Chapter 189: Before the Hunger — The Lord of Mercy (Part XXII: The Weaver of Shadows)
"Darkness does not always destroy the light. Sometimes... it simply teaches people to stop looking for it."
The Lost Pages of the First Chronicle
The Story Vault spread far beyond Rivershade.Travelers carried copies of its stories across the continent.
Merchants recited them around campfires.
Parents told them before their children slept.
Minstrels wove them into songs.
For a time...The world began to remember again. The Hall of Names was no longer a place of grief alone. It had become a place where memories lived. The silver light of the Star of Mercy grew stronger.
But deep beneath the world...The ancient presence did not panic. It adapted.
A New Player. In the chamber of the Seven Crystals, another pillar stirred.
It was not the Crystal of Mercy.
It was the Crystal of Wisdom.
Hairline cracks of crimson spread through its silver core.
From the darkness emerged a figure unlike the Crimson Pilgrim.Tall.Graceful.
Wrapped in robes that seemed woven from moving shadows and fragments of written words. Its face was hidden behind a smooth porcelain mask with no features except a single vertical crack. It bowed before the unseen ancient presence.
"You have called."
Its voice was calm and melodic.
"You are the Weaver."
The ancient voice replied.
"Mercy remembers."
"So we shall not attack the heart."
The masked figure remained silent.
"We shall cloud the mind."
The First Forgotten Truth
Across the continent, strange changes began.Scholars opened books they had studied all their lives...Only to find entire passages meaningless.
Ancient maps no longer matched the land.
Engineers argued over bridges that had stood for centuries because no one remembered who had designed them.
The knowledge still existed.
But its connections.Its understanding...
Were beginning to unravel. The Eshkarai Realized.Deep within the Living Library, panic spread.Books rewrote themselves.
Margins filled with warnings.
Entire chapters rearranged overnight.
The youngest apprentice rushed to the oldest Keeper."The library is changing!"
The Keeper nodded grimly.
"It isn't the library."
"It's history."
She placed a hand against the breathing wall.
"It is trying to preserve what the world is forgetting."For the first time in centuries...The Living Library locked its own doors.
Astraeus Explains
Astraeus returned to Rivershade.
Myra met him beneath the willow.
"There is another."
He said quietly.
She understood immediately.
"Another star."
He nodded.
"The virtue of Wisdom is being tested."
She frowned.
"I thought this was about corruption."
"It is."
"But corruption rarely attacks strength."
"It attacks understanding."
He picked up a fallen leaf.
"If people forget why compassion matters"
"Mercy dies."
He let the leaf drift away.
"If people forget how truth is found"
"Wisdom dies."
Eamon's Lesson
That evening, Eamon gathered the children of Rivershade.
Instead of telling them a story...
He asked them to solve a simple riddle.
Every child answered differently.
Some were right.
Some were wonderfully wrong.
When they finished laughing, one little girl asked,"Which answer was correct?"
Eamon smiled.
"The one you can explain."
Myra watched silently.
She finally understood.
Wisdom was not knowing every answer.
It was seeking truth with honesty.
The Weaver Watches
Far away, within the abandoned ruins of an ancient academy, the masked Weaver walked through rows of collapsed stone shelves. It touched a crumbling book.
The pages dissolved into black dust.
"Stories"The Weaver whispered.
"They preserve memory."
It looked toward the horizon.
"But certainty"
"is far easier to erase."
It lifted one hand.Thousands of tiny shadows scattered into the wind like ash.Invisible.Silent.
Carried toward every kingdom.
The First Debate
Days later, the Council Hall in Asterion's Crossing hosted another gathering.
This time...No one could agree.
Simple facts became endless arguments.
Old allies distrusted one another.
Scholars accused scholars.
Kings questioned maps their own ancestors had drawn.
Nothing had changed.
Yet everyone doubted everything.
Myra watched in growing concern.
"This isn't ignorance."
She whispered.
Astraeus nodded.
"No."
"It is confusion."
"And confusion is the first step toward despair."
Deep beneath the world...The Crystal of Wisdom pulsed once.
A single crimson crack spread across its surface.Beside it, the Crystal of Mercy flickered with both silver and crimson light.
The unseen ancient presence spoke.
"The first remembered."
"The second questions."
The Weaver bowed.
"They will soon ask"
"whether truth ever existed at all."
The chamber grew silent.
Above...The night sky shimmered.
The Star of Mercy still fought against the darkness. But beside it...Another star had begun to dim.The Age of Testing was no longer focused on one soul. One by one...The Seven Virtues were being challenged.
And somewhere, beyond even Astraeus' knowledge...Six ordinary people lived their lives, unaware that the fate of the world rested quietly within their hearts.
