Griphook sat hunched over the parchment-coverd desk in his private office deep inside Gringotts Bank. Without warning, a ripple of air shimmered beside him—and Bubbles appeared in a burst of silver light. Her sudden presence made the room feel several degrees colder.
Griphook let out a startled cry, toppling backwards off his stool and crashing to the floor. His quill skittered across the stone tiles.
"Mistress Double Bubble! What brings you here?" he gasped, wide eyes locked on her.
"Rise, Griphook," Bubbles said, her voice smooth but unyielding.
Griphook scrambled to his feet, nearly knocking over a stack of gold bar inventories in the process.
"I'm sure you're aware of who I am," Bubbles said, folding her arms behind her back.
"There isn't a single goblin in Gringotts who isn't aware of the lineage of Vault Zero," he answered quickly, chest heaving slightly.
"Excellent. I'm glad you remember your place."
Griphook swallowed and trembled with awe. "Double Bubble… is there anything I can do for you?"
"Actually," she said, glancing at him, "I go by the name Bubbles now."
He straightened instantly. "Of course, Mistress Bubbles. Is there anything I can do for you?"
"The Cross Lineage has a new heir known as Raven Cross. She is currently on her way to Gringotts with the child Harry Potter, the one who survived Voldemort."
Griphook blinked, then trembled harder. "Harry Potter is with a member of the Cross Lineage? Is there anything I can do to help them?"
"That's why I like you, Griphook," Bubbles said with a faint smile. "You've always been quick on the uptake. She will be here soon, and I want you to personally receive her. You will treat her with the utmost respect and not give her any of the attitude that goblins are normally known for. Remember, the sole reason Gringotts exists is to serve and protect the needs of the Cross Lineage."
Griphook gave a stiff bow. "Of course, Mistress Bubbles."
"Miranda is personally involved in this. Don't let her down."
His eyes widened. "Miranda has awakened?"
"Of course. Raven Cross has already completed her first mission on behalf of Vault Zero. The Cross Lineage is active within the magical world once again. After you are done serving Raven, be sure to notify the rest of the goblins, as well as the other branches of Gringotts around the world, that the Cross Lineage is active again and that the problems plaguing the magical world will soon be addressed."
Griphook's voice was almost reverent. "Finally… some of the problems that have been plaguing the other magical communities around the world will be solved. Especially the trouble we're having in Japan at the Gringotts Bank branch there."
Bubbles' expression tightened. "What's going on?"
Then she waved her hand. "Never mind. Report that to Miranda and she will take care of it."
"Yes, Mistress Bubbles."
"Go out and personally greet them. Help Harry Potter access his family vault and inheritance. Make sure he gets anything he needs. And remember — you are to treat Raven Cross with the utmost respect."
"Yes, Mistress Bubbles."
Bubbles suddenly blinked and turned towards the wall. "Oh. She's here. I have to go."
With a flash of light, she vanished.
Griphook spun around and sprinted out of his office, moving faster than any goblin in polished robes had a right to. He reached the marble hall of the main lobby just as the heavy doors creaked open.
Raven stepped into Gringotts, her expression calm, as Harry followed closely behind her and Claire walked in behind them.
Griphook's eyes locked on the glowing Ring of the Cross on Raven's finger. He froze for only a split second, then rushed forward and bowed deeply at a perfect ninety-degree angle.
"You must be Raven Cross," he said, voice low and reverent.
The moment the name was spoken, every goblin in the massive bank turned at once. The sound of coins, the scratching of quills, and the whispers between goblin tellers stopped entirely.
Griphook immediately snapped his head toward the rest of the staff. "Back to work!"
They all jumped and scrambled back to their stations, working twice as fast now, heads down, hands moving.
Raven's lips curved up slightly in approval as she looked down at him. "May I have your name?"
"My name is Griphook. I am a personal liaison for Gringotts Bank. I have been instructed to help you find whatever you need, Mrs. Cross."
Harry looked up at Raven in confusion. "How come they seem to know you personally, Raven?"
Raven let out a quiet laugh. "I have personal connections with Gringotts Bank. Nothing you need to worry about, Harry."
