Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: The First Fall

The creature did not rush.

It did not roar.

It simply stepped forward.

And that was enough.

The moment its massive foot touched the sand, the desert floor collapsed like fragile glass. A shockwave rolled outward, throwing soldiers off their feet.

"OPEN FIRE!" the commander screamed.

Gunfire erupted instantly.

Dozens of rifles unleashed a storm of bullets toward the towering creature.

The result was horrifying.

The bullets stopped midair.

They froze like tiny metal insects trapped in invisible glass.

Then, slowly…

They melted.

Ethan's breath caught in his throat.

"That's impossible…"

The creature tilted its head, studying the soldiers as if they were curious animals.

Then it raised one long arm.

A ripple of dark energy pulsed outward.

The first line of soldiers vanished.

Not exploded.

Not burned.

Just… gone.

Where they had stood seconds ago, only empty sand remained.

Panic erupted.

"RETREAT!"

"MOVE! MOVE!"

The military formation collapsed instantly.

But the creature didn't chase them.

Instead, it turned its glowing eyes toward Ethan again.

The archaeologist felt his legs shaking.

Why was it looking at him?

Why him?

The woman in black tactical gear grabbed his shoulder violently.

"Dr. Vale! We need to get back to the helicopter!"

But Ethan could barely hear her.

Because the creature spoke again.

Inside his mind.

"You understand the symbols."

Ethan's eyes widened.

"What…?"

The voice echoed again.

"You are the key."

Before Ethan could react, the creature extended one finger toward him.

A thin beam of blue light shot forward.

The woman shoved Ethan aside.

"DOWN!"

The beam struck the sand where he had been standing.

For a split second, nothing happened.

Then the sand disappeared, leaving a perfectly round hole descending into darkness.

Ethan stared in horror.

"That beam just erased matter…"

"Move!" the woman shouted.

She dragged him toward the helicopter.

Behind them, the sky began to change.

The doorway behind the creature glowed brighter.

And shapes began emerging from the light.

Hundreds of them.

Some flew.

Some crawled.

Some slithered across the sand.

The invasion had begun.

Inside the helicopter, chaos exploded.

"Take off!" the commander yelled.

The pilot slammed the controls.

The helicopter lifted violently into the air.

Below them, the desert battlefield was already lost.

More creatures poured out of the door.

Some were small and fast.

Others towered like living mountains.

Ethan pressed his face against the window.

"What are they…?"

The woman beside him reloaded her pistol calmly.

"Aliens."

Ethan shook his head slowly.

"No."

He pointed toward the symbols carved into the massive door.

"Those symbols are older than human civilization."

She looked at him.

"So?"

Ethan swallowed.

"That means they've been here before."

Silence filled the helicopter.

Then the radio crackled.

"Command to all units. Code Black confirmed."

The commander grabbed the microphone.

"This is Delta Recon. The structure is hostile. Repeat—hostile lifeforms emerging."

The response came immediately.

"Understood."

A pause.

Then three chilling words.

"Initiate Protocol Ragnarok."

Ethan looked up sharply.

"What does that mean?"

The commander avoided his eyes.

"It means we're going to destroy the door."

The helicopter climbed higher into the sky.

But something was wrong.

The instruments began flickering.

The pilot cursed.

"I'm losing navigation!"

Outside the window, the sky twisted strangely.

Dark clouds spiraled above the massive door like a forming storm.

Then Ethan saw it.

One of the flying creatures.

It was enormous.

Its wings stretched nearly fifty meters across.

And it was heading straight toward them.

"Incoming!" the gunner shouted.

The helicopter turret opened fire.

Tracer rounds ripped across the sky.

The creature dodged with terrifying speed.

Then it opened its mouth.

A beam of red energy blasted forward.

The helicopter shook violently.

Warning alarms screamed.

"We're hit!" the pilot yelled.

Smoke filled the cabin.

Ethan grabbed the seat tightly.

"We're going down!"

The commander shouted into the radio.

"Mayday! Mayday!"

Another blast struck the tail rotor.

The helicopter spun wildly.

Below them, the desert rushed closer.

Ethan closed his eyes.

This was it.

But suddenly—

The flying creature stopped attacking.

It hovered in the air, staring at the helicopter.

No.

Not the helicopter.

Ethan.

The creature's glowing eyes locked onto him.

Then something strange happened.

Inside Ethan's mind, a whisper appeared.

Not from the creature.

From somewhere deeper.

Something ancient.

Something sleeping.

A single phrase echoed in his thoughts.

"The Gatekeeper has awakened."

Ethan's eyes snapped open.

"What…?"

The helicopter slammed into the sand.

Everything went black.

When Ethan woke up, the desert was silent again.

Smoke drifted from the wreckage.

Pain pulsed through his body.

He pushed himself up slowly.

The helicopter lay shattered nearby.

Soldiers crawled out of the wreckage.

Some were injured.

Some were not moving.

Ethan looked toward the horizon.

The massive door still stood there.

And the creatures were spreading across the desert.

The commander limped toward him.

"You still alive, doctor?"

Ethan nodded weakly.

"Barely."

The woman from before walked up beside them.

Blood ran down her arm, but she ignored it.

"We need to move."

Ethan frowned.

"Move where?"

She pointed toward distant mountains barely visible through the desert haze.

"There's an underground research base there."

The commander nodded.

"If the world is ending, that's where the answers are."

Suddenly—

The ground trembled again.

A shadow passed overhead.

Everyone looked up.

The flying creature had returned.

But this time it wasn't attacking.

It was watching.

Waiting.

Studying Ethan.

Then it slowly turned back toward the door.

As if reporting something.

Ethan felt dread tighten in his chest.

"They know something about me…"

The woman looked at him sharply.

"What?"

Ethan whispered the words he heard in his mind.

"The Gatekeeper…"

The commander frowned.

"And what exactly is that supposed to mean?"

Ethan stared toward the glowing door in the distance.

A terrible realization crept into his mind.

"I think…"

"…I'm the one who can open it."

And if the door fully opened…

Earth would not survive.
