lily asked.

"Yes," Adrian said simply.

Then he lifted her into his arms before she could respond. She gasped and wrapped her arms around his neck instinctively. Adrian's shadows swallowed them both completely and the forest dissolved.

When the darkness cleared, they were standing in a small cottage at the edge of the forest. Lily looked around in shock.

"Where are we?" she breathed.

Adrian set her down gently and shadows faded from around them.

"Somewhere safe," he said. "Our base of operations. Tomorrow we plan how to destroy them properly. But tonight, you need rest."

He watched Lily look around the tiny space and realize there was only one bed.

And Adrian felt something shift inside him that he couldn't quite name but definitely shouldn't be feeling.
