Chapter 10 - The Handler Watches

Silas's POV

Silas sits in his office and reads through Aria's latest reports with the satisfaction of a man watching his plan come together perfectly.

The security codes are documented. The patrol schedules are mapped. The weak points in the Blackthorn Pack's defenses have been identified and catalogued. The personal files of the alpha have been photographed and analyzed.

She has done better than expected.

Much better.

He pulls up the surveillance footage from the Blackthorn Pack house. Hidden cameras that Aria activated when she arrived. He watches Kael touch her face with tenderness that looks almost painful. He watches the alpha hold her like she is the only thing keeping him alive.

Silas smiles.

Love is the ultimate weakness. Silas has always known this. It is why he never allows himself to feel it. Why he views emotion as a disease that weakens those around him. Why he collects broken people like Aria and teaches them that feelings are just tools to be manipulated.

And Aria has weaponized love perfectly.

She has made Kael believe in something he swore did not exist. She has cracked open the armor he spent fourteen years building. She has positioned herself so completely in his life that removing her will shatter him.

When the Council moves against him, when the false evidence is released, when his pack begins to question his sanity, Kael will not just lose his power.

He will lose his mind.

Because the woman he trusted, the woman he loves, will be revealed as the very weapon designed to destroy him.

Silas pulls out his communication device and makes a call.

A voice answers on the second ring. Guarded. Careful.

"The infiltration is proceeding perfectly," Silas says. "The alpha is completely bonded to the operative. The pack has accepted her. She has access to all sensitive information."

He pauses as the voice on the other end gives instructions.

"Yes, the false evidence is being prepared," Silas continues. "The yacht fire investigation will be reopened and Kael will be implicated in his parents' death. It will be brilliant. No one will question it because the operative herself will have documented his secret investigation into the Council's involvement."

Another pause.

"Raven is prepared for his coordinated attack," Silas says. "Three days from now, the borders will be tested. The pack will fracture under the pressure. And when the full moon gathering begins, the Council will present the evidence that shatters everything Kael believes about himself."

He ends the call and sets the device down.

But something nags at him.

Something in the surveillance footage bothers him. In the way Aria watches Kael when she thinks no one is looking. In the hesitation he sees before she sends certain reports. In the way her hands shake slightly when she documents information that could hurt him.

It is almost like she is beginning to feel something real.

Silas leans back in his chair and considers this possibility.

No. It is not possible.

Aria was trained from the moment the Council recruited her. He personally oversaw her conditioning. He removed every piece of her that could potentially become a liability. He taught her to view emotion as a weapon and attachment as a tool.

She is incapable of genuine feeling.

But just to be certain, Silas decides something.

He will visit the Blackthorn Pack at their full moon gathering. He will see this situation for himself. He will look Kael in the eyes and confirm that the alpha is completely vulnerable. He will assess Aria to make sure she has not become compromised.

And if she has become a liability instead of an asset, he will deal with her himself.

Silas stands and walks to his window.

From his office high above the Council headquarters, he can see the territories spread out below like a game board. Blackthorn territory to the north. Moonstone territory to the west. Raven's pack positioned perfectly to strike when the signal is given.

All the pieces are in place.

All the players are where they need to be.

The only variable is Aria.

And variables, Silas has learned over his long career, are what destroy careful plans.

He opens a secure file on his computer and reviews her psychological profile. The girl who felt invisible her entire life. The girl who was rejected by her own pack. The girl who the Council taught that the only way to survive was to become a weapon.

On paper, she is perfect for this mission.

But Silas knows something that most people do not.

Broken people have a tendency to try to heal themselves.

And sometimes that healing involves choosing love over survival.

He makes a new decision.

When he arrives at the full moon gathering, he will not just observe.

He will remind Aria exactly what she is and what she will lose if she betrays the Council.

He will threaten her with things worse than death because death is merciful and Silas is not merciful.

He will show her that love is indeed a weapon, but it cuts both directions and she cannot protect the alpha without destroying herself in the process.

Silas sends a message to Aria.

"I am attending the full moon gathering. We need to discuss something face to face. And Aria, you should know that I can see everything. I can see your hesitation. I can feel your weakness. And I will deal with it personally if necessary."

He does not wait for her response.

He begins packing for his trip.

Because for the first time in this operation, Silas feels something that resembles uncertainty.

And uncertainty means he needs to be present to control the situation personally.

The game board is shifting slightly.

And Silas does not tolerate surprises.

By the time he arrives at the Blackthorn Pack gathering, everything is going to be very clear.

And either Aria will remember what she was trained to be, or she will discover what it costs to betray the Council.

There is no middle ground.

There is no escape.

There is only the choice between destroying the man she loves or being destroyed herself.

And Silas is very confident about which choice she will make.

Because he designed her that way.
