Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: Flames in the Night

Zara's heart pounded as she sprinted through the narrow alley, the crackle of fire chasing her like a predator. Smoke clawed at her lungs, making each breath a battle. Behind her, the city she once called home burned — orange tongues licking the sky, devouring everything she had known.

She stumbled over a loose cobblestone, barely catching herself, and cursed under her breath. No time to think. Only move.

A shadow darted ahead, sharp and purposeful. Zara froze for a split second, her instincts screaming both danger and opportunity. It was her only chance. She dove through the opening, barely squeezing into the hidden passage. Her hands scraped against rough stone, and for a heartbeat, she wondered if she'd made it.

"You can't hide forever," a voice hissed from behind. Zara didn't look back. She had learned long ago that hesitation was death.

A sudden memory flared — the letter she had found just that morning, the one that promised secrets she wasn't ready for but couldn't ignore. Secrets someone was willing to kill for.

Her chest heaved. She needed answers. And she needed them before the fire — and the people chasing her — caught up.

Footsteps thundered closer. Zara's fingers gripped the edge of the passage. One slip, one wrong move, and it would all be over.

But she wasn't ready to die.

Not yet.

And then, just as she thought she might make it, the ground beneath her shifted…
