Chapter 8: Night Walks and First Kisses

The group chat exploded the moment everyone reached home.

Chika had named it "Sakura Oppai Alliance" with a string of heart and peach emojis that made Zain choke on his water. Notifications pinged nonstop: Yotsuba sending blurry selfies from her walk home, Taiga complaining about homework, Hori posting a photo of her neatly arranged dinner bento with the caption "Someone needs to learn portion control," and Sawako quietly typing "Good night, everyone… thank you for today ♡" that somehow felt directed mostly at him.

Zain lay on his bed staring at the ceiling, phone glowing against his face. The room was quiet except for the distant hum of Tokyo traffic outside his window. His new stats thrummed faintly under his skin—Level 7 felt different, like every muscle remembered the pipe swing against the spiral, every nerve carried the echo of Sawako's forehead against his chest.

117% affection. Overflow. First girlfriend route locked. System, you beautiful, perverted genius.

He rolled onto his side, replaying the rooftop garden moment in slow motion. Her small hand in his. The way she hadn't flinched when he admitted things were dangerous. The promise he'd made—to come to her when it got heavy.

A soft ping interrupted his thoughts—not the group chat.

[Private Message – Sawako Kuronuma]

Sawako: Zain-kun… are you still awake?

Sawako: I can't sleep. Thinking about today.

Zain sat up so fast he nearly dropped the phone.

Zain: Yeah, I'm here. Everything okay?

Sawako: Yes… just… I keep replaying what you said. About carrying things alone.

Sawako: I meant it. You can tell me anything. Whenever you're ready.

His thumb hovered over the keyboard. For once the Issei-style inner monologue stayed quiet—no oppai jokes, no perverted fantasies. Just a strange, warm ache in his chest.

Zain: Thank you. Really.

Zain: Actually… want to meet up? Just for a quick walk? There's a park near my place that's nice at night. No pressure.

The three dots appeared immediately.

Sawako: I'd like that.

Sawako: Give me 15 minutes? I'll sneak out quietly.

Zain was already pulling on a hoodie and sneakers.

Fifteen minutes later he waited under a streetlamp at the small neighborhood park entrance. Cherry trees lined the path, petals still drifting even after dark. The air smelled clean, faintly of rain that hadn't fallen yet. Streetlights cast long golden pools across the gravel.

Sawako appeared at the far end of the path, wearing an oversized sweater over pajamas, hair tied back loosely. She looked smaller in the dark, more vulnerable, but her steps quickened when she saw him.

"Zain-kun…"

"Hey." He smiled softly. "You really came."

She stopped in front of him, fidgeting with her sleeves. "I… wanted to see you. Just to make sure you were okay."

They started walking the loop path in comfortable silence at first. Gravel crunched under their shoes. A few late-night joggers passed, but the park felt like their own little world.

After one full loop Sawako spoke again, voice barely above a whisper.

"Today was the happiest I've felt in a long time. The stage, the takoyaki, everyone laughing… and you. You make everything feel… brighter."

Zain's heart thudded. "You do the same for me, Sawako-chan. Back home I was always the loud guy trying to make people laugh so they wouldn't see I was lonely. Here… with you and the others… it's different. Real."

She stopped under a particularly large cherry tree, petals catching in her hair like pale stars. Moonlight filtered through the branches, painting her face in silver.

"Zain-kun… can I ask something personal?"

"Anything."

"Do you… like me? Not just as a friend."

The question hung between them like a fragile thing.

Zain stepped closer, close enough to see the nervous flutter of her lashes.

"Yeah. I like you. A lot. More than like, honestly. From the first day when you blushed just because I said hi. Every time you smile it feels like winning the biggest level-up ever."

Sawako's breath caught. Her hands trembled at her sides.

"I… I like you too. So much it scares me a little. Because I've never… felt this way before."

She looked up at him, eyes shining in the moonlight.

Zain reached out slowly, brushing a stray petal from her cheek. His fingers lingered, tracing the soft line of her jaw.

"May I…?"

Sawako nodded, barely perceptible.

He leaned down. Their lips met—soft, hesitant, the first real kiss either of them had ever had. It tasted faintly of takoyaki sauce and nervous sweetness. Her hands found his hoodie, clutching the fabric like an anchor. His arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her gently closer.

Time stretched. Petals drifted around them like slow snow. The world narrowed to the warmth of her against him, the quiet sound of their breathing, the faint thump of two hearts finding rhythm.

When they finally parted, foreheads resting together, Sawako whispered against his lips.

"That was… my first kiss."

"Mine too," Zain admitted, voice rough with emotion.

She smiled—small, radiant, perfect.

They stood there wrapped in each other for long minutes, neither wanting to let go.

Eventually Sawako pulled back slightly, cheeks flaming. "We… should head back. Before my parents notice."

"Yeah. Don't want you grounded on day three of knowing me."

They walked hand-in-hand to the park exit. At the gate Sawako rose on tiptoe and pressed one more quick kiss to his cheek.

"Good night, Zain-kun. Thank you… for everything."

"Good night, Sawako. Sweet dreams."

She disappeared down her street with one last shy wave.

Zain stood under the streetlamp until her figure vanished around the corner. Then he looked up at the sky.

The crimson eclipse edge was thicker tonight—almost a visible crescent now, swallowing stars along the horizon.

He clenched his fist.

First girlfriend. First kiss. First real bond.

Whatever's coming… it's not taking this away from me.

He turned toward home, steps light despite the growing shadow overhead.

The Gamer from Kot Addu was no longer fighting alone.

And the night felt just a little less dark because of it.
