Chapter 1 - The man i was never meant to meet

Aria's POV

The first rule in my father's house was simple.

Never mention Adrian Laurent.

It had been that way for as long as I could remember.

Whenever his name appeared in the news or someone mentioned the powerful CEO during dinner parties, my father's expression would harden instantly. The warmth would leave his voice, replaced by something else,

Hatred.

I never understood why.

No one ever explained it to me. My mother avoided the subject completely, and the few times I dared to ask, my father would simply say the same thing.

"Stay away from him, Aria. That man is not someone you need in your life."

So I stopped asking.

---

The grand ballroom of the St. Regis Hotel glittered under enormous crystal chandeliers. Wealth and power filled the room, expensive suits, designer gowns, and the quiet arrogance of people who ruled industries.

I tugged nervously at the hem of my silver dress.

At nineteen, I had attended enough of these events with my father to know the routine. Smile politely. Shake hands. Speak only when spoken to.

Be perfect.

My father stood nearby speaking with a group of politicians, his posture rigid and commanding as always. People listened carefully when he spoke. They always did.

He was a powerful man.

But even powerful men had enemies.

And the biggest one, apparently, shared our last name.

I reached for a glass of champagne from a passing tray, mostly to give my hands something to do.

"First gala?"

The deep voice behind me sent a small jolt through my spine.

I turned slightly to see a tall man in his early thirties smiling politely.

"Is it that obvious?" I asked.

He chuckled.

"You've been staring at the exit like you're planning your escape."

I laughed softly. "Maybe I am."

Before he could reply, the atmosphere in the room suddenly changed.

A quiet murmur moving through the crowd.

People began turning their heads toward the entrance.

Curious, I followed their gaze.

And then I saw him.

The man walking into the ballroom didn't look like anyone else in the room.

Where others tried to command attention, he simply took it.

Tall.

Broad-shouldered.

Dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit that fit his powerful frame like it had been designed specifically for him.

His dark hair was neatly styled, and his sharp jawline gave him an almost intimidating presence.

But it wasn't just his looks.

It was the way he moved, Calm and Confident.

he had the kind of control that made people step aside without even realizing they were doing it.

"Speak of the devil," the man beside me muttered.

I blinked. "What?"

"That's Adrian Laurent."

My breath caught.

Adrian.

Uncle Adrian???, My father's stepbrother.

The man I had been warned about my entire life.

I had seen pictures of him before, of course. Magazine covers, business articles, interviews about his billion-dollar company.

But none of those pictures had prepared me for this.

He was… overwhelming.

Dangerously charismatic.

Several executives approached him immediately, shaking his hand and greeting him with eager smiles.

But Adrian Laurent didn't seem particularly impressed.

His expression remained calm. Reserved. His dark eyes scanned the room with quiet calculation.

And then

They stopped on me.

The distance between us was across the ballroom.

Yet somehow it felt like the room had suddenly shrunk.

His gaze was intense.

Focused.

As if he were trying to place a memory.

A strange heat crept up my neck.

Why was he looking at me like that?

The man beside me shifted awkwardly. "Well… this just got interesting."

"What do you mean?" I asked quietly.

He leaned closer. "Your father and Adrian Laurent haven't been in the same room in years."

My stomach tightened.

I turned instinctively toward my father.

He had seen him too.

The expression on my father's face was unmistakable.

Pure fury.

Across the ballroom, Adrian noticed it.

And slowly… a faint, knowing smile appeared on his lips.

Not friendly,

Like two men who shared a history neither of them had forgotten.

The tension between them was thick enough to feel from across the room.

"Aria."

My father's voice cut through the air like a blade.

I turned quickly.

He was already walking toward me.

His eyes briefly glanced to Adrian before returning to me.

"Stay here," he said firmly.

But it was already too late.

Because at that exact moment

Adrian Laurent began walking in our direction.

Each step was slow and deliberate.

My pulse quickened for reasons I didn't understand.

My father stopped a few feet in front of me, his shoulders stiff.

And then Adrian reached us.

Up close, he was even more intimidating.

Taller than my father.

Calmer.

His dark eyes moved to my father first.

"Well," Adrian said smoothly. "It's been a long time."

My father's voice was ice cold.

"Not long enough."

The two men stared at each other like opposing forces.

Then Adrian's gaze shifted to me.

And for a moment, something changed in his expression.

Recognition.

Curiosity.

Maybe even surprise.

"Is this…?" he murmured.

My father stepped slightly in front of me.

"Yes," he said sharply. "My daughter."

Adrian studied me for a second longer.

Then he extended his hand.

"Aria Laurent," he said quietly.

The sound of my name in his deep voice sent an unexpected shiver down my spine.

"I'm your uncle."

His pause was deliberate.

"Step-uncle, technically."

My father didn't take the handshake.

But after a moment, I did.

His hand was warm, almost immediately a shiver ran down my spine, like a jolt from our connected hands, i tried to pull my hands away but his grip was strong.

his hand tightened slightly around mine before letting go.

Adrian's gaze lingered on my face just a little longer than necessary.

Something unreadable flickered in his eyes.

Then he looked back at my father.

"You've kept her hidden well," he said calmly.

My father's jaw tightened.

"Stay away from my daughter."

The words were low and, dangerous.

Adrian's expression didn't change.

But his eyes returned to me once more.

Slowly.

Carefully.

As if seeing me for the first time.

"Interesting," he murmured.

Then he gave a polite nod and walked away.

But somehow…

I had the unsettling feeling that meeting Adrian Laurent tonight was going to change everything.
