Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Unexpected Interview

The rain poured relentlessly over the city streets, drumming against Zara's umbrella as she ran to keep up with the stream of commuters. Her shoes were soaked, her bag slipping from her shoulder, but she didn't care. This was her chance—the only one she had to change her life.

Her father's passing had left her family struggling, and her mother's quiet sacrifices weighed heavily on her heart every single day. Getting this job at Alexander Cole's company could mean school fees paid on time, bills covered, and maybe, just maybe, a little breathing room for her family.

The office tower loomed above her, its glass exterior glinting even in the gray storm. With a deep breath, Zara pushed open the revolving doors and stepped inside. The warm air and the soft hum of activity made her forget the rain for a moment—but only briefly.

A sleek, marble-floored lobby stretched out before her, and a receptionist with perfectly styled hair and an expression that could stop a heart looked up as Zara approached.

"Miss Zara Williams?" she asked.

"Yes… that's me," Zara said, trying to keep her voice steady.

"You're expected on the top floor. The CEO wishes to see you personally."

Zara's stomach flipped. The CEO? She had applied like any ordinary candidate. She hadn't expected a personal interview, let alone with a man rumored to be the most powerful billionaire in the city.

The elevator ride was silent except for the soft hum of the machinery, but Zara's mind raced with questions. What would he be like? Stern and cold, she assumed. Intimidating? Absolutely.

When the doors opened, she stepped out into a spacious office with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the entire city. A man stood near the window, tall, impeccably dressed, with dark hair that fell perfectly into place. He didn't turn to look at her at first.

"You're late," a calm, low voice said.

Zara's mouth went dry. "I… I'm sorry, sir. The rain—"

He finally turned. His eyes were sharp, calculating, and Zara's heart skipped a beat. She froze, a strange recognition fluttering inside her chest. Something about him seemed… familiar. But it couldn't be. Not him.

"I hope you're not here expecting this to be an ordinary interview," he said, his lips curling slightly into a smirk that was equal parts charm and warning.

"I… I just… I need this job, sir," Zara stammered, trying to keep her composure.

He studied her silently, and for a moment, Zara felt as if he could see through every lie, every fear, every hope she carried. Then he spoke, a hint of something unreadable in his tone:

"Good. Because this isn't just a job interview. What I need from you… is something far more complicated. And far more dangerous."

Zara's heart raced. Dangerous? She wasn't sure whether she wanted to stay… or run.

But before she could say anything, the man walked toward his desk and leaned casually against it. "And one more thing," he said softly, almost as if he were letting her in on a secret only she could feel.

Zara looked up, meeting his gaze. Something about his eyes made her shiver. She didn't yet know what he was hiding, but she knew, somehow, that her life was about to change forever.
