Chapter 3 - Chapter 3 — The First True Hunt

The dungeon air was thick with the lingering echo of the Iron Troll's roars, and Ethan staggered to his feet, limbs trembling with exhaustion. HP: 18/100, Stamina: 12/100, Skill Cooldown: 30s, the system's HUD reminded him of how close he had come to death. "I survived… barely… but I can't stop now. Every second I hesitate, I die," he thought, forcing his legs to carry him forward. The corridor ahead branched into twisting tunnels, and the faint glow of unknown creatures shimmered in the shadows. His hands still ached from his first devoured skill, yet a small spark of confidence lit within him. The dungeon was unforgiving, but the system had chosen him… and that meant he had a chance. A chance others in his rank could never have. "Maybe… maybe this is my path… my evolution," he whispered, heart pounding.

As he stepped deeper, the shadows shifted, revealing a pack of small, feral goblins armed with crude blades and jagged stones. (Ding) [Enemy Detected: Goblin Pack — 5 units] Their eyes glinted maliciously in the torchlight, and Ethan's pulse raced. "I… I can take them… can't I? I have to…" Each goblin moved like a predator, calculating, testing his nerves. His HUD blinked: Chances of Survival: 27%, HP: 18/100, Stamina: 11/100. "This is still… still too low," he thought, swallowing hard. He forced his fingers to clench into a fist, feeling the residual energy of the Skill Devour System flowing through him. Sparks of blue energy flickered faintly over his skin. (Ding) [New Skill Opportunity Detected: Goblin Agility] His heart skipped. "I… I can devour it, can't I? But the Troll… that power… it's different… dangerous… maybe I'm not ready," he thought, the unease twisting inside him. Yet hesitation was a luxury he could not afford.

The goblins lunged, and Ethan dodged, his movements sharper than humanly possible, his senses acutely aware of every twitch and motion. (Ding) [Skill Devour: Goblin Agility — Ready] "I… I have no choice," he murmured, pressing his hand forward as energy surged through him. The goblins' attacks were fast, but he adapted, countering each strike with a precise flick of his dagger. HP: 20/100, Stamina: 10/100, flashed as he landed a series of rapid strikes, feeling the devoured skill integrating into his body. Each heartbeat reverberated in his chest, a mixture of fear, exhilaration, and disbelief. "I… I'm becoming something… stronger… faster… better… but is it still me?" The system chimed again softly, almost teasing. (Ding) [Warning: Hidden System Parameter Detected] A pulse of unknown origin rippled through his mind, a quiet whisper of something forbidden, something the system had not yet revealed.

When the last goblin fell, Ethan sank to the floor, trembling with exhaustion, a thin layer of sweat mixing with dirt across his face. HP: 22/100, Stamina: 8/100, Skill Cooldown: 45s, the HUD read, and he shivered at how precariously close his life hung on such small numbers. "I survived… again… I'm… I'm actually surviving," he whispered, heart hammering. The dungeon's shadows seemed to shift around him, alive, as if aware of the new power coursing through him. The faint pulse in the system's code grew stronger, a subtle hum that promised danger, power, and secrets beyond comprehension. "I have to… get stronger… I have to survive… I can't let this system control me… but maybe… maybe I can use it…" With that thought, he rose again, blue energy faintly radiating from his hands, ready to continue deeper into the dungeon, unaware of the true trials the system and its hidden secret had in store for him.
