The letter arrived on a Tuesday.
It wasn't an email neither was it a message through Mara. It was an actual letter, printed on paper so heavy it felt like a statement, folded into a black envelope with Ana's full name on the front in clean type, Anastasia Calloway, and no return address. She found it wedged between the cafe's morning delivery invoices, which meant someone had placed it there between 6am and 7am, which meant someone had been at her cafe before she opened, which meant the locks were apparently decorative.
She opened it at the back counter while her first batch of croissants finished in the oven.
The Voss Group ran across the top in restrained gold lettering. Below it, in clean, dense paragraphs, was a contract.
Not for Noir. Not for waitressing.
A consulting contract. Specialist Events and Hospitality Liaison, the title read, which was the kind of title designed to sound like nothing while meaning something else entirely. The rate was printed midway down the first page. Ana read it, blinked, and read it again. Then she set the letter flat on the counter, turned around, checked her croissants, turned back, and looked at the number one more time.
It was four times her current monthly income.
She stood in her kitchen that smelled like butter and flour and warm pastry and thought about her mother's hospital. She thought about Imogen's school fees. She thought about Hugo's texts and Ivor's texts and the 34% profit margin that was exceptional for the sector and still wasn't enough, it was never quite enough, and it probably wouldn't be enough for another two years at the current rate even if nothing went wrong, and things had a habit of going wrong.
She thought about Lucien Voss behind his desk saying that increase has been reversed like it was nothing. Like her mother's financial terror was an administrative detail he could correct in an afternoon.
She thought about what it meant to owe a man like that anything.
At the bottom of the contract, below the signature line, a single line had been added in the same clean type:
This is not a request, Miss Calloway. But I am asking.
She read that line four times.
Then she called her lawyer. A friend from business school named Dev who owed her a favour and charged her half his rate and asked him to look at it.
Dev called her back in forty minutes.
"It's clean," he said, sounding faintly suspicious about this. "Everything's above board. Termination clauses are actually generous. Whatever this company is, their legal team is very good."
"Is there anything in it I should worry about?" Ana asked.
A pause. "Ana. The rate alone should worry you."
"I know."
"People don't pay this much for events liaison."
"I know."
Another pause. "Do you know what you're doing?"
She sighed heavily. She looked at the contract on her counter. At the black envelope. At her name in clean type.
"Not entirely," she said. "But I'm going to do it anyway."
She signed it that afternoon. Photographed it. Sent the copy to the address on the letterhead. Within ten minutes she received a confirmation from someone named Ellis, Mr. Voss's executive assistant, informing her that she was expected at Voss Tower on Thursday at seven in the evening for a private corporate event, dress code formal, a car would be arranged.
She stared at the word formal.
She called Kate, her beautiful, sophisticated, rich, African American best friend.

"Please Kate, I need a dress," Ana said.
Kate was silent for exactly two seconds — the time it took to shift into full operational mode. "What kind?"
"Formal. Corporate event. But not... not boring corporate. More like..."
"Dangerous corporate." Kate replied with the tone of someone who was aware.
Ana thought about the amber lighting at Noir. The cut crystal. The way the guests wore money like a second skin. "Yes," she said. "That."
"Size?"
"Come on Kate, you know my size."
"I know your cafe size," Kate said. "The size where you wear an apron for eight hours and don't think about it. I need your going-to-impress-terrifying-people size."
"They're the same size, Kate."
"They are absolutely not. Give me until tomorrow morning. Don't touch your hair."
Ana looked at her reflection in the cafe window. Her hair was in a knot secured with what appeared to be a chopstick. "My hair is fine."
"Ana." Kate said with exasperation.
"It's a chopstick, not a crime."
"I'm coming over tomorrow at nine," Kate said, and hung up.

Kate arrived at eight forty-five with a dress bag, two coffees, and the expression of a woman with a vision. The dress was black — deep, absolute black that somehow managed to be both modest and devastating, structured at the top with a neckline that sat just off the shoulder, fitted through the waist, and fell to the knee in a way that moved when she walked. Not the Noir uniform, which had been beautiful in the way expensive things were generally beautiful. This was different. This had been chosen specifically for Ana's shape. The wide hips, the curve of her waist, the pale skin that would contrast sharply with the fabric.
"Kate," Ana said.
"I know." Kate said with a mischievous grin and a flint in her eyes.
"Where did you even—"
"I know people. Put it on." Kate replied with glee as though she had won an award for a project.
Ana put it on. She stood in front of the bathroom mirror and did something she rarely did with her own appearance. She looked at herself without the critical editor's eye, without the mental catalogue of things to fix or minimize. She just looked.
The dress fit like it had been made for her.
"The hair," Kate said, appearing behind her. "Up. But not tight — loose, like you did it in two minutes and it turned out perfect. The kind of up that makes people wonder. We're aiming for messily beautiful" Winking dramatically at Ana.
"Wonder what?" Ana asked suspiciously, knowing her ever mischievous best friend who was always up to no good.
"What it looks like down." Kate was already reaching for the chopstick. "Now hold still."

