Chapter 3 - THE MOMENT EVERYTHING SHATTERS

DUAL POV (EDEN & KAEL)

EDEN

The elder's voice is asking her to step forward for the bonding ritual, but Eden barely hears the words. She's focused on not falling apart.

Kael stands at the other end of the sacred space, completely still, completely composed. His gray eyes are ice. His face is a mask. He looks at her like she's nothing. Like she's less than nothing.

At least that makes this easier.

If he's cold, she can be colder.

If he doesn't care, she doesn't have to either.

Eden takes a breath and moves toward him, her white dress sweeping across the ground. Thousands of eyes are on her. She can feel them like physical pressure. She keeps her face blank because showing anything would be admitting that her father broke her with a single conversation three weeks ago.

Kael extends his hand for the ritual.

Eden reaches for it.

The moment their skin touches, the world explodes.

It's not a gentle spark. It's not romantic or soft or anything she could have prepared for. It's violent. It's claiming. It's like lightning just struck directly into her chest and rewired every single part of her existence in a single breath.

Eden feels something inside her snap into place.

A connection. A bond. A rope made of pure fire that ties her directly to Kael and wraps around her soul.

And it comes with his feelings flooding into her mind like a tsunami.

His shock hits her first. Raw and profound. He wasn't expecting this either. He didn't know this was possible.

Then his panic comes crashing down. It's desperate and terrified and so powerful that Eden gasps because she can feel his wolf trying to break free. She can feel his beast clawing at the inside of his skin, demanding to get closer to her, demanding to claim her right here in front of both packs.

His wolf recognizes her.

The realization comes with a clarity that makes her knees weak. This is her mate. This is the person her soul has been waiting for her entire life. This is real and true and meant.

For one perfect second, everything aligns.

The bond sings between them. It feels like coming home. It feels like finally understanding what she's been missing her whole life. It feels like all the pain and loneliness and being invisible suddenly has a purpose.

She's his mate.

He's her mate.

This is forever

KAEL

The moment their hands touch, Kael's entire world shatters.

The fated mate bond hits him like a physical blow. Not romantic. Not gentle. A force of nature that tears through his carefully constructed walls like they're made of paper.

His wolf surfaces immediately, completely wild, demanding to be released. The beast recognizes her as its true mate, and it doesn't care about walls or philosophy or three hundred years of lessons about the danger of love.

It wants to claim her.

Now.

In front of everyone.

Kael's eyes flash gold. He can feel them changing, can feel his beast pushing through his human skin like it's determined to break free. His body goes rigid because all his control is suddenly fighting against every instinct he has.

She's his mate.

The realization is absolute and undeniable. Her scent. Her presence. Her soul is tied to his now through a bond he can feel wrapping around both of them like chains made of fire.

For one perfect second, it feels right.

For one perfect second, he can feel her through the connection, and her emotions are matching his. She feels it too. She knows. She understands that this is real and true and meant.

His wolf wants to howl. It wants to claim her in front of both packs. It wants to announce to every living creature that she's his and he's hers and nothing will ever change that.

Then his human mind screams.

Love is a weapon.

His father's voice cuts through the gold haze like a blade of ice. The reminder of every person he's watched break because they let themselves feel something. The memory of every scar on his body. The knowledge that accepting this bond means vulnerability he can't afford.

She's the enemy's daughter.

She could destroy him.

Kael's eyes flash back to gray. The effort of forcing his wolf down, of locking his beast back in its cage, feels like it's tearing him apart. His entire body is shaking with the strain of it.

But he does it.

His face goes completely blank.

Because if he lets himself accept what the bond is telling him, if he admits that she matters, then he's lost everything he's spent three hundred years building.

EDEN

She can feel him pulling back.

Not physically. Not yet. But through the bond, she can feel him retreating. She can feel him fighting against the connection that just bound them together. She can feel him trying to build walls against something that's supposed to be absolute and unbreakable.

He's rejecting it.

He's rejecting her.

No. No, he can't. The bond is real. She felt it. She felt him feel it. For one second, they were completely aligned. Completely certain. Completely sure that this was meant.

But now she can feel him pulling away, and the pain of it is worse than anything she's ever experienced.

It's like claws ripping through her chest.

It's like the universe just cut a piece of her soul away and threw it to the ground.

KAEL

She's reaching for him, and all he can think is that he can't do this.

He can't accept the bond.

He can't be vulnerable.

He can't love something that could destroy him.

So he steps back.

He steps away from her outstretched hand like she's burning him. Like touching her again would be the end of everything.

"No," he says.

The word comes out cold and absolute and final. It echoes across the clearing like a death sentence.

Every wolf in the gathering feels it at the exact same moment.

The rejection.

The deliberate, vicious severing of a fated mate bond by the one person who should have been protecting it instead of shattering it.

EDEN

The pain is so intense that Eden thinks she might die from it.

It's not physical pain, but it feels more real than anything that's ever happened to her body. The bond that just tied them together is being torn apart by his own hand, and the agony of it is ripping her open from the inside.

She can feel him through the bond still, can feel his anguish and his panic and his desperate certainty that this is the right choice, even though it's destroying them both.

But his human mind has won.

His walls have held.

And she's standing alone in front of thousands of witnesses, rejected by her mate at the altar, while her entire existence screams that this is wrong.

The elder is still talking. The ceremony is continuing because it has to. Because stopping would admit that everything is already broken.

Kael is looking at her again, and this time his eyes are completely closed off. But beneath the ice, she can see the anguish. She can see that he's in pain too. She can see that rejecting her cost him something.

But he's still not taking it back.

KAEL

The moment she disappears from sight, Kael feels the mate bond twist inside his chest like broken glass.

He can still feel her through it. He can feel her pain. He can feel her confusion and humiliation and the desperate hope that he might change his mind even though she knows he won't.

Thorne is standing next to him, looking at him like he's the biggest idiot alive.

But Kael just stares at the empty space where Eden was standing, and he realizes with absolute clarity that rejecting her might be the biggest mistake of his entire life.

The only problem is that taking it back now would destroy everything he's worked for.

So he stands there, completely still, while the bond between them burns like poison in his veins, and he watches the woman who's supposed to be his mate disappear toward Ironfang territory.

He's already lost her, and the ceremony hasn't even finished.

somewhere in the crowd, Mira watches Kael with an expression that looks dangerously close to satisfaction.
