Chapter 9 - THE WEIGHT OF KNOWLEDGE

KAI:

Two days until the banquet.

Kai moves through them like a ghost, going through motions while his mind spirals. The conspiracy. The trap. The fact that Elena discovered something so dangerous she had to disappear.

Sophie finds him in the library, studying maps of Sun Crest's borders.

"You look like you have not slept in days," Sophie observes, sitting beside him.

"I have not," Kai admits. "There is too much I do not know. Too much that could destroy everything."

Sophie pulls one of the maps toward her.

"Tell me what you are afraid of," she says.

Kai considers lying. Then decides the truth is simpler.

"My sister discovered that Liam is part of a conspiracy," Kai says quietly. "She did not tell me what kind. She just ran. And now I am married to someone who admits he is complicit in whatever scared her away."

Sophie nods slowly, like she has been waiting for this conversation.

"Do you want to know what I think the conspiracy is?" Sophie asks.

"Yes," Kai says. "But I suspect you are going to tell me whether I want to hear it or not."

Sophie smiles despite the darkness of the topic.

"Lord Marcus Grey knows Liam's secret," Sophie says bluntly. "I do not know how he found out or when. But I am almost certain he knows. And I think he has been using that knowledge to control my cousin for years."

Kai's hands clench into fists.

"How long?" he asks.

"Years," Sophie repeats. "Liam was sixteen when I think Marcus discovered the truth. That would give him over a decade of leverage."

"And the conspiracy?"

"I think Marcus has been planning something," Sophie says. "Some kind of political maneuver that requires both kingdoms to be unstable. I think your sister's marriage was supposed to be part of that plan. I think she was supposed to help destabilize Frost Vale while Marcus used Liam's secret to destabilize Sun Crest."

"And when everything falls apart?"

"Marcus seizes power," Sophie finishes. "He becomes the strong hand that saves both kingdoms from chaos. He becomes indispensable."

Kai wants to scream.

"Why did you not tell me this before?" he demands.

"Because I was not sure," Sophie says. "And because Liam needed to tell you himself. He needed to admit what he had done and what he was part of. He needed to give you the choice to trust him despite all of it."

"And did he?" Kai asks bitterly. "Did he explain his complicity?"

"He told you he was part of the conspiracy," Sophie says. "He did not explain his role because he probably does not have a clear role. Marcus has been controlling him through fear. Liam does not have a choice. He never had a choice."

Kai stands and walks to the window. Outside, the palace is beautiful and terrible and full of secrets that are eating everyone alive.

"The banquet is in two days," Kai says. "That is when Victoria will attack. That is when Marcus will make a move. That is when everything falls apart."

"Probably," Sophie agrees. "But not necessarily."

"What do you mean?"

Sophie stands and joins him at the window.

"I mean that sometimes when everything falls apart, something better gets built in its place," Sophie says. "And I mean that Liam has never had anyone stand beside him through the falling apart. He has always been alone. You might be the first person who could stand with him and not ask him to be something he is not."

"I am just as much a liar as he is," Kai says.

"Yes," Sophie agrees. "But you are a liar with integrity. There is a difference."

She touches his arm gently.

"The banquet is a test," Sophie continues. "It is a test of whether you can be Elena convincingly enough. Whether you can survive Victoria's attacks. Whether you can appear strong without seeming threatening. But more importantly, it is a test of whether you and Liam can actually work together, or whether you are just two broken people pretending to be fine."

"And if we fail the test?" Kai asks.

"Then the conspiracy wins and everything goes dark," Sophie says. "But if you pass, if you manage to survive the night and actually protect each other, then maybe there is a chance that the two of you can take down whatever Marcus is planning."

"You believe that?" Kai asks.

"I believe in hope," Sophie says. "And I believe that sometimes the most unlikely alliances are the strongest ones."

She leaves Kai alone with his thoughts.

That night, Liam appears in the sitting room where Kai is reading.

"Tomorrow you meet the nobility," Liam says without preamble. "Tomorrow the real tests begin."

"I know," Kai responds.

"I will be beside you," Liam says. "Whatever happens, I will not let you face it alone."

Kai looks up from his book.

"Why?" he asks. "After everything you have admitted, why would you choose to stand with me?"

Liam sits across from him.

"Because Sophie is right," Liam says quietly. "Because I have spent my entire life alone and it is exhausting. Because you are the first person who has seen me and not used it as a weapon. Because maybe, if we survive this, there is something better waiting on the other side."

"And if we do not survive?" Kai asks.

"Then at least I will not die alone," Liam says.

He stands and extends his hand.

"Tomorrow we dance," Liam says. "Tomorrow we pretend to be in love. Tomorrow we show everyone that the Princess of Frost Vale and the Crown Prince of Sun Crest are building something real."

Kai takes his hand.

"And tonight?" Kai asks.

"Tonight we sleep," Liam says. "Because tomorrow, everything changes."

Kai watches Liam retreat to his bedroom.

Tomorrow is the banquet. Tomorrow is where Victoria strikes. Tomorrow is where the conspiracy makes its move.

And tomorrow, Kai and Liam will have to survive together or fall apart separately.

There is no third option.

There is only the choice between building something together or watching everything burn.
