Chapter 2 - Imugi

The early morning mist still clung to the wide grounds of the Hu estate, its ancient stones absorbing the first rays of sunlight. Inside the training room, the atmosphere was thick with a strong tension. Jin Hu was drenched in sweat, the movements he was making was a blur of carefulness and strength as he practiced with a pair of long, curved swords.

Master Wei watched from behind the scene with his eyes that were narrowed in disapproval. The old man's face was a mask of stern disappointment, his presence was like a constant reminder to Jin of the weight of tradition and expectation that Jin carried.

"Again!" Master Wei barked with his voice echoing off the high ceilings. "Your strikes lack conviction. The Imugi won't wait for you to get it right!"

Jin gritted his teeth as he was pushing through the fatigue. His muscles ached from the relentless training, but he refused to falter. Each swing of his sword was more desperate, each movement more forceful as he tried to meet the impossible standard set before him by his master.

"Master Wei, I've been training for hours," Jin said between labored breaths. "I need a moment to—"

"No excuses!" Master Wei snapped. "The Imugi will not give you a moment to catch your breath. It will seize every weakness, every moment of hesitation. Your training must be perfect!"

Jin's grip tightened on the swords, and he launched into a series of rapid, aggressive strikes. His face was a mask of grim exhaustion, but Master Wei's piercing gaze seemed to see through his exhaustion.

Master Wei approached walking with his steps silent on the wooden floor. "Your movements are precise, but your spirit is lacking. You're too focused on the physical. The Imugi will prey on your fears and doubts."

Jin's frustration boiled over. "I've given everything to this training. What more do you want from me?"

Master Wei's expression hardened. "I want you to understand that this is not just a battle of strength. It is a battle of willpower, of inner resolve. Show me that you are not just a skilled fighter, but a true protector."

With a swift motion, Master Wei struck the floor with his staff, creating a shockwave that rattled the training room. The force of it knocked Jin off balance, causing him to stumble.

Jin glared at Master Wei, his breath coming in ragged gasps. "What was that for?"

Master Wei's eyes flashed with stern intensity. "You think you're ready for the Imugi? You're not even close. You need to harness your inner power, not just rely on physical strength."

Jin's eyes narrowed as he focused his energy, feeling the familiar surge of power rise within him. He extended his hands, unleashing a controlled blast of energy that caused a small gust of wind to sweep through the room, knocking over a few training dummies.

Master Wei watched with a critical eye. "Better, but still not enough. The Imugi will test every facet of your being. It will exploit any hesitation, any flaw. You must be ready for that."

Jin wiped the sweat from his brow, his frustration giving way to a grim sense of determination. "I won't let it defeat me. I'll be ready."

Master Wei's expression softened just slightly, though his tone remained harsh. "You must understand, Jin, that this training is not about pushing you to your limits. It is about expanding those limits. Your greatest challenge will be to stay focused, to not let fear cloud your judgment."

Jin nodded, his resolve hardening. "I understand. I'll keep pushing myself."

Master Wei gave a curt nod. "Good. But remember, the Imugi is not just a creature of legend. It is a manifestation of darkness. Your training must reflect that understanding. Harness your power, not just as a weapon, but as a shield."

Jin took a deep breath, centering himself. "Understood. I'll keep that in mind."

The door creaked open, and Jin's younger sister, Mei Hu, stepped in. Her eyes, usually filled with curiosity, were now clouded with worry. She watched Jin with a mix of admiration and anxiety.

"Jin, Father asked for you," Mei said, her voice laced with concern. "He sounded urgent."

Jin's brow furrowed. "I'll be right there. How's your training going?"

Mei's shoulders slumped. "I'm trying, but it's hard to focus with all the talk about the Imugi. I wish I knew more."

Jin offered her a reassuring smile. "You're doing fine, Mei. Just stay focused on your own training. I'll handle the rest."

Mei gave him a hesitant nod before leaving. Jin's mind was already racing. He knew that whatever his father wanted to discuss could be crucial to his preparation.

As he entered the grand study, Liu Hu, Jin's father, was seated behind a massive oak desk cluttered with scrolls and ancient artifacts. Liu Hu's presence was commanding, his eyes showing both wisdom and exhaustion. He looked up as Jin approached, a deep sigh escaping his lips.

"Jin, sit down," Liu Hu said, his voice somber.

Jin took a seat opposite his father, his posture straight and attentive. "What's the matter, Father?"

Liu Hu leaned forward, his expression grave. "The Imugi is not just a legend, Jin. It is a powerful entity that will not only test your physical abilities but also your mental fortitude. We have reason to believe that it has been chosen and prepared."

Jin's eyes narrowed. "Chosen? Prepared for what?"

Liu Hu handed Jin a small, intricately carved amulet. "This amulet is a talisman of revelation. It will glow when you are near the Imugi. It's your key to identifying and confronting the beast."

Jin examined the amulet closely, noting its delicate craftsmanship and the faint aura it seemed to emit. "How will I know when it's glowing? And how will I find the Imugi?"

Liu Hu's gaze was intense. "The amulet will emit a warm light when you are in proximity to the Imugi. As for finding it, you will need to trust your instincts and the training you have received. The Imugi's chosen vessel is hidden among us, disguised in plain sight."

Jin's mind raced as he absorbed this information. "And what about the allies the Imugi might have?"

Liu Hu's eyes darkened. "Rumors suggest there may be others who support the Imugi. They may not reveal themselves easily, but they will be as dangerous as the Imogi itself."

Jin's jaw clenched. "Understood. I'll be cautious."

Just then, a knock echoed through the study, and the door swung open. Mei stepped in, her face flushed with anxiety. "Father, I heard the Imugi mentioned. Is Jin in danger?"

Liu Hu's expression softened slightly. "Mei, this is not the time to worry. Jin is well-prepared. But you must remain vigilant as well. There are forces at play that we do not fully understand."

Jin placed a comforting hand on Mei's shoulder. "I'll be fine, Mei. I promise."

Mei looked between her father and brother, her worry evident. "Please be careful, Jin. I don't want anything to happen to you."

Jin nodded, trying to reassure her. "I will. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to continue my training."

As Mei left, Jin turned back to his father. "Father, is there anything else I should know before I go?"

Liu Hu's eyes bore into him. "Just remember, Jin, the Imugi is not just a threat to you but to everyone you care about. Stay sharp and don't underestimate it."

Jin stood, determination burning in his eyes. "I won't. I'll find the Imugi and stop it."
