Chapter 2 - The Group and the Glow

The neon sign of the street food market buzzed softly overhead, casting a pinkish hue over the crowded tables. It was Friday night, and the air smelled of grilled meat and spicy sauce. Do hyun sat at the center of a large round table, surrounded by the only people he trusted. To his right, Okasaki was devouring a plate of skewers with enthusiastic vigor, while Cypher tinkered with a small device on the table surface. Yoo han sipped his drink quietly, observing the crowd, and Me ri sat close to Do hyun, her presence a warm anchor in the noisy environment.

Okasaki said: "This is the best spot in the city. You guys do not know what you are missing."

Cypher looked up from his gadget, pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose. He tapped the screen of the device, which emitted a soft blue light that contrasted with the warm street lamps. Cypher said: "Focus on eating, Okasaki. We are here to monitor the energy spikes, not just fill our stomachs."

Do hyun watched his friends interact, feeling a familiar sense of guilt mixed with gratitude. They believed they were here for a casual hangout, but Yoo han and Cypher had insisted on this location because their sensors had picked up irregular readings in this district. Do hyun kept his hands wrapped around his warm cup, hiding the silver rings beneath his sleeves. The tremor from the previous day had not returned, but a lingering sense of unease remained in the back of his mind.

Yoo han asked: "Do hyun, have you noticed anything strange near your apartment building?"

Do hyun shook his head slowly, taking a sip of his tea to avoid elaborating. He knew that admitting the truth would only make them worry more. He wanted to protect them from the reality of his bloodline.

Do hyun replied: "Nothing out of the ordinary. Just the usual city noise."

Me ri leaned closer, her eyes searching his face with intuitive concern. She did not have gadgets or physical strength, but her spiritual sensitivity was sharper than any machine Cypher could build. She reached out and touched his sleeve gently, her fingers hovering near where the rings were hidden. Me ri said: "You look pale. Are you sure you are okay?"

Do hyun forced a reassuring smile, hoping it looked genuine. He wanted to believe her worry was unfounded, that this was just a normal night among friends. The laughter of the surrounding crowd seemed to swell, creating a bubble of normalcy that he desperately wanted to stay inside. Okasaki laughed loudly at a joke Cypher made, slapping the table with a heavy hand. The vibration traveled through the wood, but Do hyun felt a different kind of vibration beneath his feet.

It started as a subtle shift in the air pressure. The shadows beneath the tables seemed to stretch slightly longer than the light sources allowed. Do hyun glanced around, his instincts prickling. The neon signs flickered once, then stabilized, but the pattern felt rhythmic, like a heartbeat. He tightened his grip on the cup, the heat seeping into his palms. He tried to convince himself it was just an electrical issue common in this old part of the city.

Cypher asked: "Did you feel that fluctuation?"

Yoo han nodded slowly, his hand moving discreetly toward his pocket where he kept his own monitoring tool. Yoo han said: "The readings just spiked. It is not a power surge."

Okasaki stopped chewing, his expression shifting from jovial to serious instantly. He placed his skewer down and scanned the perimeter, his muscles tensing under his jacket. Okasaki said: "I do not like this. The crowd is too quiet all of a sudden."

Do hyun looked around and realized Okasaki was right. The chatter had died down significantly, replaced by a low hum that seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere. The shadows in the alleyways between the stalls began to swirl, defying the direction of the wind. Do hyun felt the rings on his fingers grow cold, icy cold, as if they were drawing heat from his body. He pulled his hands back into his lap, away from the table.

Me ri suddenly grabbed Do hyun's arm, her grip tight and trembling. Her eyes were wide, staring into the darkness beyond the reach of the streetlights. Her voice dropped to a whisper, filled with genuine fear. Me ri said: "Something feels wrong tonight."

Do hyun looked at her, seeing the terror in her eyes that mirrored his own internal alarm. He wanted to tell her to let go and run, but he knew there was nowhere to go. The atmosphere had shifted from casual to predatory in a matter of seconds. The air grew heavy, making it difficult to breathe. The neon signs above them buzzed louder, the sound grating against their ears.

Do hyun said: "Stay close to me. All of you."

Cypher stood up quickly, holding his device high. The screen was flashing red, displaying chaotic patterns that made no logical sense. Cypher said: "The energy signature is off the charts. It is surrounding us."

Yoo han stood as well, positioning himself between the group and the darkest alley. He spoke calmly, trying to maintain order despite the rising panic. Yoo han said: "We need to move. Now."

Okasaki pushed his chair back, the metal screeching against the pavement. He cracked his knuckles, ready for a physical confrontation even though he did not know what they were facing. Okasaki said: "Let them come. I am not running."

Do hyun stood up slowly, his heart pounding against his ribs. The rings were vibrating again, stronger than before, sending pain shooting up his arms. He could feel something waking up inside him, a dormant power responding to the threat. The shadows at the edge of the market began to detach themselves from the walls, taking on solid, humanoid forms. They did not have faces, only voids where features should be.

Me ri asked: "What are those things?"

Do hyun did not answer immediately. He stepped in front of her, shielding her from the approaching darkness. He knew these were not ordinary shadows. They were scouts, sent to test the seals that bound him. The streetlights above began to flicker violently, casting the scene into a strobe like chaos. The warmth of the food and the friendship vanished, replaced by the cold bite of impending violence.

Do hyun said: "Do not look at them directly."

The hum grew louder, vibrating in their teeth and bones. The crowd of ordinary humans seemed frozen, unaware of the supernatural threat encroaching upon them, protected by the Veil but still in danger. Do hyun clenched his fists, the metal bands digging into his skin. He prayed the seals would hold, that he would not have to reveal his true nature in front of everyone. But the darkness was pressing in, hungry and impatient.

Cypher asked: "Why are the lights behaving like this?"

Before Do hyun could answer, the buzz of the neon signs reached a piercing crescendo. The blue light from Cypher's device shattered spontaneously, sending sparks flying onto the table. The darkness surged forward, swallowing the light from the stalls one by one. Do hyun watched in horror as the source of illumination died sequentially, moving toward their table.

Yoo han said: "Brace yourselves."

The last remaining streetlight above their section of the market sputtered. For a brief second, Do hyun saw the shadowy figures standing just inches away from Okasaki, their void like faces turned toward him. Then, the bulb exploded. Darkness fell across the entire block simultaneously, plunging them into an absolute blackness that felt heavy and suffocating. In the void, Do hyun heard a low, guttural laugh that did not belong to any human throat. The ordinary mask had fallen, and the night belonged to the shadows.
