Chapter 5 - 5

Chapter 5 Inviting NamiIgnoring the villagers' jubilation, Luffy released his foot, leaving Arlong slumped there like a dead dog, and strode towards the third floor of the main building.

His footsteps echoed through the empty, dilapidated building.

Finally, Luffy stopped before the familiar door, which was tightly shut.

Luffy didn't knock immediately. Instead, he stood quietly for a few seconds, adjusting his breathing and expression.

The cold indifference on his face receded like a receding tide, replaced by a measured recklessness.

The cold calculation in his eyes was concealed, replaced by a calm acceptance of fulfilling a promise.

Then, Luffy raised his hand and knocked.

Knock, knock, knock.

There was deathly silence inside, but Luffy could sense that the person behind the door was breathing rapidly, like a bellows, their heart pounding as if it would burst from their chest.

Several seconds later, the door was slowly pulled open a crack.

Nami's pale face appeared behind the door, her orange hair slightly disheveled, her large eyes bloodshot, her expression incredibly complex—

There was ecstasy, shock, relief, and tears, but deeper still, a deep wariness and a trace of bewilderment.

Nami gripped a simple wooden stick tightly in her hand, her knuckles white.

The two stared at each other through the crack in the door.

Luffy smiled first, not the calculating smile he harbored, but more like the "original Luffy" he remembered—a slightly silly smile.

"Yo! That great white shark, its teeth aren't very strong!"

Luffy greeted her, his tone light.

Nami's lips trembled, and tears welled up unexpectedly, streaming down her dirty cheeks.

Eight years of pent-up resentment and despair finally overflowed in that moment.

Nami bit her lip tightly, refusing to cry out. She simply stared intently at Luffy with her large, teary eyes, as if trying to confirm that this wasn't a dream.

"Who...who are you?" Nami's voice was terribly hoarse, thick with a nasal tone.

"Monkey D. Luffy!" Luffy announced his name.

Then he added, deliberately adding a touch of youthful arrogance: "I'm going to be the Pirate King."

The Pirate King...the word made Nami's pupils shrink, an instinctive resistance rising within her.

But the person before her had just crushed the nightmare that had controlled her for eight years.

The overwhelming power and the unease that came with being a pirate clashed fiercely within Nami.

"Why...why?"

Nami's voice lowered, filled with probing and deep unease.

"Why did you help us? What do you want?"

Luffy's smile faded slightly, becoming somewhat serious.

He peered through the crack in the door at Nami's wary eyes, knowing that any feigned warmth at this moment would likely backfire.

Dealing with someone who had struggled with deception for eight years, honesty and strength were perhaps more effective than hypocrisy.

Luffy spoke directly, his gaze (pretended) meeting Nami's eyes: "I need a navigator, the best navigator, and I've heard you are!"

Nami's heart skipped a beat.

Luffy tilted his head, gesturing towards the ruins below: "As for why I helped you... the fish-men blocked my way, that's all. Saving you will allow me to get the navigator I need."

A very pragmatic reason.

It was almost like turning a rescue into a transaction with a price tag.

There was no hypocritical justice, no sentimental sympathy, only the naked reality of my need!

To Luffy's surprise, upon hearing this answer, the deep wariness in Nami's eyes softened slightly.

Yes, what kindness in this world comes without a reason?

A clear transaction felt more real to her than an empty promise.

At least, she knew what the other party wanted.

"What if... what if I refuse?" Nami asked with difficulty, even though she knew the question was foolish.

The other party possessed the power to instantly destroy the Arlong Pirates; she dared not imagine the consequences of refusing.

Luffy paused deliberately, then slowly said, "I won't force you."

Luffy spoke slowly, with a strange persuasiveness:

"But I defeated Arlong and liberated this village. That debt of gratitude is a fact, and my ship needs a navigator.

You possess top-tier talent, yet you're trapped here drawing those sea charts that will never earn you a hundred million Berries."

With each sentence Luffy spoke, Nami's face paled. He knew her situation perfectly well!

"Follow me, and you'll see a wider ocean, and draw a true world map."

Luffy threw out the most tempting bait.

"Your dream, if you steal here on your own, might take a lifetime, even several lifetimes, to achieve. But I can take you anywhere you want to go."

"The Grand Line, the New World, all the seas..."

A dream! To draw a world map! This word struck Nami like lightning.

It was her promise to Bellemere, the most fervent desire deep within her soul, the glimmer of light that sustained her through countless desperate nights.

Luffy pressed on, his tone steady yet powerful: "I will ensure this village returns to peace, the remnants of Arlong will be wiped out, and other pirates will dare not harass us again."

Saving the village, providing a shortcut to her dreams, and guaranteeing her future safety.

These three irresistible conditions, layer upon layer, crashed down on Nami's already overburdened heart.

Tears blurred her vision again, but this time it wasn't a pure collapse.

Hope, like a sprouting blade of grass in a crack in the rock, grew wildly.

Nami looked at Luffy, this boy in the straw hat who didn't look much older than her. His eyes were calm, devoid of condescending pity or aggressive desire, only a frankness as if stating a fact.

Perhaps she could trust him this once? For the village, and for… her own dream?

41 points.

Luffy calmly assessed the situation; he was still far from reaching 50 points.

Gratitude and anticipation were there, but a sense of belonging and trust weren't enough. He needed a more symbolic gesture.

Suddenly, Luffy raised his hand and removed his straw hat.

This action startled Nami slightly.

Holding the hat, Luffy looked at Nami through the crack in the door, his tone becoming exceptionally solemn: "This hat was entrusted to me by someone very important. It represents a promise and an adventure."

Luffy paused, seemingly choosing his words carefully: "For now, I'll leave it with you."

To Nami's astonishment, Luffy reached out and gently placed the still-damp straw hat on her head.

The hat was a bit too big, almost completely obscuring her eyes, and still retained Luffy's body heat and the salty smell of the sea.

Looking at Nami, whose face was mostly hidden by the straw hat, revealing only her delicate chin and slightly parted lips, Luffy slowly said:

"As my navigator, and as a token of our promise, return it to me when you truly believe I can help you achieve your dreams, when you are truly willing to board my ship."

This action spoke volumes.

Nami didn't fully understand the meaning of the straw hat, but she could sense its weight.

This wasn't just a simple token; it was more like a connection? An invitation imbued with respect and entrustment?
