Seren's POV
Voices wake her.
Three male voices, arguing so loudly that Seren's first instinct is to flinch away from the noise. But moving hurts. Everything hurts. Her entire body feels like someone replaced all her bones with broken glass.
She opens her eyes slowly, squinting against the soft afternoon light coming through a window.
The room is small and warm, with walls made of dark wood and shelves filled with strange bottles and dried plants. She's in a bed. An actual real bed with soft sheets and pillows that smell like lavender. The last bed she slept in was in her mother's pack house, and that feels like a lifetime ago.
Her wounds are bandaged.
Clean bandages too, wrapped carefully around her arms and legs. Someone has been taking care of her. The thought makes her stomach twist with complicated feelings. She's not used to being cared for.
The voices get louder.
"She's ours," a dark voice says. Harsh. Angry. The scarred Alpha from the clearing. She remembers him immediately. The black wolf. The cold gray eyes. The way he looked at her like she was a problem that needed solving.
"She's bonded to all three of us," a smoother voice replies. More controlled. The golden-brown wolf. The calculating one who examined her rejection mark like she was a mathematical equation.
"Which means we stop arguing about who gets what and start figuring out how we keep her alive," a younger voice says. Frustrated but not mean. The red wolf. The one who caught her in the clearing, and there's something about him that felt almost kind.
Seren tries to sit up.
Pain lances through her chest, and she gasps. The movement must be loud enough for them to hear because the arguing stops abruptly. There's a moment of complete silence, and then footsteps. Multiple sets of footsteps moving quickly.
The door opens.
But it's not the three Alphas who enter. It's an old woman with silver hair and dark eyes that seem to know every secret Seren has ever kept. The woman is tall and moves like she's been moving the same way for a thousand years and will keep moving that way for a thousand more.
"Ah, you're awake," the old woman says, and her voice is surprisingly warm. "Drink this."
She holds out a cup of tea that's steaming. The smell is strange. Herbs and honey and something else that Seren can't identify.
Seren doesn't move.
"It will help with the pain," the old woman says, settling into a chair beside the bed. "And with the bond integration. Your body is trying to process three separate connections all at once. The tea will make it easier."
"Who are you," Seren asks, and her voice sounds like someone dragged it through gravel.
"My name is Mara. I keep the histories." The old woman, Mara, holds the tea closer. "Drink, child. We have much to discuss and your body needs the strength."
Something about the way Mara says it makes Seren obey. She takes the cup carefully and drinks. The tea is warm and sweet and tastes like it's healing her from the inside out. The pain in her chest eases slightly.
"Better?" Mara asks.
Seren nods.
"The three Alphas are outside the door, arguing about whether they're allowed to come in yet. They're bonded to you now, and that makes them protective to the point of absurdity. But they'll wait until I tell them it's time." Mara settles back in her chair with a knowing smile. "Now, I have a story to tell you. And you need to listen very carefully because your life depends on understanding what I'm about to explain."
Seren's chest tightens. The bonds throb with anxiety that isn't entirely her own.
"A thousand years ago," Mara begins, "the Moon Goddess created a female unlike any other. She was born with the power to command the mightiest Alphas. To unite kingdoms that had been at war for centuries. To bring peace where there had only been violence. This female was called a Luna Queen."
"That sounds like a fairy tale," Seren whispers.
"Most histories do, when they're told as legends instead of facts," Mara says calmly. "The Luna Queen bonded with three Alphas. Three rivals who would have destroyed each other without her. Together, the four of them united the entire northern continent. They created laws that protected the weak. They established trade routes that made all the packs prosperous. For two hundred years, there was peace."
Seren doesn't want to ask. But she has to. "What happened to her?"
Mara's expression grows sad. "The Alphas who came after her became jealous. They saw three of the most powerful males in the world bending to the will of one female, and it terrified them. So they made a choice. They murdered the Luna Queen in her sleep. They murdered her three mates. They hunted down her children and killed them too. Then they burned every record of her existence, trying to erase her from history."
The tea suddenly tastes bitter in Seren's mouth.
"The Alphas who did this swore an oath," Mara continues. "They said no Luna Queen would ever be allowed to exist again. They hunted down every female who showed signs of the old power. The Moon Goddess herself swore that she would never create another unless the world was ready."
"And the world is ready now?" Seren asks, though she already knows the answer.
"No," Mara says simply. "But it needs you anyway."
She stands and moves toward the window, looking out at the forest beyond. "The world is gathering darkness, child. Rogue armies grow larger every season. The southern human kingdoms prepare for invasion. Pack unity fractures more with each passing year. There are forces moving that your kind doesn't even know to fear yet. And unless something changes, the northern territories will fall."
Seren feels the bonds tighten in her chest. The three Alphas outside the door are listening. They know what Mara is saying.
"Three bonds mean three mates," Mara says, turning back to face her. "Three of the most powerful Alphas in the northern territories. Three males who have spent their entire lives in opposition to each other. And one female meant to unite them."
"I can't," Seren says immediately. "I'm wolfless. I can't shift. I can't command anyone. I'm nothing."
"Your wolf sleeps because she's too powerful to wake safely," Mara says, and her eyes seem to glow in the afternoon light. "Not because you're weak. Because you're stronger than any of them could ever imagine. Your bloodline carries the mark of the First Queens, and that power has been dormant in your family for a thousand years. It's been waiting. Waiting for you to be born. Waiting for you to be ready."
The bonds suddenly flare hot in Seren's chest.
Not painful this time. But demanding. Pulling at her. Three separate connections insisting that she acknowledge their existence.
"The three Alphas outside that door," Mara continues. "They don't know yet what they've bonded to. When they understand, when they truly comprehend that they're meant to stand together instead of fight each other, they'll either become the most formidable force the north has ever seen or they'll tear each other apart trying to control you."
"Which will it be," Seren asks.
"That depends on you," Mara says.
A knock comes at the door. Sharp and authoritative.
"She's awake," a voice says. The scarred Alpha. Kael. The name comes to her through the bonds, through some connection she doesn't fully understand yet.
"Come in," Mara calls.
The door opens and all three Alphas enter.
Kael first, his scarred face hard and unreadable. Then Theron, his amber eyes assessing everything about her all at once. Then Ryker, whose green eyes light up when he sees her awake.
And in that moment, Seren understands something that makes her blood run cold.
They're not bonded to her because they chose her. They're bonded to her because the Moon Goddess chose it. Because fate chose it. Because she's a Luna Queen whether she wants to be or not.
She's a tool. A weapon meant to unite them.
She's not a person anymore. She's a prophecy.
Ryker moves toward the bed, his expression full of relief and something that looks almost like love.
But before he can reach her, Seren feels something shift inside her chest.
The bonds suddenly pulse with power that isn't hers. Power that's ancient and terrible and wonderful all at once. Her eyes glow silver for just a moment. The air in the room becomes thick and heavy.
Every single Alpha drops to one knee.
Not because they want to. Because they have to. Because the power radiating from Seren is forcing their submission.
Mara watches with knowing eyes.
"Oh," she says softly. "It's beginning already. Faster than I expected."
Seren looks at her hands and sees them glowing faintly silver.
She doesn't understand what's happening. She doesn't understand any of this.
But she understands one thing with absolute clarity.
Everything has changed. And there's no going back.
