Chapter 3 — The Lost Ruins

*flash back*

The galaxy is vast, filled with stars, planets, and civilizations that rise and fall like waves in the cosmic ocean. To Zor-El, nothing fascinated him more than what lay beyond Krypton's orbit, beyond the familiar red light of Rao. It had been decades since he first journeyed into the uncharted sectors of space, searching for rare minerals to stabilize the planetary core. But on one fateful mission, he discovered something that would forever change the fate of Krypton—and the universe itself.

The ruins were located in a remote, dying galaxy far from any known trade routes. A planet, cold and lifeless, its surface cracked and barren, orbiting a dead sun. Most Kryptonians would have considered it worthless. But Zor-El had a different eye for significance. The planet was littered with structures—monolithic buildings, etched with symbols that defied all Kryptonian knowledge. Advanced technology hummed faintly beneath layers of dust and decay. This was not a planet abandoned; it was a vault of knowledge.

Zor-El maneuvered his ship carefully through the jagged canyons that led to the ruins. The exterior walls of the structures were inscribed with pictograms resembling humanoid figures, armored and imposing. Some appeared to soar across the sky; others wielded weapons that fired beams of light. A subtle energy signature pulsed faintly beneath the surface.

He activated the ship's sensors, scanning for any residual life forms. None were detected. But the data revealed something impossible: a dormant archive buried beneath the ruins, containing genetic records of an alien race from another universe.

He descended cautiously, landing near a massive crystalline tower. The air inside the ruins was still, heavy with millennia of decay. As he approached the central chamber, the floor shifted beneath his boots. A hidden mechanism activated, revealing a vault carved into the rock. Within it floated hundreds of glowing capsules, each containing genetic material preserved through an unknown process.

Zor-El's eyes widened as he read the labels etched on the containers in the alien language. One, in particular, stood out. A humanoid species known as the Viltrumites.

According to the archives, the Viltrumites had once ruled over multiple galaxies, conquering worlds and subjugating civilizations with their unmatched physical prowess. Their biology was unique: they possessed extraordinary strength, near immortality, and the ability to adapt to any planetary environment. Even more astonishing, their genetic makeup had an invasive quality—it could dominate and overwrite other species' DNA, essentially assimilating them.

But the records also told of their downfall. A civil war had ravaged their empire, combined with a catastrophic viral outbreak that nearly annihilated the species. Only fragments of their genetic material survived, scattered across the universe. Zor-El stared at the vials in awe. The implications were staggering.

"If this is real…," he whispered, running his hand across one of the glowing capsules, "then this is a key… a key to survival."

Zor-El knew the risks. Kryptonian law had strictly forbidden genetic experimentation after the creation of Doomsday eons ago. That disaster had left a mark on history, a reminder of the danger of tampering with life. Yet, as he examined the Viltrumite gene, he understood why he had been drawn here. Krypton was dying, and the planet's collapse would doom not only its people but the legacy of every noble house.

He retrieved the vial and ran it through the ship's scanners. The Viltrumite DNA displayed a unique structure, capable of merging with other genetic material. The archives even suggested that under certain conditions, it could adapt and survive in a new host while retaining its inherent power.

Zor-El's mind raced. Could he integrate this DNA with the Kryptonian genome? Could he create a hybrid that retained the best traits of both species? Could this be the key to saving Krypton?

He carefully stored the vial in a protective containment unit aboard his ship. But there was more. Among the archives were fragments of an even older, more mysterious genome. Ancient Kryptonian texts had long hinted at a being known as Ra, a solar deity whose energy had been said to infuse certain bloodlines. The ruins contained evidence that the genetic remnants of Ra still existed, buried deep beneath Krypton itself, encoded into the planet's very structure.

If he combined the Viltrumite DNA with the divine gene of Ra, along with the strongest Kryptonian bloodlines, Zor-El realized he could potentially create a being unlike any Kryptonian that had ever existed. A being who could survive the destruction of Krypton and carry its legacy to another world.

But the process would be dangerous. Genetic material from multiple powerful lineages could conflict, potentially producing a catastrophic mutation. The Viltrumite DNA alone was invasive enough to overwrite any other genome it touched. The gene of Ra, divine and ancient, might reject the hybridization entirely. And the very bloodlines of Krypton, each proud and strong, would resist alteration.

Yet, Zor-El knew he had no choice. Krypton's future was collapsing faster than the council could acknowledge. If he failed, the planet would die, and all its inhabitants would perish.

He secured the vials and initiated a course for home. As the engines of his ship glowed against the black void of space, he gazed back at the ruins one last time. The ancient civilization that had nearly perished across dimensions had left him a gift—a final chance.

"This will save them," Zor-El whispered. "Or it will destroy me trying."

Upon returning to Krypton, he began designing the first phase of the experiment. He would need to gather genetic material from the strongest bloodlines: intelligence from the House of El, combat prowess from the House of Zod, resilience from the House of Van, and divine energy from Ra.

Every step was perilous. Every choice could backfire. Yet as Zor-El stared at the stars above Krypton, he felt a strange certainty. Somewhere in the balance between science, divinity, and alien power lay a hope that Krypton had never known.

And it would begin with a child.

The first step toward salvation—and the last experiment of Krypton—had officially begun.
