Chapter 1 - The Contract Marriage

Rahat had always believed that love should be natural, not forced. He was the kind of person who valued freedom more than anything else. His life revolved around his career, his ambitions, and the independence he had built for himself.

Marriage was never part of his immediate plans.

But his parents thought differently.

One evening, after returning from work, Rahat noticed an unusual silence in the house. His mother was sitting quietly in the living room, and his father looked unusually serious.

Rahat frowned slightly.

"Why is everyone so quiet? Did something happen?"

His father took a deep breath before speaking.

"We have arranged your marriage."

Rahat froze for a moment, then laughed nervously.

"Very funny, Dad. Now tell me the real problem."

But no one laughed.

Slowly, the truth sank in.

"You're serious?" Rahat asked.

His mother gently said,

"The girl is very good. Her name is Neela. We believe she will be perfect for you."

Rahat stood up in frustration.

"I told you many times. I'm not ready for marriage."

Then his father said something unexpected.

"It's not exactly a normal marriage… it's a contract."

Rahat looked confused.

"A contract?"

His father explained that Neela's family was facing serious financial and social problems. To protect their reputation and solve some complicated matters, they needed this marriage to happen.

The agreement was simple.

They would stay married for one year. After that, if they wished, they could quietly divorce.

No obligations.

No expectations.

Just one year.

After hours of arguments and silence, Rahat finally agreed—only because he could not refuse his parents.

But in his heart, he made one thing clear.

He would never truly accept this girl as his wife.

The Wedding

The wedding ceremony was simple yet beautiful.

Lights decorated the house, relatives filled the rooms, and soft music played in the background.

Neela sat quietly on the stage, dressed in a red bridal sari.

She looked beautiful… but there was something sad in her eyes.

When Rahat first saw her, he paused for a moment.

She wasn't what he expected.

She looked calm… graceful… and strangely strong.

But he quickly looked away.

This was just a contract.

Nothing more.

The First Night

That night, the silence between them was heavy.

Neela stood near the window, holding the edge of her sari nervously.

Finally she spoke softly.

"You don't have to worry."

Rahat looked up.

"I know this is just a contract marriage."

Rahat's eyes widened slightly.

"You know?"

Neela nodded.

"My father told me everything."

She smiled faintly.

"So you don't have to feel uncomfortable. I won't force any relationship on you."

For the first time, Rahat didn't know what to say.

He had expected anger… complaints… maybe tears.

But not this calm acceptance.

Living Together… Yet Apart

Days turned into weeks.

Weeks turned into months.

Even though they lived under the same roof, Rahat and Neela were like strangers.

Rahat spent most of his time working.

Neela quietly managed the household.

Every morning breakfast was ready.

His clothes were neatly arranged.

His mother slowly recovered from illness—thanks to Neela's constant care.

But Neela never asked for anything in return.

Not attention.

Not affection.

Not even friendship.

The Night That Changed Something

One night Rahat returned home extremely late.

He looked exhausted.

As he entered the living room, he saw Neela sitting on the sofa, half asleep.

She immediately stood up.

"You're late. Did you eat dinner?"

Rahat shook his head.

Without another word, Neela went to the kitchen and brought warm food.

As Rahat ate quietly, he noticed something strange.

Neela had been waiting for him all night.

"Why didn't you sleep?" Rahat asked.

Neela smiled softly.

"I just wanted to make sure you came home safely."

Something inside Rahat's heart moved slightly.

Jealousy

One day Rahat came home earlier than usual.

As he entered the house, he heard Neela laughing.

It was the first time he had heard her laugh like that.

She was talking to one of his cousins.

For some strange reason, Rahat felt uncomfortable.

Why was she laughing so freely with someone else… but always so distant with him?

That night Rahat couldn't sleep.

For the first time, he realized something shocking.

He was jealous.

The Truth

One evening Rahat accidentally overheard Neela talking to her father on the phone.

Her father sounded worried.

"If you're unhappy there, come back home."

Neela replied gently,

"No, Baba. They are very kind to me."

"But Rahat doesn't love you."

There was a long silence.

Then Neela said quietly,

"I didn't marry him for love. I married him for you."

Rahat stood frozen outside the door.

Those words hit him harder than anything else.

For the first time, he saw the reality.

Neela had sacrificed her happiness… without ever complaining.

The Final Day

The one-year contract was almost over.

The divorce papers were ready.

That night Neela placed the documents on the table.

Her voice was calm, but her hands were slightly trembling.

"Tomorrow we can sign these… and everything will end."

Rahat stared at the papers.

Suddenly the idea of losing her felt unbearable.

The quiet mornings.

The warm tea.

The soft smile.

The way she cared for everyone.

How had she become so important?

Slowly Rahat stood up.

"What if I don't sign?"

Neela looked shocked.

"What?"

Rahat stepped closer.

"The contract said one year."

He looked directly into her eyes.

"But my heart didn't sign that contract."

Tears slowly filled Neela's eyes.

"Are you saying this out of pity?"

Rahat gently held her hand.

"No."

His voice was soft but certain.

"I'm saying this because somewhere along the way… I fell in love with my contract wife."

For a moment, the world felt silent.

Then Neela finally smiled through her tears.

And for the first time since their wedding…

They truly became husband and wife.
