Chapter 12 - Chapter 12 – Sophia’s First Move

The next evening, Amara stood in front of the mirror in her small apartment, carefully adjusting the blue dress she had worn the night before. The fabric shimmered softly in the light, and her hair fell perfectly around her shoulders. She took a deep breath, trying to steady the nervous flutter in her stomach. Tonight would be even harder than yesterday. Sophia hadn't stopped thinking about her, and Amara could feel the weight of the previous evening pressing down on her. The car arrived promptly at six, just as Adrian had instructed. The driver opened the door, and Amara stepped in carefully, holding her small purse tightly. Adrian was already seated, looking calm as always. "Ready?" he asked quietly. Amara nodded. "As ready as I'll ever be." The car glided through the streets, the city lights reflecting in the windows. Every minute that passed made her heart beat faster. Adrian's hand brushed hers briefly under the dim light of the car, a silent reminder to stay composed. When they arrived at the mansion, the same tension greeted her as yesterday. The staff bowed politely, and the grand doors opened into the familiar hall. Sophia was already there, leaning against one of the walls with her phone in her hand, pretending to be occupied. The moment she saw Amara, her lips curved into a faint, calculating smile. "Ah, you're back," Sophia said smoothly, her tone sugary sweet but her eyes sharp. "Right on time." Amara forced a polite smile. "Good evening, Sophia." Sophia's smile widened just enough to unsettle her. "You're looking… very confident tonight." Amara raised an eyebrow slightly. "Thank you." Sophia stepped closer, speaking low enough so only Amara could hear. "I hope you're prepared. My father… he asks questions. And I know how to make them stick." Amara's stomach tightened. "What do you mean?" Sophia's eyes glinted dangerously. "I know which details of your life he hasn't heard. Which small truths you might slip. And I'll make sure they seem suspicious." Amara swallowed hard. "So you plan to expose me?" Sophia laughed softly. "Expose? No… not yet. Just plant doubts. Make him watch carefully. Make you sweat." Adrian, noticing the tension, stepped slightly closer to Amara. "Sophia," he said calmly, "enough." Sophia shrugged, still smiling. "Relax. I'm just giving her advice." Amara exhaled slowly, trying to keep her composure. She had anticipated this, but hearing it out loud made it real. The dinner started, and they took their seats at the long, polished table. Conversations began again, but Amara could feel Sophia's eyes on her every few seconds. The woman didn't speak much, but her glances were sharp, measuring, assessing every movement. Midway through the meal, a waiter brought out a document folder addressed to Adrian. Sophia immediately leaned forward with feigned interest. "Oh, Adrian, is that for your review tonight?" Adrian glanced at her calmly. "Yes." Sophia's gaze flicked toward Amara. "Would you like to help him? I'm sure someone of your… unique experience could be useful." Amara felt her pulse quicken. She forced a polite smile. "I'll try my best." Adrian gave her a subtle nod, silently instructing her to stay composed. The folder contained some business proposals. Adrian reviewed them carefully while Amara watched quietly, answering only when he asked her opinion. Sophia leaned slightly toward Amara, speaking just loud enough for her to hear. "You know, I think my father will notice if you hesitate, even once." Amara didn't flinch. "I'm aware." Sophia's eyes narrowed slightly. "Good. I hope you enjoy the challenge, because it will only get harder from here." The rest of the dinner passed in tense silence, punctuated by Sophia's occasional comments designed to unsettle her. Every question, every glance, made Amara more aware of the stakes. By the time the meal ended, she realized that surviving Sophia's subtle attacks was going to require more than composure—it would require strategy, clever thinking, and constant vigilance. As the car drove them home, Amara finally exhaled. "She's… worse than I expected," she admitted quietly. Adrian gave her a small, knowing smile. "That was only the beginning. Sophia tests everything. And she will not stop until she either wins… or fails." Amara clenched her hands lightly around her purse. "I need to be smarter than her." Adrian's gaze softened. "You are. But remember, you don't have to do it alone. I'm right here." Amara nodded slowly, feeling a mix of relief and fear. She had survived the first of Sophia's moves, but she knew the real game was only just beginning.

The tension in the night air felt heavier than the city lights outside the car window. Amara realized one clear truth: if she wanted to stay in Adrian's world, she would have to outsmart Sophia—and that meant the next move had to be hers.
