Chapter 18 - Chapter 18 - The First Taste of War

The forest surrounding the ruined chapel had become a shadowed nightmare. Trees twisted unnaturally, their roots merging with the darkness, and the ground itself seemed alive with black tendrils. Gabriel stood at the center of it all, Nyx towering beside him, his silver eyes glowing faintly in the moonlight.

This time, the enemy was coming prepared.

From the horizon, shapes began to emerge—lesser demons, but dozens of them, armed with infernal weapons and aura-infused armor. They were emissaries from Hell, sent to test the rumors of a cursed immortal growing in power on Earth. Each demon radiated aggression and malice, sensing Gabriel's growing army of shadows and thinking him a threat to the natural order.

Gabriel tilted his head, expression calm.

"So… Hell sends soldiers," he said softly. "Good. Let's see how ready they are."

Nyx growled, a low rumble that vibrated through the forest. The shadow army rippled behind Gabriel, forming an organized line. Wolves, serpents, humanoid shadow warriors, and spikes of black energy moved with terrifying synchronization. This was no longer just survival—it was strategy.

The first wave of demons charged. Their energy blades cut through the air, and fire erupted from the ground where their boots struck. But the shadows moved faster. Tendrils shot up from the forest floor, wrapping around the demons' legs and pulling them into the air. Wolves lunged, serpents struck, and humanoid shadows blocked incoming attacks.

Gabriel felt the familiar surge of pain from Alex's ongoing battle. It pulsed through him, violent and relentless. But instead of weakening him, it fueled him, and he poured it into the shadows. They evolved instantly, growing sharper, stronger, faster, anticipating every strike from the demons.

"You fight hard," Gabriel whispered. "But the shadows learn… and they never forget."

A demon swung its sword in a wide arc, cleaving through a group of shadow wolves—but the creatures split, multiplied, and reformed behind him. Another attempted to throw fire at Gabriel directly, but shadow serpents blocked the flames, absorbing the energy and redirecting it as black lightning toward their attackers.

Gabriel stepped forward, silver eyes blazing. His hand moved in precise motions, and the shadows responded, forming a wall of spikes and blades. A single command sent dozens of humanoid shadows leaping forward, striking in unison. The demons staggered, some falling to their knees, overwhelmed by coordinated attacks they could not predict.

Nyx howled, leaping through the battlefield with the grace of a predator, tearing into demons with massive claws. Every movement of the shadow army reflected Gabriel's intent—he was no longer just commanding; he was thinking through them.

A surge of pain from Alex's fight crashed into him, stronger than ever. Gabriel staggered slightly but caught himself immediately, feeding the agony directly into the shadows. Tendrils grew longer, serpents multiplied, spikes erupted, and the battlefield became a living storm of darkness.

Gabriel's voice cut through the chaos, calm and deadly:

"Every attack you make… every strike you land… only makes us stronger. Hell cursed me to suffer, and now… I am beyond your reach."

The remaining demons hesitated, realizing too late that this was no ordinary immortal. Gabriel's army moved as one, evolving mid-battle, adapting, and learning instantly. The forest itself seemed to respond, roots twisting and merging with shadows, creating traps, barriers, and weapons out of thin air.

The wave of demons collapsed under the coordinated assault. Some fled, some were bound, and others fell unconscious. Gabriel's silver eyes glimmered in the moonlight, Nyx at his side, shadow creatures surrounding him like a dark tide.

Gabriel exhaled slowly, letting the silence settle over the battlefield.

"This…" he whispered, voice low, almost reverent, "is only the beginning. Pain… suffering… it builds. It teaches. And I… I will be unstoppable."

Nyx growled, circling him like a living shadow sentinel. Gabriel's army had proven itself in combat for the first time. And far away, in the burning skies of Hell, Alex felt it—the surge of power, the growth of his brother, and the first tangible sign that Gabriel was no longer merely cursed… he was becoming a force that even Hell would fear.

Gabriel raised a hand, shadows twisting around him in a storm of black energy.

"And soon," he whispered, eyes glinting with silver fire, "Hell itself will know the cost of underestimating me."