Voss Tower was in the financial district, forty-two floors of dark glass and steel that reflected the city back at itself without apology. The car service dropped Ana at the private entrance — not the lobby, a side entrance where a man with an earpiece was waiting — at six fifty-eight.
She was two minutes early. She had a feeling that mattered here.
The man with the earpiece checked her name, spoke into his collar, and held the door. She was taken to an elevator that opened directly from a private corridor, and then up — she counted — thirty-eight floors, where the doors opened into a space that stopped her mid-step.
The event floor was extraordinary.
The entire level had been opened up — no internal walls, just columns and glass on all sides, the city spread out below like a lit circuit board. The ceiling was high and dark, the lighting low and gold, the tables dressed in black linen with arrangements that were sculptural rather than decorative. Perhaps sixty guests, she estimated, not more — this was not a party, it was a gathering, which was different, and the distinction mattered because parties were about enjoyment and gatherings were about something else.
About two-thirds of the guests were men. The remaining third were women who had the particular posture of people accustomed to being underestimated and had stopped caring about it. Several conversations stopped fractionally when she entered. She kept her chin level and found the nearest point of orientation. A long bar along the east wall where two bartenders worked with the focused precision of people who knew this room didn't tolerate mistakes.
A man materialized at her elbow.
"You must be Ana," he said, and his voice was warm in a way that felt like it cost him nothing, easy and genuine simultaneously, the voice of someone who was very good at making people feel found. "I'm Conner."
She turned.
He was tall — dramatically so, the kind of tall that reorganized the architecture of a room — with brown hair pushed back from his face and eyes that were blue and direct and smiling before his mouth was. Broadly built but not heavy, the suggestion of regular physical effort visible in the way he stood. Handsome in an uncomplicated way, the kind of handsome that didn't require effort or maintenance, that just existed and was aware of itself without being insufferable about it. He was holding two glasses of champagne and offered her one with the ease of someone who had been expecting her specifically.
She took it. "How did you know who I was?"
"Silver said there'd be a redhead in a black dress arriving at seven." He glanced at his watch. "And it's seven, and you're here, and—" his eyes moved briefly over her appearance without being offensive about it — "that dress is doing something very specific to this room."
Ana considered that. "Silver?"
Something shifted in his expression — an edit, small and quick. "Voss," he said. "Old habit. We went to school together. Business school. Before he became..." a brief gesture at the room, the tower, the forty-two floors of dark glass... "all of this."
"You're friends?"
"Something like that." He clinked his glass lightly against hers. "He doesn't really do friends. But I'm the closest thing he has to one, which I choose to find flattering." He nodded toward the room. "I'm here working, technically — photographing the event. But he asked me to find you when you arrived. Make sure you weren't thrown to the wolves immediately."
"Are there wolves?"
Conner looked out at the room. "There are always wolves," he said pleasantly. "The trick is knowing which ones bite."
Ana followed his gaze across the event floor and found, without intending to, Lucien Voss.
He was across the room, partially turned away from her, in conversation with two men whose suits suggested serious money and whose posture suggested serious leverage. He was in black — black suit, dark shirt, no tie again, which on any other man might have read as careless and on him read as a choice so deliberate it bordered on a message. His silver hair was as she'd seen it before, perfect in the way things were perfect when they simply were what they were without effort.
He wasn't looking at her.
She was absolutely certain he knew exactly where she was.
"What's my actual role tonight?" she asked Conner.
"Officially? Liaison. Meaning you circulate, you observe, you're a friendly face that isn't affiliated with anything specific." He took a sip of champagne. "Unofficially?" A small pause. "I genuinely don't know. But when Voss goes to the trouble of sending a contract and a car, there's usually a reason that has nothing to do with events management."
Ana looked at her champagne. "That's comforting."
"I find honesty more useful than comfort." He smiled. "You'll be fine. You have good instincts, I can tell already. And you don't look like someone who scares easily."
She thought about the underground room. The dead man on the floor. The golden door closing like a vault. "I scare easily," she said. "I'm just good at not showing it."
Conner looked at her for a moment with an expression she couldn't fully read — something that was assessment and something that was warmer than that, and something else underneath that she catalogued and didn't examine. "Even better," he said.
Across the room, without turning, Lucien Voss set down his glass.

