Chapter 7 - The First Hunt

Night fell like a velvet curtain over Kael's territory, draping the forest in shadows and silver moonlight. The air was thick with tension, the scent of damp earth and pine mingling with something sharper—blood, power, and the unmistakable trace of danger.

Lira stood beside Kael, heart pounding. Her wolf thrummed beneath her skin, restless and impatient. The mark on her wrist glowed faintly in the moonlight, a constant reminder of the bond linking her to the Alpha King.

"They're close," Kael murmured, his silver eyes scanning the forest. Every muscle in his body was taut, ready to spring. "Vampires. One pack—strong, fast, and ruthless. They're hunting you. But they won't leave without a fight."

Lira's stomach twisted. Fight? She had trained with the pack, dodged attacks, and awakened her wolf's power, but facing a vampire pack in the wild was different. Far different.

Kael turned to her, his hand brushing hers—their touch brief, grounding. "Trust yourself. Trust your wolf. And trust me."

The words sent a shiver through her body. It wasn't just reassurance. It was power, possessive and commanding. And beneath the fear, something else stirred—something electric and dangerous.

The first signs of the vampires came as a rustle in the trees, almost imperceptible. Lira froze, senses on high alert. Her wolf's instincts screamed at her, pushing adrenaline into her veins.

Then they appeared. Two shadows, moving faster than the eye could track, erupted from the darkness. Their eyes glowed crimson, fangs bared, claws extended.

Kael stepped in front of Lira, muscles coiled, every move precise. "Stay behind me!" he commanded, but his voice was low, a growl that vibrated through her chest.

The vampires lunged. Kael was a blur—faster, stronger, deadly. He moved like a shadow, catching one vampire mid-air and snapping its neck with terrifying ease. The other hissed and charged toward Lira.

Lira's heart raced. Her wolf surged within her, silver eyes flashing instinctively. She didn't think. She reacted.

The vampire slammed into her. She rolled, twisting her body, and slammed a glowing fist into its chest. The impact sent a shockwave through the air—silver sparks flaring from her mark. The vampire screeched, stumbling back. Lira gasped, feeling raw power for the first time.

Kael's eyes widened slightly, a rare flicker of approval crossing his face. "Good… control it!"

Lira's wolf howled internally, primal and fierce. She could feel the predator inside her responding—sharp claws, heightened senses, and a burning need to defend Kael and herself.

The battle was relentless. Vampires attacked from all sides, their speed unnatural, their hunger apparent. But Kael moved like a storm, and Lira found herself moving in sync with him. Every strike she landed was guided by instinct, every dodge precise, her wolf lending speed and strength she never thought possible.

Nero appeared beside her, massive and imposing, snarling at the vampires. "You're mine now," he growled, and Lira instinctively mirrored his stance, feeling a surge of pack instinct flow through her. Together, they were a force the vampires hadn't anticipated.

A sudden strike from a vampire caught her shoulder, and pain flared. Lira stumbled, nearly losing balance. Kael was immediately at her side, silver eyes flashing.

"Lira!" he barked. His hand gripped her jaw, forcing her to meet his gaze. The proximity made her pulse race uncontrollably. The wolf inside her roared—not in fear, but in desire, in the thrill of danger.

"Focus!" Kael commanded. "Use it—channel your wolf!"

She inhaled sharply, feeling the energy surge. Her body blurred as instinct and power merged. She moved like liquid, striking the vampire with a force that sent it flying back into the trees.

Kael watched her, his expression unreadable, until the vampire shrieked and disappeared into the shadows, its crimson eyes dimming. Then he stepped closer, brushing his hand lightly against hers, lingering longer than necessary. Lira's breath hitched, heat spreading through her body in a way she couldn't explain.

"You're stronger than I expected," he said quietly. His silver eyes softened as he studied her. "And you're mine, Lira. Never forget that."

Her heart thundered. The words were possessive. Absolute. The mark on her wrist pulsed in response, glowing brighter. Lira felt her wolf stir, wild and untamed—but also obedient, tethered to Kael in ways she didn't understand but felt deeply.

The battle raged for what felt like hours. Vampires fell one by one under Kael, Lira, and the pack's combined force. Lira's wolf allowed her to move faster, strike harder, sense attacks before they happened. She realized, with a thrill and a shiver, that her power had grown far beyond her human understanding.

Finally, the last vampire hissed, retreating into the shadows, leaving the clearing eerily quiet. Lira sank to her knees, exhausted, chest heaving. Kael appeared at her side instantly, wrapping an arm around her waist.

"You survived," he said softly, voice low and intimate. "And you fought well."

She looked up at him, her silver eyes meeting his glowing gaze. "I… I didn't know I could do that."

He cupped her cheek gently. "Your wolf did. You just let it. That's the difference between surviving… and thriving."

Her pulse raced, not from the fight alone. She could feel the intensity between them—dangerous, magnetic, all-consuming. Kael's proximity, the warmth of his body, the intensity of his gaze… it made her feel weak and alive all at once.

"Kael…" she whispered. The word slipped out like a confession.

He leaned closer, so close that she could feel the heat of his breath against her lips. "Yes?" he asked, his voice a low growl.

Her wolf growled instinctively. Desire, need, and something wild surged within her. She had never felt attraction so powerful—so undeniable. Her heart raced, matching the rhythm of her wolf's heartbeat.

Kael's lips hovered near hers, silver eyes locked on hers. For a moment, time slowed. She could hear every sound—the rustle of leaves, the distant howl of a lone wolf, the beat of her own heart—and it all centered on him.

"I…" she began, but her words faltered.

Kael didn't speak. He merely brushed his lips gently against hers—a fleeting, teasing touch. The spark it ignited sent shivers down her spine. Her wolf responded, fierce and urgent, and Lira realized in that moment: this bond, this connection… was far deeper than she had imagined.

Kael pulled back just slightly, just enough to maintain control. His thumb brushed the glowing mark on her wrist. "You're mine, Lira. And I will protect you from everything… including yourself."

Her breath hitched. "I… I want to be with you," she admitted, her voice trembling. "Even if it's dangerous."

His silver eyes softened, rare vulnerability showing through his Alpha dominance. "It will always be dangerous," he said. "But that doesn't matter. What matters is that you're mine. And tonight, we survived together. Tomorrow… the hunt continues."

Lira felt her chest tighten. The adrenaline from the battle still coursed through her, but now it was mingled with a burning awareness of Kael's presence. Desire, power, and danger—all entwined. Her wolf growled softly, and she realized the fight wasn't over. Not in the forest, not with the vampires, and certainly not with the Alpha King.

Because the more time she spent with him, the more she realized the truth: falling for Kael was inevitable… and it could very well be the most dangerous thing she had ever done.

The moon rose higher, silver light spilling over the forest. The battle had been won, but the war was just beginning. And in the shadows, unseen eyes watched them—hunters preparing for the Blood Moon heir.
