Chapter 3 - THE CEREMONY BEGINS

Lily's POV

The clearing smelled like flowers and magic and fear.

Lily pressed herself against the back of the crowd. Tried to take up less space. The ceremonial grounds were beautiful tonight. Silver moon flowers hanging from trees. Glowing lanterns that made everything look like a dream.

But it felt like a nightmare.

The unmated wolves had formed a circle around the bonfire. Strong wolves at the front. Pretty wolves. Wolves that the Moon Goddess might actually see. Lily was at the very back with three other omegas, all of them trying to disappear.

Vivienne was at the front.

White dress. Blonde hair with flowers woven through it. Positioned close to where Kael would stand like she already knew what was going to happen. Like the Moon Goddess had already made her choice.

Maybe she had.

Elder Maris and the council sat on raised platforms. Ancient. Judging. Waiting for someone to mess up.

Alpha Garrick stepped to the edge of the bonfire. His voice boomed across the clearing, calling down the blessing. The words were old. The power was real. Lily could feel it pressing down on her skin.

A girl near the front gasped.

Silver light. A bond snapping into place. The girl and a male wolf stared at each other and then they were moving toward each other, their faces glowing with—

Lily looked away.

Another bond. And another. Around the circle, wolves were finding their soulmates. The light was beautiful. Devastating. Lily watched and felt something cold settle in her chest.

This was not going to happen for her.

She had always known it but seeing it made it real. Made it final. The Moon Goddess had gifts for other wolves. For stronger wolves. For wolves that mattered.

Not for orphans with no rank.

The ceremony kept going. More light. More joy. More proof that Lily was invisible to the Goddess just like she was invisible to everyone else.

Then the air changed.

A pull. Violent. Sudden.

It hit her chest and she couldn't breathe. Her body went rigid. For a second she couldn't move. Couldn't think. Could only feel this thing yanking at her, demanding she turn around, demanding she—

She looked.

Golden eyes across the bonfire.

Kael Stormborn.

He was looking at her. Not dismissive. Not pitying. Like she was the only thing he could see. Like his entire world had collapsed into this one second.

The bond slammed into place.

Not gentle. Not soft. Violent and desperate and absolute. Silver thread blazing between them so bright it should have burned her alive. Her wolf surged forward for the first time in years. Not just waking up.

Screaming.

MATE MATE MATE and everything it had ever wanted was suddenly right there across the fire.

Kael's eyes went wide. Golden light flared around him. For three perfect seconds, the world made sense. The past didn't matter. Her weakness didn't matter. None of it mattered because she had found him and he had found her and—

Then something ripped through her chest.

A second pull. Harder. Violent. It yanked her attention away from Kael and toward the forest edge where shadows lived.

Golden eyes watched her from the darkness.

Same eyes as Kael but warmer. Fiercer. More dangerous. She didn't know him but her body did. Her wolf did.

The bond crashed into place.

Two bonds.

Two mates.

No. No no no. This was wrong. This was impossible.

The clearing went completely silent.

Even the bonfire seemed to hold its breath.

Lily stood frozen between them, the silver threads pulling her in opposite directions, tearing her in half. Her heart was racing so fast it might explode. Her wolf was howling. Her hands were shaking.

This was not supposed to happen.

But the threads were there. She could see them. Could feel them burning through her chest. Two bonds. Two souls. Two Alphas staring at her like she had just broken the world.

Then Elder Maris screamed.

"Abomination!"

The word shattered everything. Everyone turned to look. The joyful expressions from the other bonded pairs turned confused. Then afraid. Then angry.

Vivienne's face went pale. Then red. Then something twisted that made Lily's stomach drop.

"She used dark magic," Vivienne's voice cut through the noise, sweet as poison. "How else could a worthless omega trap two Alphas? She bewitched them both."

The accusation spread like fire. Whispers became shouts. The beautiful ceremony that had been full of light was rotting from the inside out.

The stranger from the shadows stepped into the firelight. Identical to Kael but completely different. Black hair longer. Tied back. Golden eyes angrier. This was the exiled brother. Lysander Stormborn, back after five years, and he had a bond to her.

Kael moved toward her. His wolf was right beneath his skin, trying to break through.

Then his father's hand came down on his shoulder.

The grip was not gentle. It was a cage. A warning. A demand.

"Reject her," Alpha Garrick's voice cut through everything. "Now."

But she was his mate.

The Goddess does not make mistakes. Everyone knew that. How could Kael reject what the Goddess herself had chosen?

Except his father's grip was getting tighter. And across the clearing, the elders were already moving. Already calling for action. Already treating Lily like she was a disease.

Vivienne's voice rose above everything else.

"She used dark magic. She has bewitched them both. Arrest her. Everyone saw what she did."

The accusation spread through the crowd like poison. Wolves who moments before had been celebrating their own bonds were now turning on Lily with suspicion and fear.

Kael felt the reality settling over him like a stone weight.

If he claimed her, if he stepped forward and said yes to this bond, the pack would tear itself apart. Civil war. Everything his father built would crumble.

One girl. One omega. Versus the stability of the entire pack.

The choice was not a choice.

Across the circle, Lily was looking at him.

Her violet eyes were desperate and full of hope. She believed in him. She thought he would choose her. She thought he was strong enough to burn the world.

She was wrong.

Kael opened his mouth.

"I, Kael Stormborn, heir to Shadowridge Pack, reject you, Lily Thorne, as my fated mate."

The bond shredded.