She worked the room for ninety minutes. Conner had given her the unwritten map of it. Who was connected to whom, which conversations were transactional and which were territorial, which guests were fixtures and which were guests in name only. He circulated with his camera, always at the right angle, catching things without making people aware of being caught, and checked in on her twice with the ease of someone who had decided she was worth checking in on.
She was good at this. She'd always been good at reading rooms, at knowing when to speak and when to listen, at finding the question that made someone feel both seen and not interrogated. Years of managing difficult suppliers, navigating her brothers' personalities, sitting across from her mother in a hospital room finding things to say that were true and also kind — all of it had built something in her that functioned very well in a room full of careful people.
She learned several things in ninety minutes that she was fairly certain she was meant to learn. She did not learn several others.
At eight forty-seven she found herself near the edge of the room, looking out at the city below, and became aware that someone had come to stand beside her. She didn't need to turn to know.
The scent reached her first. Something clean and cold, faintly woody, indescribably expensive.
"You've been watching me work," she said, to the window.
"I've been watching everyone work," Lucien said. "That's what evenings like this are for."
She turned. He was beside her, close enough that the distance required a choice — step back or hold the ground. She held the ground.
Up close at this proximity he was even more precisely constructed than she'd registered before. The line of his jaw, the faint shadow of silver in his brows, the way the city light through the glass caught the green of his eyes and turned the silver flecks in them luminous. He was looking at her the way he'd looked at her across the desk — completely — but something in it was calibrated differently tonight. Less calculating. More considered.
"How did I do?" she asked.
"You learned Miroslav Cech's daughter's name from his assistant in the first eight minutes," he said. "Used it twenty minutes later when you spoke to him directly. He smiled. He never smiles." A brief pause. "You also avoided the Reinhardt brothers entirely, which was the correct call, and you had a twenty-minute conversation with Yuna Park that she ended by giving you her personal card." His eyes moved over her face. "She doesn't give anyone her personal card."
"She asked about the cafe," Ana said. "I told her about the Florence year. She studied there too, briefly."
"I know." Something in his expression — not warmth exactly, but an adjacent country. "That's not something I knew from the file."
She looked at him. "Is that good or bad?"
"It means there are things about you that aren't in the file," he said. "Which is either a problem or interesting."
"Which is it?"
The city spread out behind him, forty-two floors of lit glass and night sky. He looked at her for a moment in a way that felt like it went slightly past the calculation, slightly past the filing, into something he didn't immediately name.
"Interesting," he said.
Then, before she could answer — before she could examine the particular quality of that word in his voice — Conner appeared at her side with his camera slung over one shoulder and the easy smile of a man arriving at the exact wrong moment with the exact right amount of obliviousness.
"Great event," he said to Lucien, without a trace of the deference the rest of the room showed him. "Ana's been brilliant, by the way. Yuna Park gave her a card."
"I know," Lucien said.
Conner looked between the two of them. Something moved in his expression — quick, contained, filed. "Right," he said. "I'll grab more shots of the east side." He looked at Ana. "I'll find you before the end of the night."
He walked away. Ana watched him go and then looked back at Lucien, who had watched the exchange with the specific stillness of someone cataloguing something.
"Old friend," she said.
"Yes," Lucien said. And something in the word was just slightly too careful to be simple.

The car took her home at eleven.
She sat in the back seat with Yuna Park's card in her palm and the city moving past the window and thought about a number of things in a careful order. The contract. The rate. Conner's easy warmth and the edit she'd caught in his expression. Lucien across the room at the beginning of the night, not looking at her. Lucien beside her at the window, saying interesting in a voice she was not going to think about.
Her phone buzzed. Unknown number. She opened the message.
You were right about the Reinhardt brothers. They've been avoided by everyone competent for two years. You did it on instinct in eight minutes.
She looked at the message for a long time. Then she typed back:
Are you going to text me from unknown numbers every time I do something you find notable?
The reply came in under a minute.
Probably not every time.
She put her phone away.
She looked out the window at the city.
She was in trouble.
She knew she was in trouble.
She thought she might be in trouble in a way that was going to cost her significantly more than a hospital bill.
The car pulled up outside her building. She let herself in, climbed the stairs, changed out of the devastating dress, hung it carefully on the back of her door. She made tea. She sat at her kitchen table in the quiet of 11pm and looked at the black envelope still on her counter, at her name in clean type, at the contract she'd signed her name to that afternoon.
'This is not a request, Miss Calloway. But I am asking.'
She thought about the fact that a man who controlled rooms full of powerful people in the most dangerous city in the world had written those words to her and sent them in a letter because he hadn't wanted to ask in person.
She thought about what that meant.
She drank her tea.
She went to bed.
She did not sleep as well as she had the night after the underground room, and she examined why, this time, just a little.
It didn't help.
