The tree had grown.

Three years ago, when Arslan had first pointed at this spot and told the servants to plant, it had been a sapling. Thin. Uncertain. The kind of thing that might or might not survive. Now its branches spread wide, casting shade over a circle of grass where the rabbits sometimes gathered and where, on this particular afternoon, a boy sat with a notebook and a pencil and the weight of everything he had ever learned.

Arslan was eight. Nearly nine. In the first life, at this age, he had been learning to read bruises. Learning to measure the time between slaps. Learning that God's name was a weapon and he was the target.

Now he sat under a tree he had planted, on land he owned, in an empire he was building, and he wrote.

And that, he thought, was the point.

But under the neem tree, in a cheap notebook, the blueprint for everything waited.

And somewhere in the darkness, a boy who carried a library in his bones smiled and kept walking.
